Hi everyone,

It would be good to get your thoughts on the future of our game making competitions. Here are some questions for you all to answer:

How long would you like competitions to last?
What kind of competitions would you like to see us run?
Do you feel the prizes we have been offering are suitable?

Would be great to get your opinions!

I think the length would depend on the challenge itself, but I think the 1 month you've been doing is fine. The prizes are suitable, though personally I'd always prefer cash

I was just thinking, if these competitions continue on a regular basis, maybe offer a special forum badge to the winner. When the next competition winner is selected, the badge is switched over to the other person.

I like the competitions that allow me to work in 2D, it's more fun to me than 3D.

These things are awesome! Keep 'em coming!

How long would you like competitions to last?
Month is good. If I can make an entry in ten days a month is enough for anything.

What kind of competitions would you like to see us run?
Ones that involve making games. That is all the criteria that I have. I do find quiz games a bit dull, though, and thus I opted out of the last contest

Do you feel the prizes we have been offering are suitable?
I do this for Glory, not money. But money helps, too. Perhaps a way for players to show off their Glory?

My main suggestion, use the word "Huzzah" more often in the competition descriptions.

Huzzah!

Same as what everyone else has been saying. Something I would suggest though, is have the contests less frequently, say quarterly. I think that the last contest did not get enough attention because it was right after another contest, and was also during the holidays. If they were spaced out a bit more and more publicised, I think more people would enter.

Oh, and advertise the competition more than just on this board. I think few ppl actually look here. A quick announcement off-topic should get everyone's attention.

I've always liked application/gui design coding.

What about a board game remake?

I agree with thenerd in having competitions quarterly and I also agree with Phaelax in that money prizes are generally preferred and will always attract the most attention.
I believe however that gamestore points could also be offered but only if these could be used against game making tools, including current offers, such as Dark AI, Dark Game Studio Bonanza, AC3D or even AppGameKit, etc.
Time wise I think 1 month is too short. Although advanced users can create a reasonable effort in this time, it effectively illiminates others who just need that little bit of extra time either to better their skills or because of other commitments.

As for themes, well you need to vary these to attract programmers generally, including board game remakes, shootems, dice/card games, useful applications, quizes, totally new unique games and retro games including new variations.

Lastly, advertisements needs improving. My delay in posting is because i've just seen this thread.

The Community Competitions are a great resource for TGC community.

1)They encourage finishing a development and doing so within a deadline. Many of us have a habit of starting and not completing many projects.
2)They push us to learn new programming skills, which otherwise may never have got round to using.
3)They promote co-operation and force us to strive for excellence in the spirit of friendly competition.
4)The resulting source codes are an invaluable resource to those who wish to know how something was done.

Please continue with them.

My Ideal setup would be

4 times a year, this would give 2 months development, 1 month for judging and promoting the start of the next competition. Regular competitions would mean people would know when to expect them.
Advertising prior to the start of the competition in the forums (as a hot Topic), on face-book and in the newsletter (You already have a nice banner from a previous competition).

The kind of competitions I would like to see are

Varied competitions, with a wide scope for creativity.
e.g. FPS, Shoot em’ up, Sports game, Beat em’ up, Driving Game, a Maze game, Multi player game, strategy game, Board game, Non Game, Puzzle game, Arcade game, Casino game, Educational game or even give us a game element (Like in the Alienware Compo) which could be a model, picture or music and ask us to make a game.

The Competitions should include all members of this community. Some for FPSC others for DB and don’t forget the APP Game Kit. Some for modelling and some for music would be cool too.

Though I feel the next competition should be to make a FPS game with a theme, in any of TGC products this should encourage everyone to become involved.

are the prizes suitable ?

The prizes are fantastic. With the vouchers I got from the last competition, I Chose Dark Source, Styx and Smart Packer Pro, very generous thanks.

Feedback

I wish you could give a paragraph of feedback on our entries. I have been entering dark basic competitions since 2002, my first being on the old Real Game Tools website. Feedback used to be standard and was part of the helpfulness of these competitions to beginners. I know it has the potential to cause disagreements, but if you stick to the format of saying something good, then something critical (which could be improved) then something good again, it should minimise problems.

I would also like a publicised scoring tool and an overall score, though, I know you may be reluctant to do this. E.g. Graphics 10 points, SFX 10 Points, Music 10 points, Playability 50 points, replay-ability 20 points. Total 100 points. This would let us know what we need to improve.

Anyway, please continue these competitions. If you are looking for assistance judging future competitions, I would be happy to help, otherwise you can count on my entry.

Don't make the 1th prize some stupid - I'm very sorry but i feel this way, so i have to say this way - holiday or any kind of trip, no matter how much it worth in money. It just doesn't force me to want to make the best i can, and therefore doesn't really force me to enter.

