Events that show the world is coming to an end:

1. First Bush wins, twice. (plz lets not start a political debate)
2. There's 9-11
3. Tsunami, completly devouring a country and shift others 50ft (lost city was found though)
4. a tornado in California? its unheard of!
5. here in ohio, ice storms like nothing, insane flooding, only to freeze again in the streets leaving several feet thick ice around homes
6. Chain of stores burn down, only survivor is a turtle with a face of satan on its shell which previously didn't show up
7. also in ohio, currently 9 different cases in the past 2 weeks of ppl causes accidents on the highway.... by going the wrong way!

Weird stuff happens every year, but lately it seems to be more than just 1 thing.

Won't the Earth... theoretically be destroyed eventually? If man doesn't get it first? The sun is a star isn't it...? And... don't stars eventually... go boom?

EDIT: You left out the plethora of Hurricanes that hit Florida this year! Plus, Mount St. Helens has gone off not once, but twice, since August. But the second eruption can be credited to the Tsunami... I'll explain in a second.

The sun won't go boom before the earth ends... it'll fizzle first, causing an ice age unlike anything that we've ever seen. It will actually dim so dark that the earth's core will cool to a point where the earth loses magnetism and gravity. Volcanoes will erupt to exaust the core's remaining heat, and these eruptions will pretty much evaporate most of the planet's water that isn't ice already. Then it will explode and pretty much disintegrate everything from Mercury to Mars. The planets that are farther out (Jupiter, Saturn, etc.) will get pulled toward the sun as the sun cools back down, and eventually it will regulate itself back to the size it is now... but no more earth Have no fear, though, we still have a few billion years before that happens, and by then, if Humanity hasn't destroyed itself or evolved into some other species entirely, I'm sure we'll have figured out a way off this rock and we will have settled other planets. Great, just what the universe needs... humans everywhere!

Scientists have been saying that the tsunami's earthquake caused all of the strange weather that followed it by actually throwing the earth into a slightly different orbit, temporarily. The earth wobbles... this is something you should know if you passed the seventh grade. But the earthquake's force (at 8.7 - 9.3 it was the most powerful earthquake recorded in human history) actually made the earth slightly sway outward, away from the sun, and then back inward, towards the sun. Right now, we're swaying back towards the sun, and in a few months we'll be swaying away from it again. This isn't as cataclysmic as it might sound, but there is one slightly possible downside to it... the moon. Because we're swaying and the moon isn't, some scientists wonder if the moon might loosen it's gravitational hold on us. The moon is a satellite, remember, orbiting us much akin to ISS. What tipped off scientists is that ISS had to fire stabilization boosters for the first time ever recently (not including it's maiden launch) so it could stay in our orbit. If ISS had to, the moon might have to as well... and I shouldn't have to explain why the moon's orbit is so important to us! But that's all theory, and I'm not worried about it. Even if the moon crashes into us, we can't do anything... so we may as well admire the view

I need to stop watching the Discovery Channel, hehe

- Matt

EDIT: PS. - The earthquake set off several volcanoes, as earth quakes typically do, but Mount St. Helens (this second time) was a delayed reaction and no one knows why. Some people think it has to do with the Yellowstone Park volcano, but I'm not getting into that. If you want to see something scary, go google "Yellowstone Volcano" I think that's something a bit more immediate that you'll want to keep an eye on.

http://www.solcomhouse.com/yellowstone.htm

^ Information about the Yellowstone super volcano. Something this link doesn't mention is what would happen if Mount Rainier or Mount Fuji went off... those are also super volcanoes. As it was explained on the Discovery Channel, think about Mount St. Helens' eruption in the early 1980's. Now imagine that happening again, only this time, the eruption was 2,000 times as powerful! YIKES!

