Just thought I would post a few things I have been working on lately. First up are some walls and a few floor tiles I have made for baking to a lower poly mesh:

The above scene has 183,977 tris. I still have some UV issues going on with the low res models, but below is some testing with the normals baked on.

Above scene has 362 tris.

Next is a futuristic/sci fi pistol I have been working on. Right now, it is a mixture of low and high poly (just making it high poly... ). I started off thinking I would make a decent low-mid poly gun for some FPS action and later decided that I would start working on making it ready to bake onto a low poly model. Since then, I have learned quite a bit more about rendering normal maps, and may go back and change quite a few things on this. It has 13,181 tris.

And a wire:

Finally, this is a model I had been working on for quite a while. There are still things I would like to change, but I think I am going to say it's done. I am contemplating painting a bump map and converting it to a normal map with PS to give it a bit more organic feel to certain parts. I don't know, though. I think it is pretty game ready with 5904 tris.

And a wire:

Now all I need to do is texture everything. I have the pistol and the demon unwrapped, but have yet to start painting a texture on them. Thanks for scoping out my stuff! Any comments and critiques are more than welcome!

I like the clean maps on the baking project. And that monster looks pretty cool.

That monster...is it like a evil 'uni'?

Otherwise, models look good. The sci-fi gun looks very sci-fish.

Keep it up.

All the models are based loosely on concept art found throughout the interwebs. The walls are actually based off some plastic mold kits for making sci-fi role-playing maps.

The rear end of the gun(the handle, bullet ejection slot(not up on gun terms) , etc) is pretty close to the concept, but the front end was pretty much made on the fly. I am going to have to work on the 8 small cylinders that are extruding out the sides. They are giving me problems with the projection cage for normal baking. I wanted to make it sci-fi, but still keep a sense of modern style and design.

The basic idea of the monster is based off of some concept art, but I changed quite a few things. It has less legs but they are bulkier to support the weight, I gave it a more evil looking head, and is now sporting an exoskeleton, which I think is rather stylish. I don't know whether it is an evil uni or not... but I doubt it would taste the same!

Thanks for the comments!!

Woh! I think the term 'uni' means two different things to us. I'd post what it refers to when I say it, but I don't want to get banned...

Other than that it looks well made lol.

Was that the one that looked like it was wearing the woman as trousers?

Yah, I was just making a sushi reference. I've always thought that Human/Creature juxtapositions have the possibility to make some of the creepiest creepy-crawlers around. That's one of the reasons I love John Carpenter's The Thing and a lot of Giger's art.

It very well could have been the same thing that I based this model from, lazerus. I call it concept art, because to me it is. I can't really draw that well, so I tend to use other's art as inspiration.

Hopefully, this isn't frowned upon.

*Cough*
Check the Dl image
*cough*

There is nothing wrong with using concept art and you can be the best artist in the world but you'll still find references in other peoples work.

Though it is wise to alter the design, add something to make it unique.

As for hybrids, i understand where your coming from. Other than gigers sexually frustrated works or his past, he was a good artist. A sick and twisted one but a good artist never the less.

Germaine richer and giacommetti are both good sources for insperation. They were actually my main source artists for my last art unit.

Anyway it looks good, keep it up.

Looks a bit like my folder... only more organized.

I looked up both names you mentioned and both have got some pretty crazy stuff going on. I especially like Giacometti's dog. Thanks for the referral! I've been looking at Keith Thompson's art lately. He's got some neat descriptions of his art.

Thanks, PW! I never really thought about it, but after a search, I can see the similarities!

The actual reference pic is:

If I knew who drew it, I would give them props, but I can't find the site I got it from.

I have also started to work very slowly on painting a normal/bump map for the monster. I'm not super happy with it, but here it so far.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks, Shadowtroid! I think I may get rid of the girl on the back and change the legs up. The girl takes about 3000 polys, while the beast itself only takes up about 1000. This will give me more room to work with on the legs since they are a fairly large focal point. I spent too much time on the girls face and toes thinking that they should be fairly detailed. I guess I'm not as done with the model as I thought I was!

Bumpity bump! I'm still working on the previous things, but here are a couple new images from things I have been working on as well.

An RPG-26 that is in the mix with just some base materials:

And a stone temple that I am working on for the compo this time around! It's based off of the Trimurti cave temple in Mamallapuram, India:

Thanks for looking! Crits and comments welcome!