Seriously, i would cut a vein if i managed to make a so good game what would earn first prize, and it would be a $5000 holiday like it was with the netbook compo. Am i alone with this?... (aside from the fact i'm 23, really, is there anybody who is into programming, and wants a holiday as a prize? if i was 13 i still wouldn't want it. There was once a kids' edition of "Who wants to be a millionaire?" in Hungary around 2000, where all the lower prizes were the coolest ever: consoles, electronic games & stuff, and yup, the first prize was a freakin' Disneyland trip... tha hell would go for that? i'd rather make a stupid arse out of myself and choose the silliest answer out of the 4 possibility to stop when there is still a worthy prize!)

(i know i kow, what makes me think there is even a little danger for me of being number 1. in a competition... let's just think about this theoretically guys. Though i hope my soon to be unveiled project in the WIP section may indicate that...)

- To sum my babbling about up: hardware, and money prizes are highly preferred. BUT also for a first prize i could imagine something like a distribution contract for the game. (this could be optional, of course highly depends on the nature of the competition topic, and the size of the actual entry, but it COULD be an option IF...)

- Also the least hardware specific, the best! (There is nothing wrong with a simple PC (an other little moderately angered reference to the netbook compo), may TGC - just a little bit - turn back to the PC instead of exploring all the never heard of platforms which some day might be popular for the richest 10.000 ...)

- Dates: There are too big of time periods between competitions. Big ones should be by every half year, or one year at least. And smaller ones for more symbolic prizes (...like promotion for the author, free DBP license, like these...) per EVERY month. There would be something interesting for the newsletters. Don't want to offend, i really like that there is a monthly free really quality newsletter, though not once it happened, that i just rolled till the end in like 2 minutes not finding anything interesting, and there, it was 'THE newsletter' for that month.

Hope any of these words reach you at the company, and don't feel offended at all if may. There was no intention for it.

I think the competitions should be tiered, per se, in that maybe monthly you have small competitions. The participants of these competitions wouldn’t be required to provide a fully functioning game but maybe instead just an idea for a game, an algorithmic improvement (programmers), sound-byte, video-clip or other types of artistic works such as character-models or buildings etc. The point of these competitions would be to foster an individual’s learning within their particular field of interest.

Winners of these competitions would receive small prizes such as Bronze, Silver or Gold star icons next to their names in the forums and appending references to their winning submissions to their public profile. Other prizes might include recognition within the TGC newsletter or recognition on the TGC web-site (something akin to the Gallery).

The second tier competitions, perhaps quarterly, would comprise of combining the works of three, four, five or more previous first tier competition themes into a new concept or idea. For instance, maybe in January the competition was to develop a character model for some conceptual persona. In February, maybe it was for a sound-byte, set of weapon descriptions or a video interpretation of a space themed adventure. Finally, in March, the competition was to provide a story line depicting an individual within a space themed adventure that specifically utilizes a set of weapons and their characteristics.

Alas, it is now April and you launch new competition in which the participants must tie in the specific ideas compiled from the previous competitions held from January through March into a single one (or two) level demo game.

At this point, the winner may receive special recognition (such as above) plus some other prizes such as development tools or whatnot. The point of this competition, in my opinion, would be more for promoting and rewarding creative thinking. Not everyone, like me, has a creative imagination. However, if given a set of ideas to work with may offer up a new set of quasi-unique ideas from which to expand upon.

JTK

Pac-Man anniversary has not been celebrated here yet.

Why not use this video game symbol as a theme for creative adaptations ?

Just a thought.

3d modeling for fps creator would be cool, as there would be several extra fields (shaders, interactivity etc) that could earn brownie points. I like my 3dmaster badge but It'll dissappear soon, I think there should be a badge for ex compo winners (call me greedy, your probalby right) .

An airport themed 3d model competition?

Aside from me not having time right now, the only thing that has stopped me in the past was a lack of a cash reward instead of winning TGC vouchers. I know its not the same, but the fact is people enjoy cash. Id much rather get $20 from a family member for christmas than a giftcard for $20 to best buy.

Overall yes, but I'd prefer money And no more holiday vouchers please.

And I just had an idea for a competition:
Who can create the most exaggerated/crazy first person game?
I think this would be great because many people would participate (I guess most people here are able to build a decent FPS) and it would still leave enough freedom for creativity and unique stuff. Think of Chicken-Launcher Deathmatch, Booger Shootout, Boy Band Slaughter, Ego Pong, etc.
Just an idea...

When is the next competition by the way?

Now the plot thickens, the fps decreases, and the awesomeness goes through the roof.

Yeah, could be like that, with that Nirvana song in the background
Or like Bulletstorm or something. But the entries wouldn't have to be mega brutal. People could also create non-violent crazy first person games!

Hi James,

I would be grateful if you could take a wee look at this thread,

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=181552&b=2

I had created it to drum up some more responses (which worked). I had asked people to post here, however there are many good opinions which have been posted there and I would not like them to be missed. Sorry for dividing up this discussion.

Phaelax

the last big competition,(Intel netbooks)

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_read&i=40

had a prize for First Place winner to receive an all expenses
paid vacation not to exceed US $5,000. Which seems very generous to me. It was only because of this prize that my girlfriend let me spend a lot of time entering. I won nothing and she was very disappointed. However I still learned loads and might yet submit more to the intel apup store.

