I have been a member for a few months now, and would like to ask the mods, how long will it be before I can post without approval?
Thanks

It is based on more things than length of time being a member. Mods don't even have the exact numbers, and the best thing to do is wait like the rest of the members do

*shrug*

If it was just time-based, then every Tom, Dick & Harry Spammer would make accounts here, and just leave them for a while.

Come back in a couple of months, and it's unrestricted spam-galore!

No thanks, I much prefer it if it is also based on post-count/content so that we can kick the little bastards out before they pollute the system with their crap

What is the criteria exactly? I'm sure a lot of newbies would like to know. It should be posted when people sign up to the forums... or a FAQ page.

But that would encourage the newcomers to do what they do to simply fulfill the criteria instead of establishing himself as a respectable member, which was why the post-approval thing was made.

It makes me laugh, this is the only forum that does this sort of thing, it encourages spamming coz it stops someone editing a post after they have submitted it, and of course sarcastic Mods with comments like:
Quote: " Have a nice life!"

Always helps, don’t you realize that not only is this forum here to help people, but also to promote TGC products, so driving people away with a shrug of the shoulders is not the best method to keep TGC up and running, or maybe you just don’t care, then shrug away, I for one want to see TGC prosper and keep turning out top notch products like FPSC.

So you don't like FPSC, or dont think it's top notch, top of the pile, out in front of the rest, coz I do, Pro and FPSC are to of the best game creating products out there.

I am leaving the forum as far as posts are concerned, but not checking for updates and help/tutorials etc.
I have been active for some time, but I guess if the mods just dont loke you, the to hell with the money you spent on products, you could be a spammer, how would you know if I cant post?
Thanks Aoneweb for your comments, makes a lot of sense, you shoul be a mod.

I didn't mean to get rid of the post-approval thing... it's a great idea to prevent newbies from going nuts with flamewars or spamming their webpage. I think it's a good idea to let them know where they are on their approval status. Maybe add a tab to the user profile with a list of things that the mods require to be approved.

Like:

[ ] Post your own code that works
[ ] Help 5 people
[ ] Make a small game

Checkmarks could be added by mods when they see that the person does each of these things.

Please explain to me why I should go to the effort of reexplaining something to someone for the umpteenth time when they clearly have no intention of taking anything we say into consideration. Instead, they just reply with threats of 'leaving the community' simply because we have a system in place to protect YOU from the horrible posts filled with hundreds of scat images and dirty pornographic scenes involving but not limited to various farmyard animals. I don't know how many times we have to say this, but we don't get paid, we do this in our spare time, and yet we're still expected to put up with people who complain about things that are clearly explained on various pages and posts around this site!

Give a "Charitable Donation" of ... 1 meallion dollars (laughter) (I know it is spelled million, I am trying to phenetically (sp) quote it).

Just be good. It all depends on what you are posting. Of COURSE you can just post alot, but if you post spam, or flames, (or a mod just assumes that your just spamming because your life is sucked up into a forum). Just be good.

Also, there is the dreaded Noob Slap, who knows how long it might last, but you will have to get mod aproval before your post is shown.

Well said Exeat

Also, I want to clear some things up ( for... I don't know how many times I've done this, but it's too many )...

The approval list has two criteria;
1) Time
2) Post-Count

Now, the ONLY person who knows the numbers of these two things is the Admin ( Rich ). The Mods don't know, the users don't know, the old buddah down the road doesn't know.

The time-limit is considered before the post-count limit is, which means that going post-mad in the first few days to try and get rid of the newb slap wont work.
Conversly, waiting for a month, then going post mad will have the same effect.

When we "Noob Slap" someone, this is an entirely time-based system.
I can say that I've never slapped someone for more than about 5 days, which is nothing in the grand-scheme of things. If you're a complete nerd, and have no life, then you may go crazy and kill yourself, which, quite frankly, would be an improvement to the gene pool.

Finnaly, if you don't like what we do, then go away. ( I want to say some bad, bad words here, but as Benny pointed out, there are younger users on this forum ).

We are NOT paid to do this, I take at least a good 3 or 4 hours of EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK to come here, and moderate the forums, reading posts that I have absolutly no interest in, just to make sure that everything is going smoothly, and there's nothing that needs removing, etc.

If you have a complaint, take it up with the Admin, who is the one appointing the Mod powers.

Quote: "it encourages spamming coz it stops someone editing a post after they have submitted it"

Since when?
There's a BOLD button at the bottom left of every post you make that says "EDIT OWN"... Use it.
It's not hard to miss, and it sure isn't hard to click, so what's so hard about editing your post!?

Quite frankly, I don't like you.

