OK, after having a big long argument with Jon Fletcher, cheesygood and Butyouman, I thought I'd put my money where my mouth was and try to make one (without particle effects.)
I tried 3 different techniques and this was the only one that worked (propperly)

Method one.

I tried making animated particle flames in Maya, that spawned at the end of the gun. It looked wicked (like proper particle flames), except to get it into FPSC I had to convert the flame particles to geometry, and then it was like 200000 polys. Reducing the polys of the particles made the flames look pants. Scrapped

Method two

Making the flame part of the mesh. This looked ok, but because the flame could not bend independently of the gun (when you flame and turn left and right), as soon as you turned while shooting, you could tell the flames were just a big blob of geometry stuck to the gun.

Method three.

Using a new smoke decal to represent the flames. I think this is the future of the flamer. My version is flawed, as the flames and muzzle flash need improvement. The gun is just something quick. I know I could model a good flamer if I had time, this is more about the actual useability. And it looks alright. Download it and have a play.

I realise there have been quite a few problems with pirated media. I would therefore like to state that the mesh for this weapon is entirely mine, BUT, this weapon does contain some media already contained in FPSC, it is therefore only for use with a registered copy of FPSC. A full licence (detailing the ownership of all media) is included in the zip. please read this as it also contains installation instructions.

enjoy. Butters

Nice torch there. IMO, cooler than the method I experimented with using flak... it was mayhem on a stick and utterly craptastic (though kinda fun).

Cheers Errant. Ah you tried the kebab technique, similar to your laser?

I tried that one too, and actually I think if you combined your kebab technique with this one, synchronising the movement of the kebab of alpha flames, with the smoke bone, it'd probably look ok.

Too long to do for something that wont damage things propperly anyway.

and hey, like 30 views? 1 comment?

sorry, the sound REALLY sucks. just make the fireloop in the gunspec slightly longer, and if its only for personal use, try cutting a tiny slowed down section out of the explosion Sound effect. might be ok

I never tested against an enemy either, so the range might be a bit long!!

Thanks for the comment tho s4, I'm in xgen at the moment workin on a better muzzulio flasherado.

Nice looking flamethrower.
I'll have to try this out later.
For the record,I tried method two...adding the flames to the models...and had major issues.
Good job on this.

Different method than the laser. I created huge flaming balls as custom flak projectiles but although they flowed from the gun nicely, they still looked cheap (actually, terrible because of no self-illumination)and had a bad habit of chain-reacting and hurting the user lol

Like you stated in the other thread, lack of good firey deaths is a key issue here. I think the effect you came up would be perfect for a HUD weapon like an aerosol can and a lighter rather vs. a heavy-duty-looking flamer. That goes for pretty much all game-made flame throwers though IMO. They all tend to act like glorified blowtorches and nothing like a real flamethrower. Postal2 might have been the closest function-wise.

Lol, no problem people, it's all part of the FPSC learning experience, I hope this has opened peoples eyes to new ways of using the weapons smoke decal. I'm thinking of making a scifi gun that ommits blue static...

Quote: "like an aerosol can and a lighter"

lol, interesting you should say that, I made a zippo and aerosol a while ago, and after I posted the flamer, I dug it out and tweaked it so it works in the same way, and it looks wicked!!

Here's a screen of the original model (attached)

When you unzip the folder there is a text document inside of it that says "Read this or fail".
I am assuming that you didn't read it and you failed.
Read that text document and you should have the flamethrower working in no time.

Uh not to brag or go off topic, but I posted a thread like this a while ago; type in muzzleflash in search this should find it, but thats what I use just for normal muzzleflashes. Smoke doesn't rotate and by only using one frame in the decal and making smoke decals such as smoke 1,2,3 ect you can make better flashes check it out...

I know my monitor broke and when i got a new one I have been to busy with college and my game to be much of a voice on the forums. I will start a thread and give my flashes away to the community tommorow along with the flamethrower if anyone wants it, it isn't animated. Anyhow I do not wish to hijack or disturb butterfingers thread in anyway with this I was just trying to get my ideas and thoughts out to the community.

Did you not read what I wrote?! I said that I spent very little time modelling the HUD, because it was just an experiment.I was more worried about the shooting part! And the HUD is textured you cheeky monkey. If you mean the hud Icon, then just open the HUD in .x viewer take a screeny and use that.

Yes, you did post that a while ago, but as Fred said, you never posted any evidence that you'd actually made a flamer. As a point, the whole reason I made and released this free flamer is because for ages I've been posting in people's flamer threads saying:
"flamers look rubbish, I've done it and it doesn't work"
So I thought I should put my model where my mouth was, so to speak.

Skywalker, I would say, I tried using smoke as muzzle flash a long time ago, and didn't like the way the flash moves up after each shot. It's still pretty cool though. Thanks for not Hijacking my thread.

If anybody wants to try out the flamethrower then you can download a level I built at:

http://www.savefile.com/files/115839

I built this to test Airslide's beta scripts 2 but I was playing around with the flamethrower and the retextured colt .45 so I figured I would throw it all together.
Notes:
Flamethower by Butter Fingers
Colt .45 retexture by s4real
Enemy AI by Airslide
FPSF Sound pack by Templar
Enjoy playing with this.

I don't know why the lag would be so bad.
It is a small level.
I didn't check out the ammo but I am guessing that it wouldn't be too hard to change the color with a paint program.

Where's your model at?
I will give you credit and thanks.
If not for you and Cheesy starting all of this Butters may have not made that flamethrower.
I like the model.
But that's just my opinion.

No it was white like when a texture is missing.
My good computer died so I'm on a backup for now till i can get a new one next year so thats why it had lag I would guess.

Looks extremely good butters. I reackon in the future when FPSC 12.0 comes out, and the Flamethrower is stocked with it, FPSC game creators alike will be saying: "All hail Butters and his awesome level, game and flame thrower design." (And the allyship.)

I just thought of an awesome idea...its a bit Postal, but its gonna be funny...

Thanks Butters!

I had an I idea for a flamethrower: this is an ideas I thought up just an idea mind you so please don't flame. A rocket launcher that shoots 10 or so rockets in a quick salvo each rocket has a small damage and lives a bit longer than the first one (the first one explodes about halve a segment away from you) before exploding. after the 10 or so rockets have been fired the whole thing repeats itself. (or it just continues as long as you hold the trigger) The result a short trail of explosions looking sorta like fire. (for better effect if possible make a blueish rocket and maybe turn rocket bounce on so the "fire" bounces of stuff. And add 1 or 2 health to the player with the fist 2 or 3 shots or somthing.) ok thats a farfectched but probabaly the only way you could make a really good (no offence butterfingers) proffesinal looking flame effect. I know what your thinking, This ideas rubbish but I think it might be possible with some tweaking and exganging of ideas.

slayer 2.

sadly I tried that (i think you'll find that I totally covered that idea in the bit about flak based flamers)

Basically the maximum rate of fire for the weapons is not fast enough for the 10 or so rockets to be close enough together to look like fire.

secondly, there is no way to alter the amount of time each individual rocket in the salvo would destroy.

Thanks for the suggestion, but if you'd read the big lectury post, you would have realised that this concept had already been attempted and discarded as ineffective. So don't worry. I haven't taken offence

ok I know but I had another Idea about the flamethrower. How bout a rocket launcher that explodes like 250 distance from you with a fast moving bluish rocket with a smoke/fire deacal moving at the same speed.
Ok thats my last Idea
