Search for 3DS MAX tutorials in google, After 4 or 5 of them it is fairly easy, After 10-15 of your own models it's more like a second nature

EDIT: Azunaki beat me to it

...,,,... ehmm... well, basicly every human modelling tutorial uses boxes or cylinders.. ehhm, when u make a gun u either start with a box or draw an outline...

Practise

No seriously.

If youve only just started then play with all the functions in the standard Mesh.

Firstly your most likly still leaving objects as plain objects. You need to convert them into Mesh or poly setups.

Play with the functions till you know the ins and outs or at least grasp their concepts.

You cant expect to become a AAA modeler overnight so keep at it.

Becoming an expert in 3D modelling is like mastering DarkBASIC pro. You start doing very simple things. I've been using Lightwave since v3.5 on the Amiga , and now have v8.5 for Windows about 10 years later, and I'm still learning, and its pretty much the same everytime I develope my game in DarkBASIC.

@lazerus

3DS Max has changed since I lasted used it about 10 years ago. I think the only thing I recognise are the keyframe controls at the bottom

I'm trying to think what version of 3DS I used, I seem to think 4 or 5. I never got used to it as I'm hooked to LW

I wish I had the money to upgrade my version of Lightwave to the latest version as its had an almost complete rewrite recently. Bloody money!

I was born with this talent, in fact, I wasn't born, I was genetically mutated in a lab specifically for 3d.

But yeah, perseverance is key, everyone starts at the bottom rung sometimes.

The common misconception with the ribbon is that it replaces the tools that you're currently using, it doesn't, It is completely optional but it has some really nice features concerning edgeloops. Including the new special ring and loop selection features. Swiftloop is one of my favourite new features, it creates an edge loop but still conforms to the flow of the model, it's pretty damn cool.
Surely you can get a student licence though lazerus? I was on Max 8 for ages until I decided to upgrade. Haven't looked back, I have gotten used to the ribbon being there, the new graphite tools are amazing and it is easy to use and hide whenever I choose to. The worst addition to max has been the viewcube and the steering wheel. I never liked the viewcube in maya so i'm never going to like it in max. The steering wheel is a major pain in the arse and has been off since I upgraded and hasn't returned since.

Regardless, get 2011, which i'm hoping to get as soon as I have the cash (probably not until 2012 comes out).
I'm excited about using Slate, the new node based material editor. CAT is now completely integrated (possibly the best rigging plugin ever created) and the freshly stolen object painting from maya. Not to mention a few other things.

I cant get a student license yet since im in 6th form and my orignal license was 'loaned' from the schools It budget as its a unlimited one. Though once im on my Uni course i can get a student license for the newer versions. Ive seen the new poly ring tools on a tech demo, should be so helpful.

There yearly arnt they? If so i can upgrade as there realesed lol.

Press V when in the viewport, why would I want to watch my camera float around in the viewport when the shortcut gets it done quicker.