I completely agree - I hate going to forums that are filled with crap that people have spammed onto them. Its a shame such systems have to exist - but one thing I've learn about "the public" is that they're very very thick.

Leave the mods alone, they're doing a spiffing job on this forum and without them, there would be no forum for you to so kindly leave!

I think it was a bit silly of the dude to leave because he got bored of waiting, but there are a few things i would like to idly comment on.

Quite simply because thats what will always need doing and its not going to change. If one user joins, doesnt notice a sticky or doesnt do a thougher search and asks something that has already been asked and answered then so will another user at some other point, from now until the site no longer exists.

Now Exeat you arnt so bad and this is off on a tangent a little, but the thing that annoys me the MOST about this board and many others is an attitude that runs slightly along the same line of thought which results in constant newb bashing and calls of RTFM!!! SEARCH THE FORUMS! and other such temper tantrums repeatedly and on all sorts of topics. I dont really know why people do it other than perhaps to make them seem more mature or "together with it" or whatever? Seems counter productive to me. It should really work thus: if you are tired of replying to a certain question, stop replying. If theres a question already asked and you are going to reply telling them that, inform them nicely they should of searched (it may be the millionth time for you, but for each new user its still their FIRST and they dont deserve your wrath) and link to said post which answers their question.
If you have the patience for it and feel like it then answer their question in full again. The first point is the most important one though - if your frustrated with having to reply to the same thing, STOP REPLYING. Let someone else do it or no one do it. These little outbursts I have noticed on various boards are just throwing fuel onto the fire and projecting a bad image imho.

Again I want to specify that isnt directed at exeat or even any other mod, its at the community as a whole and on all topics.

One thing that bugged me for example was the call to stop model requests in the 3d forum even though it was somewhat understandable. But the post basically amounted to "*I* dont like seeing model requests" regardless of what other users minded. Things like that become a problem because of the way they are handled - if someone makes a bloody stupid request then why does everyone jump on the flame wagon? A simple case of natural selection as it were would solve the problem if stupid posts were ignored - they would soon drop to the bottom of the board. But everyone just LOVES to top them again with their little complaint about it and then all the posts end up at the top and its now officially a problem and a ban on them all needs to be called. *shakes head* it bugs me. The several "need a model done?" threads that have been coming and going over the past months are proof some people dont mind and if someone requests something stupid in those threads they are being told no and ignored.

Anyway, onwards...

Regardless of what I think of what you said and wether anything was right and wrong etc etc (for the record, I agree with everything par this paragraph) I would like to put this paragraph in the spotlight for a moment and call it irrelevent.

Its not a personal attack, but seeing things like this from mods truely does bother me alot. You knew what you signed up for, the fact you do it for free grants you no special rights - only appreiciation (which i whole heartedly give). Again my reply to this is simular to the posts thing - if you dont like doing it then stop. This is part of being a mod, seriously if you cant deal then take a break from it all - if you can deal then please dont bring it up as a sympathy or excuse card. If all the mods start doing that we're in trouble. It should not be used as an argumentitive point, it really shouldnt :/

I hope no one takes offence, this is not a personal attack on anyone. I can understand the position of the mods especially due to 4 years of forum administration myself (second in command admin, not mod.) and I know its sometimes frustrating to see the same questions and the fact you do it all for free etc etc. But that was what I agree'd to when I volenteered for the position and I had to treat each new user with the same respect as the first day I started and the first time I answered a question. The day that become hard was the day I started my break which I am currently enjoying.

Something to keep in mind at least I think.

Oh, it's not that I can't cope with it, I can, and I don't want to use it as a sympathy or excuse card for anything.
The reason I said this was that someone was complaining about the Mods, and how we do not-to-par jobs, and I wanted them to know the effort I put in as a volunteer, and that I do infact do a good job ( I think so, anyway ).

If anyone else wants to be a MOD, that's nice, but you do have to be commited, as Sephnroth kindly pointed out

I suppose its a matter of those people who have never done anything like this just take it for granted, and assume that they know what goes on behind the scenes, and as such think that what does go on isn't enough. Then said person(s) complain without any actual information to back them up, or any experience to speak of.

Sephnroth, you would know ( given your position as an Admin ), and as such, you wouldn't complain about these things, as you know we are doing what every other MOD on the internet does - His/Her job.

So... Yeah

And,

The difference here is that the question had already been answered politely by Jeku, NestEgg was simply trying to give us some kind of 'guilt trip' by saying he was leaving. Hence, my reply.

Agreed, some people expect full and the utmost dedication from mods and believe we should be on here all hours of the day, helping everyone when really that's not realistic for any of us.

