hi

I was watching a documentry the other day about these people who made a cg film (like how pixar does it) it shows them modelling the characters out of clay and then scanning them into the computer ready to be rigged.

This looks like a really fast and quick way to make good 3d character model's.

But does anybody know how much ne of those scanning devices costs and where I can find one.

Thanks

thats what they're doing in a new Ardman movie (with the rats in it) and did it for the rabbits in the latest wallace and gromit, however i would suspect these are really expensive, assuming in the thousands

Not only is it really expensive, but the polygon counts are likeley ridiculously high too.

yea, the companys usually get them custom built i would assume... they probably cost $10-30 thousand dollars i would assume. The polycounts are ridiculously high which is why they are "rigged" already... When you have 30k polys or more on a model you probably wont see any stretching if you use the right type of animation. But I think if you really want to use one of those machines you should get a job with one of the companys that uses them. ie Pixar ect.

oddmind: there's nothing wrong with stretching during animation, so long as the right parts are stretching

You might want to check out other 3d apps, as the tools work differently which each app. ZBrush might suit you better since you work with clay.
Instead of a 3d scanner, you could also go the cheaper but more work route with something like http://www.photomodeler.com/ or Realviz Image modeler http://www.realviz.com. You can create your models in clay, photograph them at different angles and suck them into either app and layout those polys.

You might also want to check around your area for studios or graphics bureaus as some do provide 3d scanning services.
