I am curious as to how diverse the browser selection is for game developers.

I use Firefox on my desktop PCs; and Chrome on my laptop. (Seems to work better on there).

What do you use?

IE10 on laptop (W7). IE8 on desktop (Vista).

I tried Firefox and Chrome but couldn't see what all the fuss was about - and I had to learn something new for negligible return. I like to keep things simple.

With all browsers our main problem is broadband line speed - < 1MB out here in the wilds.

IE10/11+ on Desktop/Windows Phone/Surface Pro/Netbook/Laptop etc

And only FireFox/Chrome/Opera when testing websites before releasing them to client sites... otherwise have absolutely no reason to touch them...

Safari is just a fad now anyway... though I admit I did enjoy playing with it for a few minutes when it was still available... Sadly and fortunately Apple made it not important for me to test with it any longer ^^

They no longer bother with non Apple products...

To top that off the EU Browser Choice List no longer lists it as a choice...

So no more Safari for Windows

I mainly use chrome on both windows and android. But ocationally I use firefox aswell. I also use firefox for debugging webpages since the developer options are awesome

Chrome - sometimes IE when @ school ^^

but yeah chrome - I have Opera too but i dont use it to surf, just to play Unepic (before it entered steam) and to read mangas that didnt like Chrome...

Hmm, not as diverse as I feared. Good point about the Firefox Debugger, it is brilliant for web development; better at debugging a web page than Adobe Dreamweaver!

Chrome is pretty slick for my laptop; you know, for a bit of reading and video watching, nothing fancy. Only thing is its disk space inefficient.

I started using firefox ten years ago because it was the only browser that supported tabs.

I use Safari on my phone, Stainless on my Mac, and Luakit on my laptop and desktop running Linux. Luakit is the best browser ever. Period. Ultra-lightweight, easily scriptable, and ridiculously efficient (Vim-style keybindings).

You get 500MB extra space on Dropbox... I get 500MB extra space on Dropbox

I used Opera until fairly recently but that seems to be going down hill so I switched to Firefox. I would recommend Chrome too.

I'm on GNU/Linux so I sometimes use Epiphany too. It's really lightweight and I quite like it but it does crash quite often.

It's well worth the effort, and to be honest it's no effort at all. There are tons of great extensions that have allowed me to customize my browser to be just the way I want it.

Firefox and Chrome can be as simple or complicated as you like. If simplicity is what you're after I would recommend Chrome as it's extremely clean.

Firefox. It's been my favorite for a LOOONG time, but I did stick with Chrome pretty exclusively between its first release up until last year when it started becoming more sluggish and bogged down. I went back to Firefox and haven't really looked back, there's a lot more useful features in FF that I actually use!

Yeah I forgot to mention Mr Handy's comments are so true!

I remember when I was in fulltime web-design; most of my work was about getting things to work in IE. Only about 20% of your time was spent doing any web design.

Back in the day no true web designer could argue that he or she is not a hacker... Everything has to be hacked to work in IE.

After awhile, supporting IE wasn't that difficult. Sure I had to add a few specific rules to handle IE, but it was a trivial matter and rarely consumed any extra time. Today's version I find I have to do very little if anything at all to support it separately. The biggest problem with IE I noticed is when site's don't specify a doctype, that's when things don't display like you expect.

You must be real good with web development Phaelax, judging buy your TGC forum theme. I found IE support development difficult; particularly with javascript effects, CSS and CSS2. But that is going back 7/8 years when J-Query wasn't all that popular..

I do not, mostly because I don't feel any problem with using english instead of swedish, in some situations, im even more comfortable using English. Also, the google translate feature is... google translate which is pretty terrible with grammar.

As for IE, from a user persepective, there isn't that many diffirences between IE and chrome/firefox apart from that it's a bit slower. But from a developer perspective, IE is a total pain. The problem isn't that IE has less features, everything that chrome/FF can do can be done in IE 10 aswell. But because microsoft don't seem to know how to make backwards compatible programs, a lot of companies are stuck using IE 7 or 8 which doesn't support any HTML5/CSS3 features. As a result, if you are developing a site for a wide audience, you may be unable to use any of the fancy HTML5 features what so ever, there are ways to do it with HTML5, but as far as I know, CSS3 is nearly impossible.

