well if you are after a free one, the gcc compiler is good and you can get an okay ide for free for it from [href]http:/www.bloodshed.net[/href]

if you want to use vc++ then you can download the free compiler of it, it is just missing some parts of it (mfc is one of them)

if you want to get the visual studio ide, then you are going to have to purchase visual c++ off m$, the latest version is visual c++.net 2005, but you could always get visual c++.net 2003(which is what i use). In my opinion it is best to steer away for visual c++ 6 as it does not comply with some standards

i can't remember the link but it is called something like visual c++ .net 2003 toolkit, so do a search on msdn

if you are begining programming i would not recommend using the free toolkit as you don't get the ide(the thing you program in) so it might be a better idea buying it from amazon

If I understand correctly, some compilers use a certain set of dlls to compile from. Some compilers like VC++2003Pro use compilers that are capable of compiling code of MFC, ATL, and other variations, whereas some compilers may not be able to do this.

You cant get a free version of VS6. You could get it cheap (maybe) on eBay.

Then again, buying it second hand used may break the license rules. I think it depends on what version you buy, since some of the versions ain't allowed to be reselled.

I doubt the legailities of buying a second-hand copy will be worth worring over. Besides, its no longer supported...

It would be better to get 2003 though - for the time being at least.

I was going to get VC2003 but like I said it won't work on my operating system, I'd have to get a new computer.I'm using VC6.0 Introductory Edition, but I always get a warning note about how I can't send or sell it to anyone when I run an EXE (Which is gettin freakin annoying).
well thanks for the help
