I was finally able to find a comp that could play it, and have to say I have no problem with the camera at all. Also, those were amazingly amazing animations. But the comp I ran it on is pretty slow, and took about ten minutes to load level 4, and three was very slow... Combat was amazing, but the jumping puzzle need a lot of work. I really like the weapon customization- really impressive. I think you should make the escape key bring up a pause menu of sorts though (though which you can return to the main menu), rather than have it quite the game.

The presentation, graphics, and shaders are all just about perfect. The gameplay only really needs help with the jumping puzzles, which kinda suck because the levels are so bleak, and it's tedious rather than exciting. If the levels looked like they were fun to explore, the jumping puzzle would be much better. With the deadline so close though, I doubt you're ready to revamp 20 levels. The music was great, and the sound were good.

It's far from perfect, but at this level of quality and with only simple mistakes like the levels not quite fitting the gameplay, I can't wait to see your next project if it's anything like this. I must have spent twenty minutes toying around with the weapon editor.

Because of some of the mistakes I can't say it's a sure fire winner, but I'll be damned if anyone gets a higher score on presentation or graphics.

It's already in fastsync... And sync off doesn't work... Thanks for the suggestion anyway...

Btw, currently working on the sfx of the 3rd cut-scene...

Great work Mike, ran fairly nicely on my PC:

AMD 1600
ATI 9800XT

The camera is really in need of attention as already posted, even having it track behind the player when they run forward would help, just too tricky to get the jumps right when they're not straight on. In terms of everything else though, it just sparkles quality.

Btw.. Soul's walking speed is quite slow (on slow and fast levels lol) [F Key helped on that proplem] i guess its used to skipcfaster those cinematis or whatever

[Edit]

The performance on my computer was fairly good. I turned everything on at 1024x768x32 and it was a little slow, but it was still smooth.

hello,
I have some personal questions.
I have been watching the work of The Full Metal Coder Roxas and
Mike Inel and I think it's awesome.
I'm an Electronical engineer, but I like learning to make games and arts.

To you both:

1) what career did you study (are you studyng)?
2) wich subjects do you recommend me(that help artist/game developers), to learn?.

Thanks in advance.

@Alfa x: Actually... Heheh... I stopped college... But I started learning 3dsmax and darkbasic since 2nd high school by self-learning... Maybe that answers your question... (Don't do what I did! Still take college!)

Now that I tested my game on a Pentium 4 2.6 Ghz with GeforceFX5500 and 512 RAM, the opening is totally slow! I'll add in the options "Environment particles On/Off"... I guess I should be really thankful with my Pentium D 3.4, cuz that's the only difference with this computer...

@Mike: Yeah I won't (since I already finished), thanks, Anything you recommend me to get better, for example, some good technique
that you learn and you think is good (I'm just starting to learn)?

You can always start again. (don't give up)

@Xenocythe: Nope... The options had the effects/shaders on/off, you could switch all those off... I also included the "Environment Effects On/Off" for those who are having slowdowns in the floor 3 (because of the rain fx)

@Alfa x: www.3dtotal.com / http://www.3dtutorials.sk. I use online tutorials to learn... (I think i'm going back to tutorial reading again for ZBrush2...) And try to play and observe games especially the good ones to see how they make things well-polished. Try also to observe badly made games, cuz they help you notice what makes a game awful. (heheh, seriously...)

The game is almost finished for my final entry! (Not as a final game, cuz it still has no ending...) Just a little bit more, and i'll upload the game again! Although there aren't much of change since the last demo, cuz i had full of bug fixings... 4 more days to go... Aw, crap!

@Roxas: Really impresive. From what i have seen from your work,
I have to put my hat down.
Keep it up.

@ Bizar Guy: Yeah, you may have all the reason.
I also think Dark Coder game is cool.
But, I think that way because of all the propaganda.
first the newsletter and
then the 3000+ views that has the screenshoots of that game.
And it has awesome graphics.
I don`t know...

I saw Dark Coder's game and it's really great! I wish I could be in 3rd somehow... With my unfinished, unpolished, hard to play, simple graphics game, I don't think I could even be in the winners...

Currently uploading the file... But it contains the author.txt, so i'll upload another next time for you guys to play it!
It has a very small difference from the last beta, so it doesn't really need a test...

With our newly formated computer, the game crashes right in the beginning! I found out that it's a bug of D3DFunc plugin, not liking the "arial" font... I dunno why... So I changed all fonts to "Papyrus"...

