Congratulations uzi idiot!

Definition
The term nostalgia describes a yearning for the past, often in idealized form.

Hello, forum dwellers, and welcome to the Nostalgic Remake Contest.
Your aim is to re-create your favourite classic game using FPS Creator. You will be given six weeks to create your entry.

Rules
You may use any version of FPS Creator to create your entry.
Your entry must not contain pirated media. This includes media from the original game.
You must begin designing your game from the start date (original post date). Games you have previously created, or were working on prior to the start of this competition are not allowed.
Your entry must be submitted by the deadline.
Your entry may be a maximum of 3 levels long.
Your entry can be submitted into only one category.
To avoid copyright infringement it is recommended that you do not use exact names, but instead similarities. It is also recommended that you do not attempt to market your remake, and that you do not publicise it greatly outside these forums. As the author of the game it is YOUR responsibility to ensure your game does not violate any copyright.

Deadline
14th of April 2011 is the deadline for you to submit your entry.

Categories
This contest will be split into two categories to allow for fair judging.

Category A# - Modern Remake
For games that follow the idea of the original game, but the primary focus is to use up to date graphics, e.g. shaders.
- 10 Points for theme.
- 20 Points for graphics.
- 10 Points for game-play.
- 5# Points for re-playability.
- 5# Points for individuality.

Category B# - Classic Style
For games that are orientated towards capturing the exact look and feel of the original game.
- 15 Points for theme.
- 10 Points for graphics.
- 15 Points for game-play.
- 5# Points for re-playability.
- 5# Points for individuality.

A good comparison between the two categories is the old/new versions of Goldeneye, where Classic styled games will aim for the original version and Modern Remakes for the new Goldeneye.

Prize List
1000 Game Creator Store points.
'Outdoor Enhancement' Model Pack (donated by Gencheff)
Gencheff has also decided to donate an extra prize per entrant. Many thanks.
Gas Station Pack (donated by mgarand)

I think I'll give this one a shot, since I missed the Horror Game Contest. Haven't released an FPS Creator game in over a year, and I could use a small break from BL2 anyway. So, right down to business then?...

Can we enter more than one game? One for each catagory, or two or more for the same?

Does the remake have to be exactly the same as the original as far as order of events and story, or can we spinoff our own tale?

Are teams allowed?

Are multiplayer remakes allowed?

EDIT: Just to throw this out there, because I've look into it before and I think it's worth a mention; fan games or remakes may violate the Derivative Works term in a copyright. So, it may be best to watch how far participants allow distribution to go

Define, "classic." For example, Grant Theft Auto IV is considered a "classic" on most consoles, what is stopping us from making a Modern Warfail 2 remake?

On a side note, I'll judge. I'm very critical of games.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

Quote: "Can we enter more than one game? One for each catagory, or two or more for the same? "

As it stands, the categories are to give fairer judging. The overall scores of all entries will be compared to find the winner. However, this may change when If there is enough entrants to support two completely different categories.

Quote: "Does the remake have to be exactly the same as the original as far as order of events and story, or can we spinoff our own tale?"

In both categories points are awarded for 'Individuality'. Although not necessarily meant for new storylines, if the storyline works well then I can't see why points wouldn't be awarded in this section.

Quote: "Are teams allowed?"

Yes, however the teams are responsible for distributing their own prizes.

Quote: "Are multiplayer remakes allowed?"

I can't see why not, however I would steer away from a multiplayer game as judging could be difficult.

I am aware of violation of terms and copyright. I support this competition on the basis that the games will have no impact on the sale of games released many years ago, and that the games themselves are not likely to venture further than the Showcase board.

Ok crispex, I've added you to the judges list.

Quote: "what is stopping us from making a Modern Warfail 2 remake?"

Nothing! However, it sort of ruins the idea of the contest.

I assumed as much. Just think that it may be more than worthy of making that last part of what you wrote clear to everyone that participates because the first part doesn't matter. I was going to link to an example of such an incident that I stumbled on in the past, but I can't find it. Not saying this competition is a bad idea, but there is a small risk that shouldn't be left in the dark to your participants. Might as well make sure that all of your participants are aware of the vilolation of copyright as well before they start posting download mirrors and videos all over the place. Better than safe than sorry, right?

DAMN! I wanted to do doom e1m8 (baron of hell bosses) but i started the level a week ago.

And I'm not sure if I can use doomsday engine models (not by id) or how to convert them to .x (they are in a .dmd format)

And is it ok to use HD textures from doomsday & risen3D (Hd doom ports)

I'm really confused

good frame rates matter... and a low ping might help XD

@NinjaKiller:
Its really down to your own opinion. Someone who started gaming in the 1990s like myself would have a much larger selection of games to choose from. People in your situation shouldn't worry, just make a game you feel is a 'classic'. P.S. CoD4 is my favourite CoD

@General Jackson
That would be awesome. I was wondering if anyone would do anything like that, seeing as the game does not have to be an FPS, even though it must made in FPSC.

Bingo! I'll have a go at this. Not made a game in FPSC yet, and thought doing a cover-version would be a great way to learn.

Great idea for a comp by the way. Thinking of doing a "Smash-TV" re-make

Yeah, puzzle games I guess would work. I mostly do puzzle designs in FPS Creator, as I'm not really thrilled with the AI and can't be bothered to download any better AI.

Either, its up to you, although I'd probably bend towards posting it here just to limit the number of different places entries are posted, purely to avoid legal dispute.

So....One month to go: how's everyone getting on?

I've not got anything worth showing yet. Have spent my time so far collecting the media I need, writing scripts and testing the game mechanics.

I've just started building my level (i'm only doing 1 level), but there are no entities and/or lights in it yet.

I'm on target according to my little plan though

To be honest, remaking the standart scifi levels wasn't as much fun as I thought it would be, so I left it behind...

I started to recreate C-12: Final Resistance, but its not funny without a lightning blade thingie.

Other games I looked into where Parasite Eve 2, Shadow Man and the first part of FF7 (yeah, I think shutting down that reactor is great First person Shooter media)...

but all of it is much too much work for such a small time period.

So, basically: I'm out, but I would like to donate my Stock gun retextures to first and second place.

Good luck ASTEK, maybe people aren't joining because there are only 2 weeks left and creating a game in two weeks is pretty tough, especially if you have a full time job too.

I've very close to my first build before i start the play-testing/debugging phase. I made the risky decision to install a mod yesterday so I'm really hoping that I haven't just shot myself in the foot!
