DarkBASIC Network IDE - Official thread

This is the official thread of what we'll be referring to as DBN or DarkBASIC Network. This is an alternative IDE to that of DarkBASIC Professional not DarkBASIC Classic. So far the DBN team consists of five members: me, Cellbloc Studios, Thanatos, Spline, and Powersoft.

This is the basic outline of what we are trying to accomplish, before we release the final version (we will release full source code of the project before then, but the final version will include all the media and the latest compilation of the code that will be used)

Basics of what we try to accomplish:
1) Mimic the appearance of BlueIDE
2) Sending of messages to other computers through the IDE - a way of communication between differenct computers (connected to a network) who are working on the same project.
3) The ability to have account files to customize the IDE to that of how the user wishes every time it is loaded. Thus the reason for the logon process
4) Easy to use help files
5) Gentle Appearance in the look of the program.
6) For the code to actually compile

Stuff we are not planning at this time:
1) Online group projects through Ethernet, Cable, DSL, Internet, Satellite, etc.

What we have so far:
1)Visual Studio .NET 2005 GUI
2) At the moment we are reaching 8000 lines of [visual basic.net]code, which is ever increasing

In what areas do we need help:
1) Graphics (Logos, icons and misc images, etc.)
2) Odds and end of code (Color coding of the text, getting interaction between programs, etc.)
3) Advice on features of the IDE

So we need:
1) 1 forum members who can help with graphics relating to DBN
2) All forum members can give advice for the project but only those who I say our the DBN team members can say if the advice is acceptable for the project or not, and people can look at the source code provided at the bottom or close to the bottom of this page, I will ask that this is the only forum where you use any part of this code, but you can however have links to this forum whenever you want.

Limitations of communication between members of the team:
1) Nothing can be sent to me/Thanatos through email
2) Media can be stored by attaching files to your posts
3) This is an open source project so media/ code examples can be put on this thread

Requirements of the program:
1) WindowsXP (not sure if works on other platforms)
4) .NET framework - This is required now that DBN will powered by Visual STudio .NET. You might eventually need the full .NET framework, not just the compact framework.

All who help with the creation of this project will be in mentioned in the credits and will be thanked for their efforts. Any help will be much appreciated.

Sincerely,
1tg46, Thanatos and the rest of the DarkBASIC Network Team

Any part of what has been stated can change at any time without any notice.

That is basically what we are trying to do. We will have the basic interface of blueIDE and add areas into the interface so you can communicate between your group members. Their will also be a button in the toolbar so you can update the code that the rest of the team has been working on.

Quote: "its stupid right ??"

No it isn't that is basically that is how I planeed the program would be.

Would you like to be the first forum member to join (besides Thanatos and Me)?

The areas we need help in are graphics and advice later on we will be looking of rcode experts (well not exactly experts but people familiar with coding in DBP)

hey alpha zero, ever heard of an "edit" button? You got 5 posts in a row with less than 10 words each.

So basically, this IDE allows you to share projects over a local network? Doesn't any windows program allow that? Just map a drive to a shared project folder.

great, We first need help with the main logo which should be a bitmap 243x226 in dimensions. i am thinking about having two DarkBASIC pyramids with something connecting them, I have a graphic as a filler right now but needs to be improved.

This is a serious thread, please do not post just to post but have a reason for posting.

We are still looking for some sane useful members of the forums to help with this project.

Your programming an IDE in dbp? That seems a little silly, considering it would be much faster and reliable in C++..

To answer that question:
Quote: "Stuff we are not planning at this time:

Quote: "So basically, this IDE allows you to share projects over a local network? Doesn't any windows program allow that? Just map a drive to a shared project folder."

This will go beyond just having a shared folder for everything, I am embedding a communication system for the editor to communicate between the different computers. This will also mean instant access to all the files of the project will be up to date with the rest of the programmers.

Quote: "Your programming an IDE in dbp? That seems a little silly, considering it would be much faster and reliable in C++.."

Their will eventually be a VS.NET2003 version, but at the moment we are not doing this.

Why not just build it web based? And use the DB Compiler to run the code? Since the code is just text based anyways. Therefore people can be anywhere on the planet (or whatever planet Alpha Zero is from) and work together. Just use the BlueIDE as your client program such as a normal browser, then have a server app run and collect all the message request from the clients, and pipe them out to the other clients. You can build this in about a month in VB 6.0 or two months in C++

Heck, I can put this together using VBScript (maybe).

