For those of you curious about the capabilities of Blender as software for cinematic purposes, or just still renders, the open source movie Elephant's Dream has just been released for download to the public, along with all of its production files. This movie was made completely with open source software(meaning free), and Blender was the modeller, animator, and renderer used. This also means that a significant update, 2.42, will be on the way soon with all the features added to make the movie.

I haven't finished downloading yet, so I can't post any comments on the movie, but from the screens ive seen it looks quite amazing.

And the great thing is, we're free to edit the movie as we see fit. Great stuff.

But I'd only end up making it worse.

Here's to the crazy ones.

Lol yes that is great. I just watched the movie, it was shorter than I expected, but the quality was amazing. I never would have guessed that it wasn't made by Pixar with studio tools. Definately worth the long download.

yeah its fairly short hey...six minutes or something in total. The voices are a little annoying, but the visuals are amazing. I LOVE the typewriter-steps scene where those wierd plates from a bridge where they walk...great stuff.

Ah yes i loved that scene as well, i thought the story was fairly interesting as well. Definately pretty abstract.

yer, really abstract. I have some ideas about it though. Obviously, Emo doesnt love being inside the machine, and 'cant appreciate' the beauty of it as Proog says. But apart from that, its all very vauge.

Some excellent visuals though, world class. Absolutely brilliant.

We should make a kickass movie oooga

It has a nice look to it - kinda reminds me of that abstract animation style that Tool and NiN use often. Tool have this awesome traditional animated video, but it is good to see this style hasn't died yet.

Considering it's made in Blender, well that's just incredible - so many people will get into this stuff because of that little movie.

Would'nt a movie maker system that wasn't quite as difficult be awesome, like even using game models - I just think it's a shame that animation is still so hard to get into, compared to how easy it was to get into stop motion stuff. I remember making an errupting volcano movie with little pipecleaner cavemen being scorched, this was in primary school. Hobbyist movie making could be so much easier, maybe Ele's Dream will encourage someone to make 'The Movies' properly.

we could call it "Ooga and Greenligs Dream" and it would involve awesome visuals, and an insanely subtle story about......rice farmers....

I think wiggett has influenced me...

Lmao, there has to be a random appearance of a ninja, and possibly some monkeys as well.

A ninja adaption of suzanne perhaps..

It's really amazing to think of the time it took to create those 6 minutes of animation, almost a year.

yeah, i thoguht it would be longer too. Well spent time though. I imagine they could fit more in second time round though.

Ninja suzanne...would be an interesting mix. What would the story be though? Suzanne owns some dudes in a rice paddy? I dunno....

By long download do you mean the 680 hours 40 minutes and 24 seconds it takes to download it?

Did someone choose USA #1 by chance? Threatened a similar time for me, but got it from france in 17 minutes...

All I gotta do now is find which MPEG-4 codec it wants - 3 different ones haven't worked now... It is MPEG-4, isn't it?

I just spent 1 hour and 45 minutes downloading this movie, and WMP11 couldn't play the file...

DANG IT!

And for some reason I didn't even download it to my desktop...

Must say that this is quite a fantastic film! It definitly competes with the big boys, and may well be considered one of the big players in the 3D market now. Plus, I just love the whole idea of the film.

The actual download of a torrent file shouldn't take any time at all, the actual download comes when you open the torrent file and let BitTorrent begin downloading for you. Obviously you have to have BitTorrent or a similar program installed first.

It work awesome, however the one I downloaded didn't have the voices kept up with the lip movements, perhaps its due to my damn computer