I'll post the link when I get it uploaded!

The final entry have some bugs that I didn't find it earlier though... The thunder VFX have some Z-Sorting probs... darn...

When I got time again here, i'll show a concept art of my next project... (If I get it finish...)

Alright. This game is officially one of the most impressive I've ever seen created with DBP. The modelling is excellent, the effects are excellent, the battling is excellent (It's fun to zoom around the arena and watch the character kill stuff) and the controls... well.. they took some getting used to but now they're fine!

Of all of the game elements, I liked the changes in the sky and the fighting the most. The lens flare was good as well. The fight song was good, and i liekd how the blade left a wave of light/darkness in the air.

Also, just to say, the cutscenes were simply amazing. I liked the opening. I was only able to get to level 5 though.

One thing: After I closed the game, I needed more video memory to run it again, so I re-booted my computer to get it to work. Also I had some slowdown issues on levels 3 and up. It would slow down for a few minutes, then speed up. Maybe the game is too good for my computer .

Brilliant Work here, Mike. Keep it up

P.S. I have some questions about the effects in the game (loved the weather and the magic and the cutscenes ), if you don't mind. I'll ask them if you give me the OK. I understand if its a secret and all.

Thanks. Just downloaded and tried it - but it crashes after choosing the display setting. I tried various display options but they all crashed in the same way with the familiar Windows message. Oh well, seems my PC can't cope with these entries, Scraggles' entry completely crashed my PC.

Is there a preferred display setting I could try?

Thanks for allowing me to ask questions! Prepare to be bombarded with questions... None of which you have to answer.

-How did you do the weather and fog? I liked the effect and would like to try it for myself

-How did you make those awesome fire magic fireballs? Were they plains? A custom object? They were pretty cool.

-How did you make the slash trail on the sword? I liked it a lot

-How did you make that circle thing around the character fade from being bright to being dark?

If you could answer any of these questions (Again, if they're a secret I can understand) it'd be great. Thanks, this game has inspired me to learn the normal mapping shader among other things

@Green Gandalf: That happened to me too when I had reformatted my computer... I hope I fixed that in the final version, so let's just wait for TGC to upload our games.....

@Sixty Squares:
-Fog: They're plains with smoke/rain textures that has lots of transparencies... I didn't used "ghost object on" though cuz "set alpha mapping on" doesn't work with it... I made them fade away whenever they get too far...

-Fire: They're also plains, but this time with "ghost object on" cuz this command contrasts anything that blends between opaque and transparent... And I used 10 animating images for the trails, but didn't "texture object" them in real-time though, cuz that slows down the game ALOT... (I only used that in real-time on the main character)

-Slash: It's a custom-made object that has an animation of scaling the vertices in the inner circle larger til they reach the outer circle...

-Circle around: They are two plains, one for white, another one for black. I used "set alpha mapping on" to blend them from white to black and vice versa...

I hope this helps... And btw, I didn't used any normal mapping here except the slashing effect...

Thanks for answering, Mike

I have another question... How were the fog and rain plains moving? Were they rotated randomly then moved in that direction? Did you scroll their texture? I'm very curious... Lol.

As for the normal mapping-- then how did you make the character be lit properly then?

They move in a direction stored on a float (in degrees), when they're far enough, they'll fade out, then be repositioned to the other side and fade in... Their rotation is by "set object to camera orientation"...
As for the normal map, the face has many polygons while the body has lesser...

And it has a viewer! (Made with DBPro of course!)

I just noticed that even if the competition is already over, this thread is still living... I have the feeling that I should be thankful about it...

That was my intial impression of your work based entirely upon the image posted in the screenshots thread. I was truly blown away by the general quality and presentation that your game displays.
And this only increased as I tracked down the thread for this game and witnessed your progress from the early months of the competition. It seems a bit like ICO with the gameplay of your average Devil May Cry game, and the graphical quality of some of the Resident Evil gamecube titles crossed with Shadow of the Colossus. Everything from the healthbar and the magics, to the animation and model design was astounding for an individual project.
Now I've said this a few times before now, but I truly mean it here when I say that this is the best project I have seen created with darkbasic professional (bearing in mind that I havent seen that many)
And so I truly mean it when I say that you have a great chance of winning one of the prizes for this compo and I cant wait for your next projects. One problem though. The demo download link doesnt work! I cant actually play this game