[EDIT]
More thought on this. You can do it my way AND use it locally OR Internet based.

[EDIT x 2]
You know, if I have time this weekend, I will build the entire project with built in Source Code Control.

The thing is I can not use a web based server or do anything that has to do with the internet in that matter becuase of 2 reasons:
1) Parents
2) Money Issues

@1tg46

I somewhat understand. What does your Parents and Money have to do with it?

Maybe if I explain what I am suggesting a different way....

If you goto http://www.whatismyip.com/ this will give you your IP address.

I will pause here until you reply. Then I will show you how at no cost to yourself (or your Parents) you can use a "Peer 2 Peer" system to connect your IDE to another IDE and share/chat away.

First off my personnel computer is not connected to the internet(Due to parents).
Second my parents are really strict so I can only do basic stuff on the web. (They even get fumed when I tell them the titles of some of these forums, and they were fumed when I told them about these forums until I told them that they are not technically chat rooms).

So as you may come to understand that it is impossible to do this with my parents knowing what I am doing through AOL, because then they'll get fumed again.

Quote: "connect your IDE to another IDE and share/chat away"
That woiuld be basically a chat room, and I would then probably get my internet access taken away.

As for the money part, I misunderstood you.

And as I have stated repeatedly in this forum and the one in the Work in Progress forum. I am not that advanced in programming so I do not know how to make programs interact with the internet. If you are interested in doing this yourself, when I am done I will give you full source code to the project and see what you can do with it(this will be in quite awhile).

The code is confusing enough as it is!

I know about using the [edit] marks in posts, I posted twice to put emphasis on this subject.

@1tg46:

Thank you for your explanation of your situation. Please understand that I really like your idea and I wanted to help in what ways I could.

It is so rare on this Team Request Forum to see intelligent people typing and using correct English instead of "plz help!! i sux and u need 2 help me becuse hole prg is 2 big (add childish smiles graphics here)" it gives me a headache to have to decipher what the heck they are talking about.

Please keep your code. BlueIDE has its own source code that you can get just by installing the application.

As for using a dialup, so am I, so there is nothing wrong with that. What I was suggesting is that you could get a small web hosting place (sometimes free, sometimes $4.95 a month) and you could deposit your source code there for your team members to check in and out. I know that emailing team members source code and other assets is a royal pain and nothing gets done. That is one of the reasons I enjoy your idea.

If you need any help, I would be more than happy to try and assist you in any way I can.

Take care and best of luck.

I can't stand writing like an idiot (I am just bad at grammar, but not as bad as some). So I write half ways proper so people can anwer my questions and so I can answer theirs.

Quote: "I can't stand writing like an idiot"

No offense to foreign forum members who can't speak english in full

Quote: "Please keep your code."

I do plan on keeping the code and still working with it.

Quote: "BlueIDE has its own source code that you can get just by installing the application."

that is the primary editor I use to make this program, and I have viewed his code but I am not sure how I can implement any of that into my program.

Quote: "I know that emailing team members source code and other assets is a royal pain and nothing gets done. That is one of the reasons I enjoy your idea."

??? What exactly do you mean by "That is one of the reasons I enjoy your idea"

Quote: "If you need any help, I would be more than happy to try and assist you in any way I can. "

Right now we just need graphics people, but until I finish the outline or interface of the IDE I will not release any source code.

I am thinking about not releasing the code to the forums, but to the members who are seriously going to be on the team. I would do this through emailing each of them the code, but they would not be able to send me any emails.

P.S. I will be keeping an eye on the individual people who are interested in being a team member, if I can trust them with these guidelines stated at the top post I will give them source code other wise I will not. A new condition I am adding to people who want to join the team is that they are to not give any source code to non team members.I might send updates depending on if my parents allow me too.

@Cellbloc Studios
Just to comfirm that you do want to join the team, right? Their is no obligation and you do not need to stay up to date with the project, you just need to help whenever you can when asked (if you can).

Off that topic:
I am reaching 1400 lines of code, the program will require BlueGui V2 (latest edition)and right now I have over 120 gadgets from the plugin being used in the project.

