alright the 72 hour programming compo is over and this was our entry

If your computer can't open the exe it's most likely because your graphics card can't open up a 400 by 300 screen res. It's much too small for newer graphics cards. Just try downloading it on an computer with an older card and it should run fine. I'll try to get a 800 by 600 version for you guys, but no promises. (it will still look like 400 by 300 with all graphics zoomed x2)

screens:

Download:
www.spriteart.com/indigo/RetroRacers.zip

about the game:
the game was entirely made with Play BASIC. we only had time to make 2 levels, but that should be plenty enough gameplay for you guys. It's a bit hard to pick up, but once you do, it's a ton of fun to play. Just remember that the game uses directional steering (pressing the left button makes the sprite go directly left) as opposed to angle steering, and you can press more than one arrow at a time to go at an angle. The game was based around the concept of Galaxy5000 for the NES. You can download the original from www.vimm.net.

the learning curve is a bit tight, but if you stick with it the game gets easier and more fun.

who made it:
BugBoy: Programming

Indigo(me): Art, and Additional Programming
www.Indigo.SpriteArt.com

Martin Mayer: Music and SFX
www.multimediacomposer.co.uk

20 bonus points to be the first one to beat the game! Go!

have fun
-Dan

EDIT: Just so you guys know, hand-pixeling a 16 directional isometric craft is a PAIN! dont EVER do it!

Hehe, a very enjoyable game! But I only got to beat level 1 because that I experienced a wierd bug... First time it happened was when I lost level 1 and the "Game Over" screen showed. I got to the main menu again, and started the race again. But here, I got a windows crash. You know, one of those crashes were you can decide whenever to send the error report or not. This error came again second time when I was playing level 2

Very cool!
The control is hard at first but i got used to it (even if i played just one time and was 4th).
I had the same bug as The Nerd, expect there was no Windows-Error message.
I'm sure, I'm going to play it often later.

Awesome

Its not really hard to pick-up, as long as you dont forget that pressing left means going left, not turning left.

fix motor sound problem:
-start off with higher pitch motor sound at 22000
-fix sound to co-ordinate with the speed of the craft, and not the buttons being pressed down
-loop low-rumble at all times (idle motor sound)?
-add more music (only if new graphic sets are created)

CODING:

fix all bugs:
-user lib not found
-crashes after lvl 1
-crashes after lose/win upon replaying
-not loading at all
-splash screen with different video mode options 400,300 or 800,600
-fix screen fade maybe

things to add:
-add options button in menu:
-alpha/beta controls
-video mode
-(using the esc key)pause menu including:
-resume game
-end race
-restart race
-exit to menu
-level selection screen
-select level using unlockables method
-add a practice level with no racers and no laps
-shadow under cars using alpha transparency
-car selection screen

GRAPHICS:

things to fix:
-tile errors and lvl flaws
-car variences
-3..2..1...go needs re-working
-1st, 2nd, etc could be CG

things to add:
-more vegitation
-more graphic sets? (requiring more artists?)
-pause menu graphics
-mini iso tiles for lvl selection screen
-car selection screen gfx
"

beta controls will be the standard pressing left rotates the car to the left and forward is the gas. that seems to be the number 1 gripe; the controls.

Wow! This is the second forum I've seen this mentioned on today, I must visit a lot of indie gaming sites huh? Someone linked me to a topic all about making the sprites for this game on another forum, now I just HAVE to download it. ^_^

I'll try to remember to ASAP, once I'm on my own PC again.
