The Forums have more than 250 Classic Avatars to choose from or you may link to your own Custom Avatar Type:

from your User Profile, select Site and choose from the Dropdown list, or Custom and include the URL

While the forums tend to resize images embedded via the [img][/img] tags, imgur.com offers a number of image sizes & formats by adding a single character to url filenames which the Forums respect:
