try exporting to a .3ds or .obj. Those formats are more common than a .ma?

whats subsurfed? and the mess in the middle is meant to be likened to a piece of car shrapnel penetrating the sign

Subsurf is dividing the mesh by *4 so it splits 1 poly into 4 and smooths the result. Used by alot on new people to create the effect you have done. I recommend that you do not ever touch that function till you know exactly what your doing ^_^

I still rarely use it, i prefer to tesselete then connect or use cut tools to add nesseary poly's.

I might make a low poly if i have time later. Youll be able to see how to create the effect you were looking for then.

hi mate just downloaded your model to uv & texture it for you.but when i loaded it up & saw the poly count i fell off my chair 13.950 polys for a road sign is far to high, you could make a high quality one with a few 100.

you need to try again with this model before its worth textureing

cheers henry

@lazerus

partially makes sense haha

and yeah if you could make a low poly one, im just confused, how do you smooth something out without instantly adding like 100 new polys?! lol

and @henry ham

same thing i just kept smoothing it and it kept adding polys, im confused on maya tbh i dont know much about it lol

thanks guys!

don't lose heart
new modellers all go through this stage
Use deled editor which is free and uses bitmap textures
creating a basic sign uses 38 polygons - screen cap attached.
13,950 could make you an entire city
deled exports x plus bitmap also dbo plus collision
I use it to make buildings for fpscx9
see 'work in progress' - fall out city

13,950 Polys is way to much, It should be about 28 for the top of the sign and 20 for the stand. The way i would go about it is create a cube the right size for the sign, Bevel it and move the edges to make the corners look rounded, Make 2 8 sided cylinders and position them at the right place and That's it You could make the stand cubes and For all the dents i would suggest a normal map, Good luck! (It would be worth using this method seeing as it will only take 2-6 mins)

lol ok mate the lesson begins now

1 make a box in your modeler ,scale it to the size you need

2 pick the 4 corner edges & chamfer them

3 cut in new edges to keep your model all quads

4 make a box for the leg scale it to size

next i uvw map what ive made (i use max but the basics are the same )

box map the sign .i then stacked the sides on to of each other then did the same for the top & bottom

next box map the leg stack the top & bottom & move it above the sides then scale them to size

now back to the model

pick you leg now make a copy & move it into place (this means you only have to uv map one leg as the new one will have the same cords as the first )

now pick your sign & attach your legs

render your uv map & save it

fire up your 2d programe open the uv map & paint your texture onto it save it as jpeg

in your 3d program assign the texture to your model & render the finished asset.

class dismissed

cheers henry

a barrier for a train station, dependent on where you live if you recognise them or not and it obviously doesnt look right because its all one colour and the middle bit is the thing that actually allows access

*Yawns*

Its quite a pain to find texture references for a railway barrier, it seems that not many avid photographers see thier importance.

After a little hack ups and reangling' parts from the few ref's i found - ( worst possible angles in the world )

I finished it anyway Its in the DL.

Sorry for the texture flow, im sleepy lol.

I got around the sides and front then slapped a cut off ontop =_= lol

Ohh an What was with the 3k polycount?? i crapped myself when i saw that, it might be benfical for you to lookup some tutorials aand learn to unwrap yourself.

I dont think anyone else will be happy if you ask again without showing improvemnt

No EULA so enjoy
