I just wanted to say hi to everyone, and there doesn't seem to be a "Welcome" forum on the boards, so I figured this "catch-all" forum would do.

I've just ordered FPS Creator and am waiting (very impatiently) for the order to clear so I can get up and running. I'm an old school designer with a lot of experience in the independent FPS scene, but I've been away for a while. I've designed levels for Wolf 3D (yeah, I'm 42! Told you I've been away for a while), Doom, Duke 3D (including some mods), and Quake. I've played around a bit with Unreal as well, and actually bought Pie In The Sky's horrid 3D Game Creator (which was already ten steps behind when it first came out). Then my kids were born and my band started taking up more of my time, and the FPS's got put on the back burner.

Now the kids are grown and have moved on, the band is no more, and I find myself with plenty of free time and missing the scene. I'm so glad to have found FPS Creator and all of you! I'm looking forward to seeing everything that you guys are doing, and possibly even collaborating on some things. I already have a project in mind for my first attempt, but I'll have to wait and see what kind of textures are available in the packs that come with the game before I'll know if it will work.

Cheers!

Hey, welcome! Enjoy here, I know I do!

As Lewis said, FPS Creator is a very nice program if you spend time with it, play with it, don't ignore it's feelings, take it to a walk when needed, wash it, cut it's hair and take care of it's hygiene, train it and more infotmation can be found in the "FPSC for dummies"-manual!

Welcome to the forum NurseMaduro.

You may be old compared to most here, but certainly not the oldest. I've had experience with all those things you mentioned - playing them, not designing them.

I hope you enjoy FPSC and the forums as much as I do.

Brian.

NurseMaduro,

*handshake*

My first game system was a Sears console that played 6 versions of Pong. First computer was a RadioShack MC-10. So, I'll battle you for the "oldster" title here!

Welcome to the forum NurseMaduro

I can't wait to see what kind of games come up created by you on the forums.

a quick tip look at this thread, if you didn't already that is.
It has many different things that could help out while learning FPSc.

Wow! Talk about a friendly group of people.

@ Metal Devil123, EGG HEAD OF DOOM, and Pain: Yeah, I've been bouncing around the forums for hours checking out as much info as I can. The cool thing I've always found about level design is finding a way to make whatever is in my head work within the confines of the engine. I've done some pretty bizarre things with some of my past games (for example, making corpses "disappear" in Wolf3D) so I can't wait to really get into the nuts and bolts of this one.

@ xplosys, CapnBuzz, and chidem: I'm right up there with you guys! My first computer was a TI-99/4a that plugged into the tv and used a tape player to load and save data. It was pretty powerful though; that thing made uber games for its time.I wish I still had it (and all the games I made back then).

@ Bloody James: Maybe I'm too old, but I'm not getting the "Maduro...bazzinga" reference (if it is a reference)? lol

@ Lewis, Nomad Soul (great name!), Leaning Objects To The Side (another great name!), and KeithC: Thanks for the warm welcome! It's great to be at a forum where people take that kind of time.

@ wizard of id: Ah yes, Pie In The Sky. I bashed it, but it actually was kinda fun, even if it was very limited (for those of you who don't know, it was kinda like FPSC, made in the mid-90s, cost around $80 (which is more expensive than FSPC, but even worse 15 years ago...it was a lot of money), and severely limited. You couldn't save games, no checkpoints, had only one life (if you died, that was it, crashed frequently, poor graphics engine...but, in spite of all that, it could still be fun. I remember taking pictures of trees and importing some pretty nice looking sprites (their trees sucked- lol). Did you ever make anything? I had a game up on a local bbs, but I don't have it any more (not that it would even run now).

@ Juzi: Yikes! Don't put me up on that pedestal yet, my friend. I've never even touched the engine! Remember, most of the ones I've worked with were all 2d and sprite driven (plus, it's been a looong time). This is going to be new for me, but I'll try to give you something worth playing.

Thanks again to everyone! I've seen a lot of your posts (and work) whilst banging around the forums, and you've set a pretty high standard. Cheers!

I've got a brand new TI-99/4a in the box. I wonder if it's worth anything? My first was an Atari 400 w/membrane keyboard. It used an Atari Basic Language Cartridge, very similar to QBasic. You could write about 12 pages of code before it ran out of memory. Those were the days.

@NurseMaduro
Nope gave up (GFX was dissapointing) did a few modding projects with Duke when the scene died down a bit I discovered 3D gamestudio which was pretty good the amount of work being required for a Simple FPS game was just too much at the time and then discovered FPSC which was right up my ally...

@ xplosys: Wow...those horrid membrane "keyboards"!!! I wasn't sorry to see those things go away. The bubbles would wear out so fast.

@ Metal Devil123: Well, I didn't want to leave anyone out, as you were all so nice to welcome me.

ZX Spectrum 48K was my initiation into computing and programing but I really got into with an Amstrad (the model number evades me) which I was given on a trip to a carboot sale - that was a great piece of kit! I even very briefly flirted with development on the Atari Jaguar a few years ago but only as a level designer

Welcome! Congrats for working with DOOM, probably the best FPS (darn Half Life show-offs) for it's time.

I would just advise you download a mod (preferably Fenix Mod) to start, because it will make the games a lot better.

Welcome NurseMaduro,

My first computer was an Atari, 1mb ram. Cost me an arm and a leg. No hard disk just a floppy drive using a 512k disk to run programs off of and share the same 512k flopy to save work back too.

Pie had support?!?

Thanks again for the warm welcome, everyone! I'm off and running now, and getting a feel for the software. Some features are pretty ingenious, while others are...less so. I've gotten all the updates but, after perusing the boards, I'm wondering now if I should revert to an older version and install a mod? For the moment though, I'll keep playing and learning everything that I can.

Fenix Mod works with the newest version of FPSC and it has LOTS of features.

Fenix mod is not unique in the forums, and others mods have a LOTS of features too. Any mod concentrate the power on different ways. Xara mod on the graphics, fenix mod in the gameplay, third person, project blue too, and the others.

Thanks, guys! I think I'm just going to wait a while and focus on how the base engine does things first before adding any mods, though. That way if something goes wrong, I know where the problem lies.

(Here's a hint: it'll most likely be with ME. )