LOL Eric yeah it would be kinda neat to watch. I went and got a few images of Supernova's for you, though. You can take a look at them here:

http://www.crystalinks.com/supernovanews1.html

That's basically what our sun would look like during the various stages of it's final explosion, but that won't happen for 3E+1 trillion years (I have absolutely no clue how long that translates to or how to even solve that equation, hehe)

Not so sure about that. The moon isn't very solid (at least on the crust) and it wouldn't be moving so fast so as to actually destroy the planet. Probably cause a few earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and end life as we know it, but the earth will probably continue existing as the large rock it is... but with an extra large pimple on it.

And if it hits, it is already orbiting us, so it will have less of an impact as it is actually moving closer to being level with the ground. It may just be like one big bowling ball and roll around the Earth. Though as TKF15H said ...

Just wanted to say a couple of things which could have been said because I stopped reading after the first few posts.

1) Our sun will expand to become a red giant which will "swallow" all the inner planets. So that will be the final end of Earth. Our sun's final death will be to collapse into a white dwarf (or is it a black dwarf, its small either way). Unfortunately our sun is not massive enough to produce a supernova (big boom), or neutron star, or black hole, or anything else strange.

2) The ice storm in Ohio is not unheard of. I am from Cincinnati originally and about 10 years ago we had a similar thing happen. We were playing ice hockey on the streets, THE STREETS! And we were out of school for 2 weeks. It was the best winter ever!

3) Yes the world is coming to end, it is always coming to an end. Just like your life, my life, and everyone's life is coming to an end. "As soon as you are born, you begin to die." - Me as far as I know

Sorry to contest with you Billy, but all stars experience a supernova... all of 'em. Some are just bigger and prettier than others. If something doesn't experience a supernova then it isn't a star.

Our sun is a white dwarf right now. A black dwarf doesn't emit heat (or I think that's how it was). I'm 100% certain that it will shrivel and cause an ice age before it starts to expand again... evidence of this is in the coronal loops that are popping up through the sun's photosphere (those are those fire rings that you can see if you look at an image of the sun). There's also a constant event on the sun called "turbulent convection" that shows that the sun is cooling even now as you read this. But again, this won't happen for another 3-6 billion years (I can't remember exactly how long but I know it's in that range) so you don't need to buy a bigger jacket quite yet

Quote: "even if the earth's core cooled it would still have mass, and therefore, still have gravity."

That's right Haxor, it does still have gravity... but if the core cools it doesn't have the heat necessary to create magnetism, and without magnetism, the earth won't be able to maintain gravity because ions will discharge in the core improperly, causing a couple of earthquakes and, eventually, stoppage of the core's flow. If that happens, well, you get the picture, hehe.

Wow, I'm like Bill Nye the Science guy. But Matt Rock doesn't rhyme. so I'm Matt Rock the Science... okay, you know what? Don't finish that

EDIT: Warning! The following is probably extremely boring for people who aren't interested in science stuff! If you read it, fall asleep three sentences in, hit your head on your desk, spill a beverage on your keyboard and give yourself a concussion, I'm not liable

Mass is the most basic element of gravity, yes... but there's more to it. In the core of the earth there is a constant lava flow which flows opposite the earth's natural rotation. This lava flow acts like the earth's equilibrium, so to speak... balancing out the the rotational speed. So where do ions come in? The magnetosphere, which spears right through the center of the earth, is kept powered by solar wind. this basically keeps the lava flow regulated in terms of speed, by grabbing ions and discharging them again. the magnetosphere also creates a polar magnetism within the core that helps keep ions regulated. Another effect of the magnetosphere is that these ionic discharges help keep the core warm... if the core cools too much the ions dicharge improperly. If the ions discharge improperly for any reason, it causes a disruption in the flow and can have a minor or major effect. A minor effect: The earth wobbles slightly faster than it should. A major effect: an earthquake (because the lava is slamming against the walls as it's disrupted). It's one of the three known causes of an earthquake, but this is the rarest form and happens very rarely. But what would happen if the earth's core cooled? The lava would get denser (turning into a substance called basalt), the ions would discharge improperly because they'd be moving through a denser substance, and eventually the flow would stop. If that happened, the earth's own orbital rotation would create a counter-gravitational effect, one that would pretty much put Newton out of business. So you see, keeping the perfect balance of ions in the earth's core via the magnetosphere is crucial... in fact, that's why the magnetosphere goes through the center of the earth!