IE have no ad block feature, no user scripts, poor basic functions. Also IE stores bookmarks as files, so they have name length limitation!

IE is an out-of-the-box browser that you will use only to download a better browser or some software from MS site after installing OS (directx, dotnet, etc...). In windows XP it was really useful as it had windows update exclusive feature. Now it is just a wooden stool that pretend to be a leather sofa.

Why would they be stuck with old versions of IE? I just assumed people were too lazy to update.

If this is the case why don't they just use a different browser?

This I don't understand. At work they insist on us using IE, we're getting a new phone system in that's internet based (don't know when, it was due to be ready to go in December), which only works in Chrome, so we'll get Chrome, but are forbidden for using it for anything else - IE will be used for everything else. Probably due to how IT has everything set up. However, IE used to keep freezing on my old computer (which is awkward when doing a pre-sales call to find it suddenly freezes). When I worked in an office for a recruitment agency it was the same, but on a lower spec machine, which made the situation much worse. When I did work experience for a newspaper, at least they were sensible and had Firefox installed.

On the bright side where I work they're gradually introducing Windows 7 PCs, I started using mine this week, the version of IE they've got is a lot better and it performs significantly better and works with everybody we need. Nice being able to use something a little more up-to-date.

Still, I love the fact the second hand store I worked in was still using DOS on the computers and Floppy Disks to network between them. To be fair, we never had any problems with the system.

IE still lives on in great numbers because of companies and because it's already installed. And some scripts (usually for in-house sites) built for IE6 don't like to work with anything else. As a result, other browsers aren't allowed to be installed (or users just plain don't have permission to do so).

Fortunately, I don't see activeX scripts as often online anymore as I used to, so hopefully all this IE-only crap within companies will soon die out.

I can't wait to see what happens after April 8 2014 (when Microsoft cuts support for XP).
I have been temping at a telecoms company and every PC in the building runs XP! You'd think a tech company would be more up-to-date.

Every Blockbuster store in the country (if there are any left!) still uses the original DOS-based system written for the company in 1985! It got the job done but it was horrendously slow and laborious to operate.

Just because support is cut doesn't necessarily mean it won't work anymore, you just don't get any updates.

The image I posted was safe. I don't take responsibility on your own actions on any site, especially when a warning has been posted which you ignored. And that is not porn site, that is imageboard of anime site. I take anime wallpapers there. That was a good example as it have lots of tags in page title. If you can provide a better example I will replace mine with it.

The main problem of IE that if you want a newer version - you must get a new OS!

What is a new version? New version is a support of the web latest standards.

Maximum versions for OS:

Win 7,8 -- IE 11
Vista -- IE 9
XP -- IE 8

So basically a newest browser will cost you a price of Win7, even if you don't need (or it is not suits your business) a new OS. Nuff said.

It is really interesting how many major companies are still using DOS based terminals. It is 2013!!!!???. What is going on? What is up with these IT Managers? Why are they training staff to use 30 year old technology? Why not make use of the experience they have of modern UI standards? Why not utilize a mouse? why not utilize a toolbar component? a ribbon component, windows shortcuts... would these not improve working performance in this financial climate?

Does anyone have an experienced answer? Is it because it is cheaper to keep the old system than to replace with a new one?

In the second hand store I worked in, they said to upgrade they'd need new computers, new software and said it would be costly to set up, the manager suggested it'd cost £4000 to set up, he felt as the system they had worked, it wasn't worth the money to upgrade it. He had one of these, "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" attitudes.

Of course, we did have some non-DOS computers, one for research on how much items are worth and one for doing accounts. All customer related data? DOS & Floppy Disks. In all honesty, we never actually had a problem with that system - it was effective enough.

In some cases I imagine it is a "if it ain't broke..." situation. I mean, I imagine there are some tasks that really wouldn't benefit from a GUI or mouse... in fact, a mouse tends to slow us down relative to a keyboard for basic functions (the main advantage is ease-of-use).

I use Safari as my primary browser on most of my devices, Firefox on my (often ignored) Linux box and IE10 on my (slightly less often ignored) Windows box.
