Well, I would have a thought a bit of common sense would have resulted in a correct answer.

Failing that, why do you see (on the back of games and whatnot), something along the lines of "CPU Type and Speed : Pentium xxx 1.2Ghz or equivalent"

Well, on the back of games they may say Pentium whatever and 1.2Ghz or equivalent, but on the darkbasic homepage, this is what the system requirements for the darksdk say:

"300 MHz Pentium II Processor"

There was "equivalent" word there, so since on the back of games or on other game engine websites they actually would say "or equivalent" and since AMD and Pentium are different processors, I was just making sure that the darkSDK wasn't just created for the Pentium processor.

Anyways, Sephnroth, thanks for the kind answer. Those other three were quite rude and yet they're moderators; makes newbies feel so unwelcome to the darkbasic community.

they're both x86 processors.

Sincerest Apologies, was not meaning to be rude, although it was funny at the time.

Most of the time it is marketing mumbo jumbo when they refer to Pentiums XXX ghz on back of boxes. As well as fancy instruction sets etc...

You wont have a problem.

Most of the time is not always, and equivalent is not equal...
For example, Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 does not run on older Athlon processors (such as the Thunderbird in my computer) because they lack a specific instruction set (SSE). However, Adobe's "system requirements" are not so clear:

Quote: "
System requirements

Intel® Pentium® III 800MHz processor (Pentium 4 3GHz recommended)
Microsoft® Windows XP
256MB of RAM (1GB or more recommended)
etc.."

Only deep in the "Adobe Support knowledge base" you can find:

[quote]
Error "...application failed to initialize...(0xc000001d)..." occurs during startup (Premiere Pro 1.5)

Issue

When you try to start Adobe Premiere Pro, it returns the error "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000001d). Click on OK to terminate the application."

Solutions

Do one or more of the following solutions:

Solution 1: Check the system requirements.

Make sure that you install Adobe Premiere Pro on a computer that meets the minimum system requirements (that is, an Intel Pentium III 800 MHz or later processor). For a list of system requirements, see the Adobe website at www.adobe.com/products/premiere/systemreqs.html.

[...]

Background information

Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 requires the SSE instruction set for real-time previews. The SSE instruction set is included with Intel Pentium III and later processors, and with AMD Athlon XP and later processors.

Software which will not run on a machine with an AMD processor is extremely rare because as said earlier both Intel and AMD use a very similar architecture which at kernel level is 100% compatible.

They vary in things like instruction extensions and 3D support - for example, AMD Athlon's have 3D-Now built in but Intel doesn't.

However, like Adobe the software has to be specially written to take advantage of these differences - something most software writers don't do as it rules out many potential customers.

The core of all i86-based processors is the same though and provided they will run Windows, are all compatible with each other.
