Hey everyone. I wanted to participate in this months comp, and since I just bought a series of tuts on character modeling, I thought I would give it a test run. Of course, the character being modeled in these videos is a mechanic lol so I think I'm gonna give him some red cracked skin and some horns to help him out a little bit This guy I'm hoping is gonna be full next gen. If there's not enough time I'll just stick with a high poly.

I have a pic here and right now its at the base/blocking stage so it's hardly critable, but I figured I should just post at major saves. And just a not I'm not done with the arms, still gotta round them out so don't pay them any mind

Awesome start to my thread already double posting. O well. Here are some shots of the mesh before I go in and make the feet and hands. You might be able to crit this stage. Not sure thought still early. Stands at around 300 quads right now but the count doesn't really matter since this is gonna be a high poly base.

he's just about neck-less, even for a big guy the head kind of just seems stuck on. You might try transitioning the head into the shoulders and body a bit more.

Pelvis area could use some more polys, He also needs some muscle definition (But i'm sure you'll sculpt that in later). I agree with Ortu, He needs a neck

You're doing well though! Are you going for the fat guy like on the "Ugly Guy" thread on polycount (Here: http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=71430&highlight=fat+guy&page=3 )?

Nope I'm not going for that at all lol this is supposed to be a fat (as you can see) mechanic. This is still very early. This is just blocking right now. Later I will be doing some subdiv modeling to get in a little detail before I sculpt. And I do see what you mean about the neck, I was just planning that he would read as a fat guy and that his fat made his neck larger, kindof like in my concept if you check it out. I've attached it, I'm also going away from the concept and giving him horns, roots and read skin to make him more boss-like

EDIT: Not my concept Concept is by Drew Wolf

Is it actually your concept art?

dammit well, as already been said he does need a neck, the concept art shows that he has one, but if your going for a stylised look then go ahead and ignore this ^_^"

edit nvr mind, found the tutorial

If you look at this screen, presumabley a later version, you can see the neck defination.

Ok, new update, Added hands and feet. The hands look a little iffy but they actually look good when smoothed which is my priority right now. I have the whole body blocked now I just need to block in accesories (horns, belt, bandana, packs) Solid and wire shots as usual

Nother update, Completely done with blocking. Although I do have to make some proportional changes. (he's not tall enough, then once I make him taller, he has to be fatter) I kept my word about the horns too

Looking good, Camo!!! He reminds me of the Butcher from Diablo! Oh how I hated him... Had to use the Rogue to defeat him from behind bars!

My green thumb grew the tree my Trojan War horse was crafted from. With roses in our pockets we rally round the tombstones. Ashes to ashes, we all fall down.

Not a big update here. Just made him more realistic with some proportional changes and edited some things. (Like I took away the hair)

Well, couldn't you just right click on the picture and keep clicking open image until it's nothing but the image itself, and then use that URL, like the image address one? Or did they just recently change Image Shack . But, regardless, the model does look pretty good, but (it seems) that he has pants and a loincloth on, which doesn't make much sense... Unless that's an apron I'm not good at inferring untextured models, keep up the work.

I always just copy the direct link address when it brings up the list of links after the upload. works just fine. It's the second one down in the list I think.

I believe that avoiding tris is pretty much always a good polygon modelling technique and your character has very nice flow because of it. I always avoid them and I don't have access to ZBrush.

It's looking good , keep it up.

I'm slightly worried at how similar your meshes are to this:

No hes been following that tutorial, i posted up a bit back saying i found it,

Quote: "edit nvr mind, found the tutorial"

Just a quick reverse image search did that for me, i dont see the harm if he heavily modifiers it. Right now if its used as a base then you pretty much have a open canvas.

I agree, there is no harm in following a tutorial.
Though it would be nice and probably better, to give their own ideas to the model itself.
When someone follows a tutorial.

Anyway, looked like a nice model. Do you by any chance have a screen of the new alien boss?

Alright new character, this time a fighter. Just a basic sculpt to get main muscles down, probably gonna redo it. Not liking it that much. And does it matter if I used someone elses basemesh? The artist released it for free on polycount

Credit must be used where materials other than your own are used. No matter the use. Well respect you more for tellingus, rather then us finding out, which we always do. I recongised mesh stright away, so yeah credit is needed in this case ^__^
