I would try to make an entry, but I'm in Hawaii and without DB, so... oh well.

Here is the fine adjustment, although at the start one Kirby still falls through the matrix, it strangely doesn`t happen again

I also updated the texture of the cloth, but I must admit, I screwed it up... Data statements would have been better

Anyway here it is:

Yet again, I advise you to download the attached dba file because the dumb spaces are in the code snippit.

Cool

well, the challenge closes at 24:00 GMT so I think there's still 5 hours left for a last minute entry?

No, contrary to popular belief my name is not actually 'Sinister Stuff' but 'sinisterstuf', a misspelling resulting from the latter having too many characters with no spaces in between

Entry:
The little jumping Man... I know their is extra code that isn't needed, but I'm going to be building off it. Tell me what you think.

[-->EDIT<--]
I missed the deadline, but don't the rules say something about the challenge setter having to say it's over before it is..?

[EDIT 2]

I almost forgot to thank a few people:

-Latch (For help with my data statements and probably some other thing I can't think of right now.)
-Robert The Robot (He answered another thread on jumping, that I viewed. That gave me the basis for how to make it jump. BUT I made up the whole code and copied none of his )
and

-Everyone Else
You guys have been so helpful. And your free! Does it get any better?

@ Irojo
I see you used the example code I showed you... do you understand why I rewrote your code in the compressed manner you are using? Also, just as a regular practice, data statements should be at the very end of your program. They really aren't code but just a list, and putting them in the middle of a program can make it more difficult to follow.

But over all good job with the jumping man!

Now I'm gonna grab the jumping man and turn him into bouncing man!

Enjoy your day.

My original entry was going to be a billiards simulation. I think I'll leave bouncing man as my entry. But, I thought the pool game was starting to look not too bad so I'll post a screeny.

Thank You Very Much Latch. If it doesn't slow down the program, I like to have the data in the middle of the program. It makes it easier for me to know what image is being created each time.
Nice bouncing man by the way. That guy looks slightly amiliar...

[EDIT]
Nice billiards game... I bet some of that math made your head hurt.

Quote: "do you understand why I rewrote your code in the compressed manner "

Yes I understand what it does. It's first for...next makes it go down a column. The second for...next reads the column, and processes the code.

[EDIT 2]

The only thing I didn't like about your jumping man was... THE NOISE IT MADE!!!! You want to give me a heartattack my making the error noise? I hate that sound! Curse it's being!

You know, when I first started using DarkBASIC, my approach to pool ball collisions was real mathy and heady. I was all into the physics of what was going on and it had to be just so and make mathematical sense. I changed my direction in that regard at least when it comes to DBC. There are so many tools and easy to use commands in DarkBASIC that it makes "faking" the physics pretty easy! There is a general 90 degree rule in this type of collision where after the collision the balls are going to roll off at 90 degrees to each other. So, using a command in DBC atanfull() which returns the angle between 2 points, I just get the position of each colliding ball, find the normal of collision (that's the angle the balls are colliding at using atanfull() ) I make one move in the direction of the normal, and one move 90 degrees away from that.

Just one trig statement and I'm basically done with directions the balls will go. Trick shots, curves and what not can be carried out using CUREVEANGLE() - another handy DBC command. CRUVEVALUE() does the slow down of the balls for friction. All in all, DBC has a lot of the tools to make this kind of thing much easier.

Enjoy your day.

We're drifting away from the challenges now, so I'll finish up with: The whole point of BASIC is to have user friendly commands and code that makes programming a bit more approachable. I'm basically saying it's good to take advantage of the commands that are available in DarkBASIC and it can save you some trouble and grief when trig or calculus aren't your strong points. Of course I still see the value in learning and understanding the actual math and physics, but, when it comes to a demo or a game, if one can use shortcuts in terms of ready made libraries or commands that do the work or produce the desired results - then use those methods to your advantage. But I'm no real programmer. I'm just a hobbiest that has learned a trick or two while messing around with the computer.

Enjoy your day.

Ok, the CHALLENGE IS NOW OFFICIALLY OVER

yes, you're right, it isn't over until the challenge setter says so but if my watch is right (which it might not be) then all of you entered before 24:00 GMT. So, I'm going to have to find a a way to get your codes and then I will be processing the results!