I am setting up the gadget system by not using global commands but by making global types.Example:

This is basically how the gadget system is setup giving gadgets meaningful but long names. I get through all the typing by copying and pasting the text.

[edit]edited the text to include what is going on right now[/edit]

Right now I am writing the help section of the source files, so that everyone can understand the basics of the program.

Almost reaching 1900 lines of code.

This is one of the files that will be shipped with DBN. This program will encrypt any media that you wish, all you need to do is remember the seed value.

The file is less then 400KB:

Reaching 2300 lines of code

This is a pretty good acomplishment, we have added to the menu system a way to call anonymous programs from a programs folder, and I am adding a debug mode for the program that I will explain when it is complete.

The basics of the interface are pretty much done, I am working out some of the gadget bugs a tiny bit more, and am also adding many gadgets for compiler windows/menu windows.

Right now since I have the menu system partially complete we need third party programs that you think will be useful to programmers.
Examples:
1)An encryption program(a link for it is in the previous post)
2)Calculator(we still need, and it needs to have more than just the basic functions)
3)A project maker(we still need)

And we also could use any program that would be considered useful to programmers. The programs most be made in DarkBASIC unless the program is good enough and uses features that DBP normally does not use. And the program should be relatively small. All the programs should have source code provided and their names will be mentioned in the credits.

Now for some fun stuff for the forums:
If you can't make or just don't want to make a program that is useful for programmers. We are accepting programs (still relatively small executables) that stretch the limits of DBP and can show off the capabilities a programmer may have. These programs do not need to be related to programming, but you (not someone elses material)must make them, and they must be made with DarkBASIC.

For both of the program types (the ones relating to programming, and the ones just for fun) I have only 10 spaces each for each of the programs, these programs will be acessible from the tools programs menu. I would much appreciate it if source code files could also given for the programs that you have created.

It all depends on what you want to do.

You could:
work on the graphics
help with the menu system
help with setting up accounts
ideas
make programs to be shipped with IDE (see previous post)
etc.

You do what you want to do. This program is a work as you go project, any part of the project can changed or altered (within reason). At the moment I am trying to fix some bugs with the latest code. Maybe you can help?

Probelem:
The menu system sometimes requires you to select a menu item and it doesn't select, but when you try a second time it works.

If you can help solve this bug then it would be much appreciated.

I may release another code update by the end of this week.

Anyone can join the team who wants to.

Great. You should also provide a link for a "todo.txt" that people could download and look at the list.

I ran the program and noticed a couple of little minor things. I really mean minor too. Most of the planet earth uses the date format "dd/mm/yy". I will find a way to read the regional settings in windows so we can add it to the program. Also, the time gets cut off. I cannot run a resolution of less then 1600 x 1200 else I scream my head off because I cannot see all my code at once.

I will take a few more looks and see what to work in next.

We plan on updating the code as soon as we fix the debug section of the editor. Right now we are putting the logon process for the editor on hold until we finish the main appearance of the editor. I will talk with 1tg46 and see if we can get it staightened out.

And the todo section of the program does not need to be in a text file. If you are using BlueIDE then thier is a project organization button, if you click that then it will have the sem-complete list of what we need to do. If you do not use BlueIDE then open up the .dbpro file in a text editor and scroll down to the bottom, that is where the todo list will be.

If you are running to problems that you can't seem to find the solution to, attach a file to your post called bugs.txt and I will make sure to download it and look at it right away.

Thanks for all of your help,
Thanatos

I suck at coding (I'm still learning).
Let me restate that, I can code stuff for games, not for editors or applications, if I could I sure as hell would join.
And from me that's a compliment, pimpin from me means sweet, its awesome.

I suck at any coding also, this is simple right now because all I have to do is with gadgets and dealing with gadgets. The tough part will be opening and writing files and stuff.

And if you don't work on the main part of the program keep in mind:

Quote: "

Yes, I have the Enhancement Pack. I will try and post "bugs.txt" by early monday. This weekend is a tuff one since the company I am building this program for, the board members meet this weekend and it's crunch time.

Reaching 2600 lines of code. Right now we are trying to enable opening and saving of dba files using examples from paddy that came with BlueGUIv2[final]. But yet with no luck, later on I will post again maybe with a code example.

Working with 1tg46 on DarkBASIC Network.
Coming along great.
