Please only post works in progresses.

Well, as Zergei had a hesitation at the beginning, I thought I would get started on a dragon, I chose the Final Fantasy 9 version of Bahamut, the King of Dragons, so far 2400 polies. Hopefully I will get a decent texture on him, but no promises;

Heres a very early WIP on the head, with just place-holder materials. I'm going for a sort of cyborg look.

Here's an extremely early WIP. It's a bit square at the moment, but I have the basic shape. The body isn't in the shot because its just an extruded cube at the moment.

Here's my work in progress. Unfinished head, tail, feet, and wings. Polycount just under 600. Good chance I'll be able to toss this model into Hexagon(2) to play around with.

Another update, just getting the basic shape ready before adding details. I think I may chop off a leg and make it mechanical.

Entries lookin good. Mike you're gettin better with using Wings , but just an idea;

Currently (I may be wrong), it looks like your dragon model's wings' vertex connections a little strange. I know Wings tends to render strange shadows with simple verts even when in other modelers its fine, but it looks like this is the vert connection setup for your wing right now;

Though a setup like this might bear better results (and would make it a lot easier to rig the wings for the dragon as well);

Just an idea, though I might be wrong altogether aout how the verts are set up anyways

Thanks Ruccus, I am a big time wings3d fan. It seems like I discover something new with it everyday. For example, today I found that you can switch the camera modes to match your favorite 3D application(Maya,Max,Mirai, etc.) How cool!

Yes, you are indeed correct about how the vertices are setup. Here's a wireframe so you can better analyze the model. Rigging this model will certainly be a challenge, but Truespace+MagicBones will certainly give me enough flexibility to tackle this beast.

Hmm... Thats strange, wings shouldnt be giving you those irregular shadows. Try performing a cleanup on the entire dragon, if the dragon still looks the same then I guess its just the angle.

Still good progress, looks like you dont have any unneeded verts so far.

Wow, very nice work going on here.

Not much of an update-just extruded some wings. I'll work on them tomorrow. I'm very happy to say that my friend gave me permission to use, and post, his concept art that he drew ages ago. So I'm basing my dragon on his pic:

Here's what I have so far:

Thanks Jonny, and an extra thanks for the drawover. I'll keep tweaking the model with that drawover in mind. Should be the difference between a good and great model.

@Ooga:
I liked it better with normal foot...that's not to say you didn't pull off the style well, you did a great job with it. I just liked the normal foot/leg better...
Anyway, it looks great...

I'm almost scared to post my WIP, but I will anyway when I get home tonight.

Ugh....Always gets so demoralising when you get to the claws...

I've no idea why the creases are there at the bottom of the wing. I placed the vertices manually. It's completely flat (I set the X value the same to 3 dp).

They're going to be moved later anyway, so it's not too important yet.

@Ooga Booga: I love your idea of going with a mechanical dragon. Wouldn't like to be the things surgeon though.

it looks like some of the polygons there are triangles and the same for around the claws, to most 3D modellers using triangles can be your worst nightmare as the crease and make the geometry look ugly, so where possible avoid them, keep to four sided polygons is my recommendation. (I know game models need to be in triangles, but you can use triangulate )

Yeah, I try to keep to quads, but it can be quite hard sometimes. I know the problem now, and it will be fixed when I move the wings into position for the final render. It's actually not a triangle, just some dodgy angles around a vertex. They're only like that for convenience whilst I'm modelling it.

The triangles around the claws are there because I had to sub divide to make them. I hadn't thought it through beforehand. I can fix that though, once I have the basic shape. I'm a perfectionist, which means I won't rest untill I'm happy with it. It also means that any model takes ages to finish.

Kewl, as long it works out in the end for the model, whatever approach you like and works is fine, I am like that when it comes to mistakes or problems, I will usually leave them until the end, so I have all my problems there and then to straighten them out

@City of Chaos, Im pretty sure you're not allowed to submit that model as you began working it before the contest began. One of the rules says you cant do this, so you'll have to start over.

@City of Chaos I am afraid RUCCUS is right, you may only use work that has been made within the time of the contest initiation, and soon will have to have been made specifically for the contest, I am afraid I cannot accept that as an entry