Ok, here are the results, sorry it took so long, I had problems with THE INTERNET. SO:

NanoGamez Guy:
Your shattering glass looked very cool. I did it over and over again because it looked so cool. Maybe an optional slowmo effect would have been cool.
And the explosion was pretty clever too, I think. It reminds me of an entry I made for the DBpro cahllenge with an exploding box.

TheComet:
Very clever. I didn't expect something like a trampoline effect. Plus I just like watching those guys falling.

Irojo & Latch:
Neither of yours actually did anything that I could see. It was strange. Sorry about that

And so:

The runner up is:

And the winner is:

Well done to the winner and congratulations!!!
Up to you to set the next challenge.

Irojo's screen was black with a white line at the bottom and when I press space then the screen goes blue and flickers between blue and black. I did have to fix a little bit of code though.

Latch's screen was blue and... Nothing happened.

But when I REM'd out some code I saw what the jumping man looked like. And from reading the code I could tell what the program was supposed to do. I don't know why it didn't work though.
Nice idea though and I learnt a lot from it.

Wow. Thanks sinsisterstuf! The first time I join in a challenge, and I actually win!

Sorry I`m late, I didn`t get to the computer.

Ok, the next Challenge is:

Challenge
-The furious file scanning

What has to be done:

-You need to be able to scan through any folder you wan`t on your computer, including drives.

-You must be able to scroll down and up with the middle mouse button.(whoever doesn`t have a mmb, can scroll with the page up/page down)

-The system time has to be printed on the screen

-The following formats must be supported and viewable:
images:bmp,jpg,png
sounds:mp3,wma,wav,xm
models:x,3ds
animation:avi,wmv,mpg/mpeg
text files:txt

You will get more points if you add special effects like being able to set the models speed, frame, and size, or print a picture of a loud speaker vibrating when the music plays etc...

I will mainly be counting the above points and the graphical interface. You can have a cube rotating around with the folders printed on it, you can make the text burst into particles when you click on it... Anything graphical.

Bonus Points:

-Edit text files
-copy, move, replace, and delete files

Deadline:
I think 2 weeks will be enough, so the Deadline is on Sunday, July 2[b]8th midnight GMT[/b]

Is this a good challenge? I have never set one before, so just say if you don`t think it`s a good challenge

good luck to all,

1 week is NOT enough!!! Are you crazy!!! Some of us actually have work to do too!!! And what if I don't WANT to do ALL that stuff? Like I don't even know what a .xm file IS for cryin out loud! I've never heard of such a thing in my life. This is very specific... That's a good thing... But this might be TOO specific. In two weeks I could try something, definetly NOT 1 week! And .xm files... !?!

to be honest comet, i think that you are asking too much for a challenge. these are supposed to be fun little things that are challenging, but not so big the you could chare 3$ for the entries. Try to make it smaller, like just a bitmap editor or someting.

Quick question for the rules. It says no external media, but what about programs that all windows operating systems have, namely, regedit. In my program it uses it to read from a registry value and does NO writing at all. Is this allowed?

Ok, here is my entry so far, I would appreciate some feedback to know if it works on other platforms and any bugs that I haven't caught yet (I think I got them all). Pretty much all I have left to do is make it look nicer and get a few more buttons to work.

I think I got support for all of the file types and a few more (exes and midis). Let me know what works for you guys and what doesn't!

Controls:
Basically use the mouse to navigate through the files. Click the arrow on the side of the address to go up one level.

The arrow keys can scroll through the files, or you can use the up/down arrows or pageup/pagedown, if you prefer.

With any file that you view with the exception of texts, pressing any key will close it. With text files, just push enter. With those, you can scroll in all directions.

The buttons on the side and top work, except for my computer and control panel so far.

If you are using Windows Vista, you will be requested to use REGEDIT.EXE twice at the beginning, this is just to get a couple registry values, there is nothing written, just read.

Oh, and just fyi, my original idea was to imitate the lcars terminals from star trek, but that would require too many curves, so I just went with what I had at the time.

Big thanks to TDK, whose in game menu tutorial helped me out a lot during this project.

After I deleted 20, and 21, it worked fine for me.

Aside from the text editor, the rest I think wouldn't take very long to do.

Anyone know if there's a command to get the size of the checklist? Either I'm blind and can't find it in the help file or there really isn't one.

Good Idea Irojo.

