For the shotgun, I just used Anim8or. All I did was load the picture into the modeller as a reference. Constuct a spline around the perimeter of the gun and then extrude it. Then I just started tweaking and cutting from there until it looked like I wanted it to look. After that, I used Conv3DS to convert the exported model. Then I go into notepad and tweak the .X File to remove the problems that Conv3DS introduces. Then to UV map it I use LithUnwrap.

If you want to learn how to model, go to www.3dtotal.com. They have a whole slew of tutorials that take you step for step. You do have to be flexible though, because most of their tutorials are for Max and not everyone has the major bucks it takes to get that program, so you have to look at the tutorial and sort of translate it into whatever software you happen to be using. If you get yourself a copy of GMax, it should be pretty much identical (or am I mistaken? You folks that have tried both let me know)

anim8or isn't directly compatible with DBPro. after trotting the model through the list of packages and processes I listed though, they are.

Anyway I just wanted to say thanks a mil for puttting all that work into these models GMan. All of them are extremely good. So thanks. If I ever get my lazy but around to learning Lithunwrap
I'll post the results up on here.

I've bein driving since the age of three; if you don't belive me ask my parents, you can find them at the county hospital for the mentally imbalanced.

Lithunwrap is extremely easy to use at its simplest...

Load the model, click the "Select" menu and click "Select All" then click the "Tools" menu and pick "UV Mapping" (I think that's what it says) then pick a UV wrap method (i.e. box, cyllinder, plane, etc...) then save the resulting UV-map. Then all you have to do is paint over the top of it. Of course you'll have all kinds of stretched polygons and such going this route, but at least it's a start.

Little hard to see from that photo... Kinda looks like an MP5K (http://www.remtek.com/arms/hk/mil/mp5k/mp5k.htm)

Hey while I was looking for a picture of the MP5K, look what I found:

http://www.remtek.com/arms/hk/mil/g36/g36.htm That's kind of cool looking, even if it was developed for the Bundeswehr... Heck they couldn't fight their way out of a girl scout camp, but the weapon looks cool.

When Lithunwrap complains about no UVMap, that's not a problem. That's what you are in there to make after all. All of the vertices are crammed up in the top left corner. Just select all, then UVMap it. A UVMap is a set of coordinates that are assigned to every vertice in a model. The U value corresponds to the X position on the texture graphic. The V value corresponds to the Y position. All you are doing is recording in the model how you want the texture applied to the model.

*cries* Why God why? why does 3d chat attract the strangest of the bunch?

As has been said many times before, copy and paste the code from the snippets and/or the source buttons into a notepad document. Then from there hit "Save As.." Down at the bottom of the dialog, where it says "save as type: '.txt file' plain text'" change that to '*.* all files' Then type in the 'file name' box a suitable name i.e.
'pump shotgun' for the shotgun and stick on '.X' on the end of it.

so: 'pump shotgun.X"

Hit the ok button.

Other methods:

Quote: "Simply paste the code from the "Source" button into an ascii text file and give it a .X extension."

Quote: "On your computer, go to "Start", "Programs", "Accessories", "Notepad". (That'll start the Notepad pogram). Then paste the text into Notepad. Save the file. Then in Explorer, go find the file and change the ".txt" extension to the filename to ".x". That's all that's to it."

Or simply download the attachment with all of the .X files I posted back on page 2 or so

What version of lithunwrap do you have? I have 1.3 which was the last freeware version. Now all you do is open LithUnwrap. Click File, Model, Open. (For this example use the chaingun model because it has no UV coordinates). When it complains about it having no UV coordinates, just click ok and ignore it. The model will load and there will be a small white box in the upper left corner of the client area. That's all the vertices all sitting in one spot. Now click Select, All. The little white box should have turned red. Now click Tools, UV Mapping, Planar. This should pop up a dialog. Click the "Z" radio button, Click the "Top/Bottom" radio button. Then click the "Ok" Button. There you will see the chaingun's vertices all spread out. Now there's a lot you can do from here, but to keep this simple, we'll assume you're done for now. Now, Click File, UV Map, Save. This will save the Image that you now see on your screen to a .bmp file. Click File, Model, Save and that will save the UV Mapping coordinates you just created. Now go open a paint program, grab the .BMP you just created. Using the lines on the image, paint the texture for your model and save it. Then, go into Lithunwrap again. Reload the same model as before. Over on the right hand side is a treeview control. Click the "+" beside "Materials" (if it's not already expanded). There should be just one material, named "blank". Double click on "Blank", that should load a new dialog. Where it says "Diffuse Map", Make "Map Type" say "Bitmap". Click the "Properties" Button beneath it. That should load another dialog. Click the "Change" button on the new dialog. Then load the bitmap that you drew with the texture. Click "Ok" on this and the other dialog. Then save your model again. If you want, you can click Preview, Show Model and see the model rendered.

Attached is conv3ds.exe

Through all of this, I just noticed something odd... The routine I used to export these seems to have mirrored the Z coordinates for these models... They're all showing up left handed for some reason. Odd that...

DUDE!!!
These models are great...
what parts of the .x files do you remove to fix problems created by converters?

Also i cant believe people dont know about DOS and command prompt... holy s**t, whats going on!!!!???
There is an alternative for converting 3D files... try searching 3D Exploration, look hard enough and you should find it for free, ive got a trial version that for some reason works even though the expiry date has passed.