Wow, I like the temple.

The LAW/RPG/Whatever Rocket Shooter Thingy needs more texture detail, but I'm sure you knew that.

Thanks, folks! Here's a little something else I have been working on for a while now. Some type of APC:

The texture is amazing, but for the metal part it looks somewhat painted with dodges and burns rather than natural metal. Try making a flat metal texture and overlaying it on that part of the model... just to see what it'd look like...

Yeah the colours are looking very smudgy right now. Flat colours with an AO map should do, no more manual shading needed.

Gigantor bump!

Thanks. The texture on the APC was a very work in progress model. I have changed up my texturing habits a bit since then, and now work in layers over the total model instead of texturing each piece one at a time. I was having a huge problem with keeping everything uniform and I think that switching my texture flow around a bit is going to help in the future.

Anyway, here is another model I am working on as of late. Some type of succubus/satyr or something. I was going to use it as a compo entry, but I don't think I will have enough time to UV map/texture /rig/animate it with all the stuff I've got going on right now. We'll see! (Getting ready to move! Yay!)

Anyway:

and a wireframe:

I used the poly flow pic that I posted in another thread to make the head. I am pretty proud of it. Don't know if you can see it or not, but the head reference used was that of Kristin Davis. I wanted a face with sharp features, and I thought she fit the criteria. I have another model made with horns, long elfish ears, and I am starting to work on the hair, but it is at home. o_O

Thanks for looking, let me know what you think.

It's a good start, but I'm not so sure the Kristin Davis reference came through at all. The chin and cheeks are much too masculine. Also, the tail looks a bit "stuck on". I think widening the base will help.

yeah the first thing i thought when i saw the face was: is that a man with... breasts..???

the body is just fine, the face needs a total remake imho though

Thanks for the comments, guys! The head is pretty masculine... But... I did a little more work on it. I am trying to get more of a Cruella Deville type face going on. I know Kristin Davis is far from the evil tyrant look, but I did like her sharp features. Anyway here is an update on the head:

I'm still not sure about clothes, since I'm imagining that she is going to be nimble and should not have clothes that would tamper with her agility, but I do want something covering the base of the tail and butt. It does kind of look like it was tacked on, but here it is at a different angle. I didn't pay attention to how straight it looked in the last pic:

Thanks for looking!

Small update:

Starting to outline the base of the clothes and hair. Colors are just basic to make it easy to see separate pieces. After I'm done with the clothing and hair, I will probably delete all the hidden geometry behind it, attach, weld all verts, then take it into Zbrush and see what I can do.

EDIT: Oh yeah, right now, without deleting any polys, she is around 5400 tris. I'm trying to keep her as low as possible while still getting some decent curves... o_O

EDIT2: I switched up the pic with what I think is a better render. I also tweaked the face a bit.

Here is a little update on my model. Changed up her color scheme a bit, added a bit of hair, a few earrings, a crown, added some clothes (and tweaked the existing) and am now working on the staff model she will wield:

Your new humanoids are looking real good. But why did you work in triangles with your first models until the tank?

You should put those clothes to brownish leather. That fits perfectly fantasy character.

Thanks for the comments!

@PW Productions: I used to only really enjoy modeling ships, machines, vehicles and such. I always used tris for them because I was able to plan out a lower poly count while using the middle seam of the 'quad' to affect smoothing groups. I still prefer to use tris, but Zbrush doesn't like them. :/ I also switched up my modeling techniques for this and have started using Edit Poly. There are some much better tools than what Edit Mesh has to offer (target weld, bridge, cut, etc.) So, I concede. Quads are where it is at.

@Vortex Games: I am actually thinking about having different outfits/weapons/hair/etc for her. For this rendition, I am going for a necromancer/sorceress type baddie. I still plan on adding more detail for the clothes on the arms and legs. I have left the clothing and the body as two seperate objects so it should be easy to make different outfits.

@lazerus: Thanks! I plan on doing some more to the weapon to make it look a bit more 'evil'.

Besides a few small changes I want to make, I will soon start unwrapping her. For each rendition, I think I will finalize the model by merging the clothing and the body. It will lower the poly count tremendously. Right now, she is running about 8500 tris(with the weapon) but when I ran a test and deleted unseen polys behind the clothes, I get about 5500.

Thanks for looking!

-Mike