Regulating ions is only one of the many roles that the magnetosphere plays. the crucial role for our planet? Keeping solar winds from scorching us. One of Jupiter's moons, Io, has the second hottest surface in our solar system (second to Mercury). Why is it so hot? Because it has a very, very weak magnetosphere. Earth has the strongest magnetosphere of all the rocky planets in our solar system... something to brag about if you ever get abducted by aliens. none of this is really relevant but I figured that it might be a cool useless fact to tuck away in your brains somewhere

- Matt Rock

PS. - If for some god-awful reason you enjoy learning about the magnetosphere and you want a general description of what it is and what makes it tick, go to the following link. But I warn you... it's very technical and might be a bit boring to most people:

Matt - Please go read a book about stars and stop BSing off the top of your head. You aint got a clue it seems. Well you do have a clue, but lots of the details are wrong. And no Im not going to go to the trouble of finding sources to backup what I said because it is so elementary. Thats like me finding a source saying 2+2=4.

And no our sun is NOT currently a white dwarf, we would be in a lot of trouble if it was.

And for the magnetism stuff, well unfortunately I dont know enough about it to tell you you are wrong. (You could be completely correct too)

Watching the discovery channel just makes you aware of those topics, not an expert enough to debate such topics.

I dont mean to be a jerk because I do think you are an intelligent guy who has some idea on these issues. But seriously a lot of your facts are incorrect. I would really suggest not debating almost purely factual things unless you truly are an expert or you have a book in your hand.

Matt, you are full of crap. I agree with billy the kid, go read a book before you start spouting of nonsense.

Magetism has NOTHING to do with gravity

Our sun is NOT a white dwarf

Quote: "The sun won't go boom before the earth ends... it'll fizzle first"

no, it will expand, swallowing up murcury and possible venus, and will scorch our planet. Then it will get smaller and an ice age will occur

no, your like that guy who lives in the park and tries to convince people that the earth is banana shaped.

The earth will be fine though, life will keep on living, be we will kill ourselves (unless we start colonising other planets, but i doubt we will. I would love to be optimistic, but i really really believe its not going to happen)

Actually magnestism may have a lot to do with gravity. However this is still a hotly debated subject in the academic world. No one really knows the cause of gravity. And no, mass is not the cause of gravity. It is just a correlation. We know things with more mass tend to have more gravity, but we dont know why. Einstein's general relativity tried to explain how gravity works, but he isnt completely correct. He came a lot closer than anyone has, but still not completely correct. And I guess there is some evidence that magnestism and gravity are related but no one knows how. There are lots of theories floating around including the one Matt described. Though it could be ridden with errors.

Now if I said anymore than that, I would truly be BSing.

Well first of all, ALL things have a magnetic field even you and me. However it is extremely weak. And there is no answer to your question as far as I know. That is one of the questions they are trying to answer. Gravity really is the longest standing puzzle in physics. Like I said all they really know is that mass is a factor and magnetism MAY be a factor. But they really dont know how mass is a factor and how magnestism is a factor if it is indeed a factor.

And you would think you question would be simple enough to answer, but apparently its not.

i know that every atom has a magnetic field, but the field is only strong when many atoms fields line up, which is what happens with the iron atoms in the earths core, just like the iron that makes up magnets. But what i'm getting at is that Matt is implying that the earths magnetic field is the cause of its gravity, and that is the atoms become unaligned, that the earths gravity would disappear. That, is what i was saying was incorrect

I know what you are saying. And Im saying that is actually a possible explanation scientists are looking into. However it is WAY too early to say it is fact or the way it works. But more than likely Matt got a lot of the details wrong based on his other mistakes. Plus he shouldnt have said it like it was fact because its not. It just one of several theories scientists are researching.

Don't be stupid! They are born with the new strings (due to Elvish genetic manipulation) and the Elves pick the strings up!

