Work is being done right up until the last minute. Today a bunch of examples have been added for anyone to take a look at when it goes live tomorrow (including some basic 3D). I wish I had more time to try it out myself...

I had a play earlier and it's looking good. There's loads of examples, my favourites are the physics ones.

I'm looking forward to testing it out, hopefully it won't be long before all of the platform deployment features are available.

However, from what I gather the free version will be severely restricted, to the point where I feel it will be difficult to produce any functional game (e.g., 4,000 character limit).

How did you arrive at that limit? We get 10mb of storage free which is 10*1024^2 bytes, assuming a byte per character that gives us over 10 million characters to work with. So don't worry, their will be plenty of space for your code, it's your media that you'll need to worry about but if you need more space, simply upgrade to 250mb. The price won't break your bank account.

Hodgey, that 4000 character limit on code is in the terms of use.

Quote: "

After paying a subscription fee. If you decide to take the "GOLD" Subscription, but only during the period covered by your paid subscription:

1. you can also have access to a total of 250 Megabytes of storage space for your games and other applications on our servers

2. and source code files can exceed the 4,000 character limit.

"

Fair point. I retract my previous statement, sorry xCept.

But something doesn't quite add up, from the newsletter:
Quote: "It’s Free to Use ?

Yes, we provide 10 megabytes of free storage for your online projects. That’s enough for thousands of lines of programming code. More advanced projects will use this space for resources such as images, sounds and other media"

So is the 4,000 character limit per source code file and we just keep adding source code files as we need more characters? If that's the case at least it'll encourage the good practice of using functions.

Yah, that does seem wrong. Maybe they meant 4000 lines of code and not 4000 characters? Looking at my projects, most of them are way over 4000 characters, none are over 2000 lines.

4000 characters is the current limit. Don't shoot the messenger

There will either need to be a change to the "thousands of lines" quote or to the character limit. I won't comment on which I'm rooting for...

Here's a screenshot to whet your appetite:

Edit: sorry it's huge but I thought an un-fuzzy version would be appreciated

That wasn't the promise... the promise was that they both use the same libraries so anything added to one would be added to the other. It will take a while before a stable release of AppGameKit is available as so many new commands are being added (especially this week). Rest assured that functionality will be equal in both products as they are basically the same product.
[/repeat]

Edit: that example works fine for me Mr.V what browser are you using?

Here's a quick example I tried - https://freedom-engine.com/play.php?id=278

Another issue, FIREFOX spiked my CPU for near constant 25% usage... [Core i5 2500] even when doing nothing... another feature needed is replay as clicking play just compiles again and again...

Hoping this feedback is useful... Bax? perhaps a thread for FDE feedback?

Possibly not... I have a rough list from Lee but they might not work in the FE. I'll try to dig it out.

Interesting...simple code that runs fine in AppGameKit is compiling, and running, but not with expected results. Anyone else getting this?

Can anyone test this code? Just copy/paste.

In AppGameKit, there are three sprites that are on screen, and parallax a little. In FE, the text is there, but the sprites aren't. Odd. Am I missing something simple?

Could be you need to add media for those sprites?

Maybe using zero doesn't work yet...

Well, it looks like I'll be passing on the Freedom Engine

No WebGL on the iPad, and if I can only use a desktop, might as well use AGK.

Yup, and cannot use IE either...

Chrome is a nono for me now and FireFox I only use to produce pointless OGV video files...

I hate using FF, IE does me wonders without being weird on me and asking for half a billion plug-ins just to function...

But I did love how FDE [as I like to put it according to the TLA Convention lol] Simply worked without asking for anything to be installed... but FireFox using my CPU like crazy when nothing is happening... is a massive nono... I just hope the update for 3D AppGameKit is out soon...

But Rich Dersheimer, did you not install FireFox for IPad? or does it not exist?

EDIT

Thinking about it... this means FDE will only function on the two browsers and not IE or what?

For me that is hopeless... I cannot and simply will not force users onto browsers... specially ones I do not like...

MrValentine its not TGC fault that IE has terrible html5 support, but hopefully Microsoft will address that in IE10.

baxslash is subscribing to the Gold accounts available right now? Id like to port a few of my AppGameKit games but most of them are over 4000 lines never mind 4000 chars!

MrV, I couldn't find Firefox on the iApp store, so I'm guessing no Freedom Engine on iPads until Apple updates iOS to include WebGL.

There seem to be some videos on how to install WebGL on a jailbroken iPad, but that's not for me.

And no Chrome or Firefox for Kindle Fire, so it looks like I won't be doing any coding on any of my mobile devices whilst sipping my beverage of choice at the local coffee shop.

*sigh*

I know... I am having to wait for Win8 to release hope its soon then hopefully IE10 will also release for Win7 shortly after...

I do like the idea of FDE but I accept it is early days

I do like the idea of being able to use AppGameKit from say a friends house or while out and about over PUBLIC Wifi...

Rich...

Thats a real shame... kind of idolises the failures of Apple quite rightly I suppose... Android has FF Opera Chrome and even a shoddy built in browser which I always presumed was Chrome lol... even other browsers... Apple has some catching up to do...

Me... Waiting for Windows8 phones and tablets and Laptops... and upgrade my PC to it too... just not anytime soon... but fingers crossed it can be

BatVink... so there is just one subscription? how much is it?

The Road Map looks promising

I will need to setup a dedicated email for FDE... so I cannot even find out the price right now...

Firefox is not available on iOS and never will. There is however a tool which brings your favourites to iOS which open in your chosen browser.

As for the FE, it fails to load at all for me. (And I've already posted in the FE forums!)

Thanks BatVink ill be getting a Gold accounts within the hour.

Ive tried on the Playbook and I get the same error. The Playbook has webgl support so these games should run fine on this device. So is there a way to update the Freedom-Engine to allow the Playbook browser aswell? Also you can wrap html5/webgl apps into a app for the Playbook store so when will be able to download the compiled games?