Are the compos just restricted to the languages TGC products work with or are such things like Flash allowed?

Seems like a silly question but i can't code too well in DBPro and thus havent entered, if i knew they were open to all then i'd unleash one i've made in Flash as i can code that quite well.

As for the questions, i feel a Month is long enough for a small project like this.

I would like to see something that isn't sticked to one theme! Make a competition were any theme is available and give it like 6 months time to make it. A big competition, this will attract WAY more people, and alot of more people are able to make a game. Giving signatures and signs to someone that has won an compeition would be very good also. Like: "Winner of 2011's competition!" orsomething like it anyway.

I wouldnt restrict to "childish" themes... like alot of compos have been before. It just makes not attractive to people that are more interested in alot of action packed fps shooters.

Anyway thats my opinion, i relly hope to see a compo like that.

I do totally understand that entrys may only be made with tgc products. After all its the TGC forum.

Cheers,

There are a few programmers now attempting Appups but numbers are still quite low. There appears to be a few "hurdles" that must be restricting these numbers, mainly: Optimising your DBpro project to run on a netbook and then getting it validated.
Forum members are clearly getting stuck with the first hurdle primarily because the majority of us do not have a netbook on which we can test our Appups. Reading several posts, members who have created programs as such are desperate to get them tested, with limited response.
The community threfore needs more netbooks out there and more members willing to test for others. The 1st part can be helped by dishing out a sack full of netbooks in the next competions, well at least as an option.

Well from what I would think most people don't want a netbook since laptops are better. (At least I would not, I would want a workstation computer. ) Only people who need a small computer need it. I would think having a variety of prizes would be nice. something like

1st. A netbook or $250 TGC voucher (or whatever the netbook price is)
2nd. A choice of $100 TGC voucher or 5 Model packs
3rd ect...

They could do money or products if they wanted too, or anything else that I can't think of for prizes.

I think if there are going to be big prizes like this, the competition should be bigger, and also longer than a month. It's about time we have another big competition like the alienware one...

Hey, just had a quick scan down this page and it seems I'm one of the very many that only reads through some of the forum threads and can quite easily miss this one.

When a compo starts then post a thread in some of the other popular threads so more people notice it. I only read through 4 threads most times)

And I agree with what they said up there somewhere off my monitor.

I only use c++, are these going to be restricted to FPSC or DBPro?

I would say have the contest allow dbpro or C++ with darkGDK. Just my opinion though. I don't think that FPSC should be allowed, because so much is done for you, and it's not your own code. FPS creator competitions should be separate...

Being a noob, I think it would be nice to theme a couple with a set number of items that have to be used. For instance, have a competition where you can only use 10 sprites total or have a downloadable zip that contains the only items you can use in a 3d program (not including ground/sky/walls). This would create a lot of interesting ideas based on resources that everyone has the same access to.

Just my $0.02 (or less depending on current market trading rates!)

@Bulsatar: I think that most of the people fancy to see something like a real Indie Game Development Competition, where basicaly all TGC products are allowed.

I think its more about freedom in creating other than restricting to single images... (which can be creative though, but less people will enter therefore)

Maybe we should have two divisions for the competitions, one for newcomers and the other for more experienced developers. This gives newcomers a chance make something and not have to worry about trying to match programs developed by experienced users. There will have to be criteria that defines a newcomer though, something like being a member of the forums for less than 2 years. Of course this won't represent every single newcomer to coding but should catch the majority of them. They could also compete up if they think they are ready.

I think that instead of using the join date to choose the class you compete in, users can just pick which competition they wanted.

Yeah, that was just an example, and a poor one at that, probably shouldn't have criteria and let people choose which one but I think that the newcomers class should be promoted strongly as such, just to give them a higher chance at winning. I remember when I first came to these forums how much I wanted to enter a competition and when I saw what I was up against I though I couldn't possibly compete against what other users were submitting. But you are right, which class of competition user's enter should be at their discretion.

Hold it!!! let me see your badge.......Just as I suspected, a silver code master, I'm going to have to escort you back to division 1.

These forums always give me a laugh.

I'm going to guess that noone is going to want to hear this but I don't think the prizes have to be as much as everyone else wants. I mean, don't get me wrong, fancy prizes are great but to me the fun of doing it and the joy of winning exceed the lust for prizes.

I think that 1 month is plenty of time to work on entries.

as far as theme goes I think that they should be evenly distributed throughout different genres and/or styles.

Example lineup:

1.most action packed FPS contest,

2. most addicting platformer contest,

3. best game of Any kind
featuring the easter bunny,

3 1/2. best sports game,

4. funniest Horror game, etc, etc.

Thats just my opinion of course.

I like to add humour here and there occasionally.

I think we are about due for a competition, the last one was in December, about 5 months ago. I'm happy with most themes but I think a space theme will go down quite well, everyone loves a good space game.