Quote: "Becouse your a mod, and I need help, and if it irritates you, it may be time to throw in the towel."

I'm just going to pull out a technicality here and point out that it's NOT a mod's job to help new users and answer questions. That is simply us being kind enough to offer assistance. We're only really here to enforce the rules set out in the AUP.

Sorry if I'm wrong or if there's something I don't understand (I've been not very active here since 3/4 months) but ,NestEgg can't you post (and edit ) things here? Or do your post appear long time after you've typed it? If it's that, I think that 3 months of 'good' posting is enough. (it's just my feeling...)

FGUI,
We have a system in place called the "Newb Filter".

Any new forum member is automatically put on this filter, so whenever they make a post, only the MOD's can see it.

This way, if a spammer signs up, and spams with pornography, or other parafinalia, then we can delete it, and ban them without the community ever having to put up with the spam.

If a normal user signs up, and they post happily enough, and are good little netizens, then we Approve their post, and it's viewable by the general public

We also have what's called the "Newb Slap", where an existing member who is no longer part of the filter can be "Slapped" and put back on to the filter for an amount of time, so that we can monitor if they are still being bad.

It's a very, very effective system, and a very good way to keep spam out of the forum

Jess.

hmm... spamming...

You know, I can post 50 messages on this board (as of now) all spam, before I get banned, and the messages take TIME to delete. Mods = people, not machienes... they do have faults. and they take TIME to read all new posts.

How can you say it 'usually means' something, if this is the only forum you've seen it on? Plus, that sentence makes no sense, if he's too lazy to add security features, then how come he'd go to the effort to setup a post monitoring system?

Quote: "Plus I mean, isn't it the mod's job to clean up the forums, not the users?"

How exactly are the users cleaning up the forum with this system? We're the ones monitoring the posts, you guys aren't doing anything. In fact, this is even less work for you because in the past users would often email us if they saw something that needed cleaning up. Now, they don't have to deal with it at all.

Quote: "ohnoes! someone named viagrabuynow posted some spam! What will we do for the 36 seconds til' it is removed from the forums!? OMGAAAH IT BURns etc etc.."

There are young users on here and we'd prefer it if they weren't scarred for life when they see hundreds of horrible images of naked people consuming other human feces. It's not pretty and it's in our best interest to keep that stuff from every coming to public eye.

Is this still going on? - this thread I mean!.

FFS newbs, these practices were put in place to combat spam - there's been instances in the past where people have posted grotesque images that I certainly don't want to see again. Learn to live with it and stop freakin complaining about a system put in place to protect kids from porn because you clearly don't understand.

How do you know they don't access the TGC site via a gateway?

All 400 of our PC's at school get given the same IP address on the net since they access via a gateway; these two guys (although unlikely) could be in the same school or even household.

I reckon you should check it out before slapping

Good eye, indi That's funny, especially since newegg said that aoenweb should be a mod. Hehehe.

Now you have.
See, you truly do experience something new every day.

Quote: "IMO it is unneccesary and usually means the admin is too lazy to add in any other security features."

Or it could mean most of the forums you visit use the method of: "let someone destroy the place with page after page of vile spammed images, and then some poor mod has to go through and clean the whole lot up, usual several hours after rafts of people have already complained about what just appeared in their browser."

Frankly, that doesn't show like they care very much for their forum users to me. It also has nothing to do with security at all, go run a phpbb site - then you'll know about security problems.

The time limit for noob posts is LOW, we're not even talking a week here. The post count is low too. But it has worked perfectly since implementation, capturing the crap at the door and kicking it out before anyone else got to see it.

A far nicer way to run a forum.

The idea is not new either, several mailing lists I am on are FULLY moderated - every single last message is approved before appearing. If we did that, well, then you'd have something valid to bitch about.

A great many people think they are thinking when they are really rearranging their prejudices.

I find it VERY unlikely that Aoenweb is NestEgg, unless he likes declining an "oppertunity of advancement" then insults himself... but there is the fact that only 3 min later did he reply to NestEgg...

Just let me say for the record, NestEgg is a friend of mine, formally a colleague, I introduced him to TGC, and FPSC, sometimes he uses my wireless network, and my laptop to post, but I can assure you he has his own ISP, and has posted from there, you should check that out, before making accusations, I would also point out that NestEgg is working in New Mexico right now, and will be back in Tucson on Sunday, I will have him post here from his own connection upon his return to clear things up.
You may of noticed his remark about me becoming a Mod, this was a joke for me, and my reply asking if he had been drinking was also a joke, as he is partial to a beer or two, hope this clears things up, as I have never been a big fan of conspiracy theories.
Thanks kiddies.

Or am I a schizophrenic? ……………..who said that?
