@Insanity, take a look at these hand shots..

notice the tendons running up the hand in the high version and the overall smoothness vs the low version...

People use a variety of tools to do it, I myself use a combination of Hexagon 2 and Cinema 4D CE 6, my model on the front page was made in Hexagon 2, there are free applications that do the job, like Blender, Anim8or and Wings3D which seemed to be favourites, I would start with a free applications, I would recommend blender, although it is one of the hardest apps to get the grips with out there, but it contains a lot of power that will benefit you once you have got your head around how blender works.

How we do it? It takes learning tutorials and a lot of practice I am afraid, I've been 3D modelling for over a year, but I have had many interruptions to do with education, I'm sure people can get to the same quality faster than I have. When learning start off with simple stuff, dragons are one of the hardest organic being you can model well.

I don't want to turn this into yet another blender love or hate thread, but if you're new to modelling, I highly recommend blender because the only reason for its difficulty is because it's different from all of the other products. I've been modelling since christmas, and I've tried all other free modelers and milkshape, and Wings is the only other one I liked.

Blender has compatibility issues with DB, but it's constantly being updated, so a new .x exporter is probably not too far away, especially with its growing popularity.

Most modellers have demos on their official websites (normally full products, but time out after a month or something). Look around and find what's right for you.

On a side note, I finally got some claws that I'm happy with. Now for the feet, tail, and texturing...

Well it won't turn into a blender love hate thread, anyone who starts coming along to say how we're stupid for mentioning blender would be being stupid, because we are recommending blender, but to be honest for ease wings and Anim8or are the better choice. Plus lets keep on topic, we answered his question

Kewl, feet annoy me, but at least you're nearly finished the modelling part (I still need to work on my torso and wings)

I have to be the most inconsistent modeller ever. I tend to interchange between low and high poly several times in one model. Still not 100% happy with the claws and feet, but they'll have to do. I'll come back to them if I have time.

Haha, sorry that one cracked me up xD

I only started about half an hour ago, havent been getting into it all that much but here's what I've got so far;

Im not going for the stereotypical dragon, this ones gona have something to do with underwater (hence the fins), but it'll have some sort of a wing set. I havent decided on the design but Im thinking the wings will have the look of seal skin, kind of rubbery. Ofcourse thats not textured just the vert colours.

More to come.

Everyone doing great

@Ruccus love the watertype dragon, at last a variation to the normal 2winged green dragons.

@Ooga Booga i knew you where to come with some mechanical dragon. Looking good.

@Crazy Ninja nice. I'm also at a humanoid type of dragon, but i doubt i'll be entering it in the contest.

id like to make a recreation of a book cover relating to a dragon.
its has just a dragons eye and the name of the book not a whole dragon. will this be acceptable for this compo?

Of course you won't I'm afraid to avoid unfairness, the rules have been made from the start that winners cannot enter their contest (because one possibility is that it could mean they could choose something they are really good at, or some way they can twist the contest to give a higher chance of them re-winning)

Well really you can make an entry, but you're not allowed to enter it as a final.

And well no more exams until 8th June, so I'm back in the contest to work on my Bahamut

@Musashi thats somewhat what i was trying to say, but again, i can't express myself clearly. Also, thats one of the reasons i decided for a dragon contest, as im modeling a lot of them, and would like to see how others work their ways out on the subject.

Well here is my update, I did a test displacement map for fun, but I will not use them for the entry, I tried UV Mapping it in Hexagon, but no success, I think I'll export it for Lithunwrap.

[edit]

@Lil gamz that looks nice, but the texture doesn't look too happy

instead of doing something productive like a real overhaul on texturing or animation I felt like finally learning how to do some particle effects...

Made a few little tweaks based on Jonny's critique.

Due to revision and stuff, progress has been slow, but I've finished the modelling 95% (just need to round off the tail). Now all I need to do is finish the materials/textures and put it into a finl position for the final render.

I've never used the particle system in blender before. It's harder than I thought it would be.

It takes time to compose the effect you want, its annoying, but hopefully speed comes with time

BenD I'm a bastard, why would you expect me to be fair eh?

Nah, kidding, well I do allow for laties up to 24 hours after the contest is closed, I usually close contests around midday (UK time of course), or as close as possible, I am not always able to predict day plans for that day, so I never make time promises (unless I am certian enough), only day ones.