Re. the severe exception, what os are you using? I ask so that I can try to fix it. It has to do with the registry key location. Without those lines, the desktop and My Documents buttons won't work.

@Phaelax:
checklist quantity()
but it's limited to 255 so it can be quite annoying if your using it to check files and there's more than that in a folder. I'd use find first and find next (If it's for file scanning).

[EDIT]
BN2:
Just checked your entry. Looks (potentially) great but I got the same error as Irojo. Then I 'rem'ed out the two lines Irojo suggested and I got:
'Runtime error at line 198. Checklist index is illegal'.

Also, I noticed that in the 'handletext' label, you copy each line into a string. Unfortunatley, strings are limited to 255 (where have I seen that number before?) so with lines longer than that, the program would generate an error. What you need to do is to read each byte individually and convert it into a character. Then you could use a word wrap like the one in 'word' or 'notepad'.

The problem with this method is that you can't use until file end(1)=1 because the file end() function seems to register a return/enter (ascii code 13 followed by ascii code 10) as the end of the file. To overcome this, you can use get file size() and then count how many times you use the read byte command until it reaches the file size.

@Nano
I don't find that limitation of 255 in checklist quantity:

In this particular case I get over 500 entries which matches the count in explorer.

@BN2
This looks like it could be pretty awesome! Though, I ran into some problems:

I have a couple of hardrives with multiple partions, floppy drive, a couple of cd/dvd drives - all in all, a lot of drives. It seems your program is hardcoded to read a c d e ? Am I mistaken?

Clicking on a file or folder reads back the file or folder next to it.

The drive display and folder selection is TOO big to fit on the screen properly (is this written in 1.13?) for DBC 1.20 . Could be the source for some other problems as well.

The lines:

might be biting into performance more than is necessary. Try using a 3D plain instead if this sprite is being used as background. You can size the plain to the screen dimensions (640,480) and position the plain at z=399.519 or z=400

Enjoy your day.

Yeah, I just finished the My Computer Button, which will give access to all drives that are accessible, but will address some of these errors that have been found, it all works fine on my computer, so I will try to fix them asap.

Quote: "The drive display and folder selection is TOO big to fit on the screen properly (is this written in 1.13?) for DBC 1.20 "

Yes it is the background, but also no. I had some trouble with collision detection with using the sprite directly, so I put the sprite offscreen and then paste it into the right spot. Any suggestions on how to make the sprite work would be appreciated, or I may change it all to work on 3D, although I was trying to avoid that.

Anyway, thanks all for the feedback, I will get to fixing it right now.

Looks like I have 1.2 enhanced. Could you post a screen shot so that I can see how it looks?

LOL Latch, nice entry!
Anyways, I'm very busy this week and next week so I will probably not enter this.

Latch's program really does it all. Impressive. You have potential. You know, I think you could market that.

I urge you to watch the film "Who killed the electric car". Support electric cars! Did you know their used to be more electric cars then gassoline cars?

Hmmmm... market software developed by someone else? Didn't the guy who MADE explorer.exe first do that?

@Latch:
What version of windows is that? It may be because of a different version of windows handling sizes differently.

Ever notice how in Microsoft word, the word "microsoft" is auto corrected to be "Microsoft" but "macintosh" just gets the dumb red underline?

I know. Bill Gates is infamous for having taken DOS, changing it a bit and then reselling it and getting away with it.

..sorry...had to sneak a comment in... I can easily jump on the bash Microsoft band wagon from time to time but Bill Gate's move was not only legal - but strategic, quick witted, right place right time and frankly - genuis if you think of the profit margin!

I may not like Microsoft - but - oddly - I like Bill Gates.

Gates is a business man, and a darn good one. Love him or hate him, you can't deny his success.

Hey guys, I updated the code to (hopefully) fix some of the problems, I will continue the development/testing until the deadline on another thread so as to not clutter this one up.

last time I tried it, which I admit was a LONG time ago, mousemovez only returned a 1,0,or -1. So you actually have to just check for the change, even though that is what it is supposed to do.

mousemovez is giving me ever incrementing numbers. If I keep scrolling, I can get -1700. So I just have to keep track of the previous value myself.

Got that sorted out and directory browsing (function was there but not the UI). You can also preview images now. Few more tweaks then I'll do audio previews.