Reminds me of a Geldof song
Quote: "Though it strikes you as seeming a little absurd
I'm here to announce the end of the world
It'll happen sometime between now and high noon
It doesn't give you much time as it's happening real soon
It'll start with a whimper, it'll end with a bang
It'll leave a big hole where we could have sang

This is the end
The end of the world
For five thousand years
You must surely have heard
Nostradamus and Jesus and Buddah and me
We said it was coming
Now just wait and see

So everyone outside look up at the sky
It's the last time you'll see it so wave it goodbye
You took it for granted, you thought it was free
Say goodbye to the leaves, the trees, and the sea
There's nothing more useless than a car that won't start
But it's even more useless at the end of the world

This is the end
The end of the world
For five thousand years
You must surely have heard
Nostradamus and Jesus and Buddah and me
We said it was coming
Now just wait and see"

What has that got to do with Elves and staplers?

The world is most definatly not coming to an end. All through human history many people have predicted the end of the world and yet, here we still are.

Personally I'm looking forward to the future, at the new technologies that will come and go and the way civilisation changes []

Wow, it's funny how much crap I got from this thread, especially since I didn't say that the magnetosphere is the only thing that causes gravity. Go back and read my post again (and no, I didn't edit it, it's dated) and you'll see that I said that yes, mass does have something to do with it... but not everything. And FYI, since you apparently haven't reached this page in your high school science book, earth's magnetosphere is the second most powerful magnetic force in our solar system... second only to the sun;s magnetosphere, which reaches as far out as pluto. Read something yourselves before you contest what someone says.

The theory about ions is pretty much the most popular theory right now, and has been since it was discovered in 1999. True, it is a theory, but at work I'm *constantly* re-writing papers on this subject. In terms of volcanoes, I learned all of that from the discovery channel. In terms of astro-physics and geology, I learned all of this in college at Binghamton University.

I admit, I was wrong about the sun being a white dwarf, but I said in that post that I wasn't sure... it is a dwarf, however, and not much bigger.

The sun is a yellow dwarf... hence us living in one of the smallest solar systems we've identified, using HST imaging and terra-based observatories. It's basically what is known as a G2V main sequence star, the largest of the dwarf stars but still a dwarf nevertheless. There are larger stars, there are smaller stars... our sun is sort of in the middle of the road. the coronas on the sun's surface are shooting through the sun's photosphere in a helix form, which is proof that the sun WILL in fact weaken before it gets stronger. We've known this since 1992 and we saw more evidence in 2001 while observing the Jupiter moons Callisto and Ganymede... changes in their orbital balance supported evidence of the sun's dying. Just because your text books in school claimed it doesn't mean it was right, people: Science is an ever-evolving art that changes over time as we learn more about how things work.

Oh, and just to keep anyone from calling me silly names, I went and got evidence to support my claim. I would have done this earlier, but I didn't think people were this under-educated and I'd assumed you would have gone out to do your own research. But hey, you're right, I don't know what I'm talking about... I'm just a college graduate who attended space camp and writes papers on this subject for a living. What would I know.

I tried to get the most simplistic links so you can understand what they're talking about, since apparently certain people haven't read much:
The sun:
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/astronomy/stars/startypes.shtml

The earth's core and rotation (rotation is essential to gravity, lets not forget... I assume you know this, though):
http://www.phy6.org/earthmag/dynamos2.htm

geomagnetism as it relates to other planets with a useful chart if you know how to read it:
http://www.phy6.org/earthmag/mill_8.htm

This final link explains exactly what I said the sun will do... it'll get weak, THEN it will expand (not before we have a very serious ice age though), and then it will die down. It gets weak before it expands... proof is a beautiful thing:
http://www.astronomytoday.com/astronomy/sun.html

Sorry if I sound anal in this post but there's nothing that I hate more than people telling me I'm wrong and full of BS when I know for a fact that I'm right. And no, this stuff isn't elementary... most of the people in here have no clue what we're talking about, hence them not commenting on it. Obviously, neither do the two of you, since this is the sort of stuff you'd learn your first year in college if you take courses that relate to this.
