@ Rick & Rich,

Without drawing you too much on this product, how easy will it be for duffers like me to use this engine with biped objects, water etc - had a go with Newton but was v difficult to get ragdoll and gave up...

If it's anything like the now-deceased beta product, there will be commands such as MAKE RAGDOLL, MAKE VEHICLE and MAKE 4X4VEHICLE. Let's hope they are taking a similar approach.

@ Batvink,

Here's hoping it's as good as that beta.... could you expand upon those beta commands to give us a better idea of the sorts of things a package like this is likely to be could do (if you see what I mean!)

Sure it is, because their ice cubes are sitting in the freezer!

Sounds like it will be great. I have been using ODE, and this sounds worlds better. Can hardly wait!

Yes, yes it is! I am so happy, I got the bulletin yesterday which was my birthday, am going to have to use some of my birthday money to buy this. I can't wait, I'm going to be using this on my current project, a fps game engine which will be complete with level editor. I am going to be handing in the engine as my senior project for high school when my teacher sees the Physics I know he will have know choice but to pass me.

Er. But despite being a physics plugin, you don't actually *do* anything except feed it some values about velocity and mass. If I was your physics teacher I'd fail you for using somebody else's work.

Its interesting to see what the "community" at Blitz is saying about it (apart from the idiot that says Lee cant make DBPro stable)...

From the Blitz caves:
Quote: "I personally, would choose Dbpro over blitz if I needed physics in my games. I mean - I get physics AND shaders... it's mind blowing."

Quote: "Lots of nice things coming to DBPro, those guys really know how to embrace technology. "

Quote: "Those guys know about marketing, networking and what their target audience want, and how to go about getting it. Probably have a dedicated marketing guy/team to cover areas that BRL are particularly weak at. "

It's official, DB rocks. And the bugs fixed, it's amazing.

If I extrapolate from the updating rate of DarkGDK, this seems to mean never, doesn't it ? Physics was supposed to come with the "next" DarkSDK update (in preparation since almost a year, with still no known release date today)...

You can download the Ageia physics sdk from their site. It might take a bit of work to wrap it into the dgsdk, but I'm sure if you're already using C++, it wouldn't be that difficult - especially as the Ageia sdk comes with a ton of samples and example code!
You do need to register with them though, and I'm not sure if they let just anyone register. - Got to be worth a try though!

Just to chime in on this thread and share my brain patterns with you all, I did some PPU quick-tests for software/hardware comparison and after many crueling C++ hours of puzzled expressions, I managed to get the speed I was looking for. In one of my tests, I produced 1000 crates from the sky which fell into a nice pile costing me 15fps off the CPU. I changed a single value, and the hardware kicked it to take over the job and restored the very same application to double-VSYNC of 30fps. Without optimization, I consider this a big browny point for the PPU. At first I was dubious anything could beat my FX-57, until you realise that ANY work you can offload from your CPU gives you more cycles to play with, and I have yet to clock the speed of spheres and particles which by all reports are meltingly OTT!

Looking forward to May.

After playing Half-Life 2 and now becoming increasingly obsessed with Oblivion (if you haven't played Oblivion yet, do so right now!) I can happily cast that physics is indeed the new buzz.

Edit: I just found this and I laughed myself silly mad bowman

Oblivion is awesome, taking up all of my free time at moment.

Looking forward to this new physics add, i for one will more then likely get it.

May even get a work in progress up for you guys much later on in the year (if i get it to a state im happy with).

To try this, I've got to be nuts!!!

If this product is anything as sgood as the beta version of Meqon I tested, it'll be wonderful.

However I'l surprised and dissapointed to find it won't be in DarkSDK for the near future. DSDK seems to look like an afterthought now

@Duffer - you really can't address Lee directly and expect an answer, he is WAY TOO BUSY most of the time, but stops by from time to time when he can.
So it's best not to act impatient with Lee, he doesn't deserve it.

This is what gets me, you don't need the hardware for the software to work but from what I gather the grpahics cards only take care of the rendering and textures and takes most of those duties away from the CPU leaving the rest of the game instructions on the CPU so surely that adds a lot more burden even with the AGEIA PhysX sotfware intstalled .

They have a monopoly here and a license to print money with the physics chip because I can't see ATI and Nvidia being left out
Still it would be nice to have that though it lefts just the A.I and plyer routines for the Main chip to handle.

@vampyre - sounds like you understand some of it, but you're a little confused maybe. You are talking about the PhysX hardware and software, then you gather that the graphics card.....
The PhysX hardware card has no graphics capability on board.

1) Graphics card (GPU) - will do all the 2D & 3D rendering, video display work, just like it does already. Taking the rendering load off of the CPU.

2) PhysX Hardware Card (PPU) - will handle all of the physics routines that you ask it to do in your programs, just like the PhysX software will do, only MUCH!!! faster. Taking the physics calulation load off the CPU. The PhysX software, without the PhysX hardware called being used, will still use the CPU though.

3) CPU - left to do all the other stuff, like run program code, AI, etc. Basically everything else that the GPU and PPU won't do.

Keeping them seperate in your head will help when talking about them.

I'm suspicious about the future success of the hardware.

Traditionally, hardware with dedicated physical inputs and outputs seem to be successful. Sounds cards, video cards, etc.

Cards the assist with processing tend to fail. Anyone remember those MPEG movie cards? They seemed to be the next big thing, and people bought them, but they're long dead. Now, CPUs can easily handle the load of the 2D video.

The PhysX card is similar, in that it will only assist the CPU and not output anything. More powerful CPUs will just take over. Once you've added the processing power of the new card to an existing CPU, there's really no need for it. Then, it's just the software...

@BillR No Bill I saw in this thread that you don't need the hardware
but there mght be a way to make sure that the main cpu gets overloaded somehow by the software forcing companies and individuals to get the hardware, I might be wrong as chips are a ,lot more pwerful now and companies are using dual core chips so the loading might be negliable but I might be wrong about that .
If you don't get the hareware and just get the software you are going to need a powerful main chip though I think
