Coming soon: environments for TGC Store.
These environments consist of a terrain sliced into segments, there are 400 segments which make up centre of terrain covering a 20x20 map area for perfect collision with player and enemy characters plus a rim boundary to extend the terrain to 25x25 map area.
The environments use a matching skybox, the terrain textures have shadows lightly baked to match the sun position of the skybox so the entire scene is seamless whatever your position (its hard to tell where the terrain ends and the skybox begins).
You can place normal segments within the 20x 20 area and the terrain segments will be removed by these, which means you have no terrain poking up through the floors of your buildings and you can remove terrain segments to create caves, undergound areas and basement levels.
This terrain also makes great floors for caves and such giving you perfect enemy collision in all these areas.

Seamless view even at edge of terrain.

Place buildings and remove terrain segments.

Perfect character collision.

Perfect for cave floors.

Wow! Very inventive. I'll bet these sell like crazy.

Man that must have been a ton of work slicing those up!

EDIT: How do you make your skyboxes? Skyboxes are an area I don't know much about.

This looks great! you got my money! I've made a few skyboxes myself but I'm curious what program are you using to generate your skybox's, Bryce, Vue, etc.

Basic skyxboxes are created into either Bryce or Max, Bryce skyybox's are imported into Max so terrain can be textured and lit for texture baking. I use Dreamscape plug in to create Max skyboxes (actually a lot easier and more realistic than Bryce) some skyboxes are basic Bryce retouched in Photoshop.
Slicing a terrain is tedious and soul destroying lol, without macro recording it wouldn't be worth the hassle. When you slice one of these up it creates a ton of additional verts which have to be welded or FPSC throws a fit when you try to use lights with normals in all directions and a segment mesh with more faces than neccessary each and evry one of 'em had to be welded.
The beauty of these terrains though is that they use a single texture which can be replaced by your own if you want to do that, evry mesh had to had its pivot repositioned and the mesh itself centered to zero before export for it all to work, so yeah it was a ton of effort, at first they might appear simple but believe me it took a lot of planning

Believe me, I can imagine! Sometimes the modeling is the easy (and fun) part. Getting it ready for FPSC is NOT fun.

Heres another from a different point.

AbdulAhad: no frame drop the poly count for entire terrain is less than 2200 poly's.
Tanya: as always your the greatest Will be finishing these up in a couple of days, then its up to TGC how long before they appear in store. If folks really like these I may create some more.

I have to agree, the transition from terrain to skybox is so hard to spot that I doubt I can really see it. Great work. Hopefully TGC will make this a priority and get it up soon.

More people should do what Rolfy did with Eldora and make their levels out of 3d models with pre-baked shadows. I'm bored of your bog standard box segment levels, and Eldora's environments in a modern FPSC mod with high framerates could make a commercial quality game.

You should think about making a few more of these and making an official model pack. That way you would get more exposure, rather than getting buried in the store after a few days.

Actually bond1 thats probably a good idea, will shoot off an e-mail and see what they say.
Of course they are not completely seamless with the skybox that would be impossible without an infinite terrain generation. But given the limitations of FPSC these really do look pretty good and to the player would not look as false as the sudden end you get with using flat floor segments and a skybox which wasnt created to suit the scene. The edges of the terrains are sculpted to suit and the same textures used on terrains within the skybox are used to tie it all together not to mention the lighting for shadows which are baked into the texture, you can still use lighting within FPSC to light entity's and they just add to the shadows already in there.

I just thought of a potential problem. You said the textures are baked according to the skybox to give it a realistic look. How will this work when someone compiles a level with lightmapping? I'm still a noob, so don't hate me if this isn't an issue.

Just posted right before you Josh, its not a problem as with anything that has a light scource you just place your lights to suit, the new shadows blend pretty well with whats already there.
If you do place lights say idoors or underground you should place some larger lights in scene to light the terrain particularly if your ambience is set low.

For those who want to see where the terrain edge is heres an example.

As you can see your are pretty close to the edge of the terrain in this view.
