Hello All!
I'm relatively new here *I've been lurking for a while* I was just wondering if I could get some experienced coders to help me get a grasp on a few things! I don't have horribly high expectations for my first projects but I would love some suggestions on what to make... I've gotten 3 DBPro books and have gone through MOST of them doing the exercises as needed to help me try to figure this whole thing out. I guess the problem lies in me getting WAY too ahead of my self and not focusing on the basics enough. So my first request to any and all coders/programmers on this forum is: What would be the best types of programs to make to really help me grasp the basics of 2D programming(everyone has to start here I suppose right?). Maybe this type of challenge will get others rolling as well as myself to start learning not through books but by DOING!

Cheers to anyone who can offer help ahead of time!

With DBPro you don't have to start with 2D programming. You can go right to 3D, it's not much harder.

What's your favorite type of game? RPG? RTS? Strategy? Puzzle? Try to make a watered down version of something you really like. If you don't like the game genre, it is sometimes hard to get excited about your project.

Other bit of advice is for the first simple game, make it complete. Give it several screens (title, options, high score, etc.) as you will learn a lot just by doing that.

It's true that he can skip 2D and go right to 3D but sooner or later he is gonna need it and it's gonna be hard for him.2D is good!Learning how to operate properly with images and sprites, about diference in using various formats as .png , .jpg , .bmp , which is good for what and so on.

Start with 3D if you want, i personally start that way. It's harder to learn in reverse but you can catch up eventualy.

Hi,

Want something simple to start you out? Would you like help with graphics? Then I suggest you check out this thread..

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=172821&b=1

I have posted some sprites to start you out and I'll be helping with title screens and other stuff too. And I'm sure you can feel free to ask questions in that thread, the whole idea was to make a simple challenge that anyone even beginners could enter.

Cheers! and I hope to see you post an entry soon.

Thank you for the helpful hints! I think I want to get the grasp with 2D as I have experience in spriting, I think I will try this Dice game maybe? Time to start coding! I'm still open for suggestions and tips to make this steep hill a little easier to climb! Moon boots anyone?
Peace~

Try making a game like a bouncing ball game. You have a ball that will bounce off the top of the screen and the sides. You control a paddle (or another ball) at the bottom of your screen with the mouse's X value. The ball can bounce off the player's paddle/ball. Each bounce increases the score..... My daughter's first program was like that (lots of help from dad though).

The fastest code is the code never written.

I've coded a pong game through example so I guess it would be beneficial for me to try without reference then... I'm currently working with random generators and ALOT more Arrays, I'm trying to add graphics... I'm having a hard time grasping the load function and moving sprites... Thank you for replying hawkblood! I've scaled back. heh! I'm trying to come up with something for the dice competition; The coding I have is working nicely! I'm just FAILING with a "Ph" even on the grfx portion. More practice I guess. I'll try to code a new pong type game without using my books as a crutch, there are so many commands to memorize and I don't think I'm quite thinking like a programmer yet lol! It's ALL in the Flow charts dagnammit, Thats been the best thing for me through this whole thing as for nailing out commands...
~Cheers!
