This will be the story of my new project, once I get a computer up and running that can be used for programming... I'm using a friend's laptop at the moment. Check my profile and my threads where you can find the one in geek culture about my harddrive incident.

I decided to plan it out by then.

This is Hassassin - Story of the Assassin.

Hassassin is pronounced "Hah-sah-seen".

The word "Assassin" originates from the arabic word "Hassassin". These Hassassin were a secret group who worked in spite of Allah, the islamic god. (My religion and my god )

Anyways, I'm switching their story around. Here it goes.

In the middle eastern world of chaos, the beginning of the 8th century introduced a new dimension. This new dimension was mixed with our very own, which caused many problems.

This other dimension contained life just like ours. It contained life, but no humans.

In this dimension that was mysteriously combined with ours, lived monsters that were aggressive, protective, and in no mood to share co-existence or the vast middle-eastern land with us humans.

Our only hope was the Hassassin, who would be assigned missions to eliminate the vulgar creatures that unexpectedly inhabited our land.

And so, you start out in the country of your choice; Pakistan, Afganistan, India, and Iran. You start out a young adult, the age of 21, who has to leave the fields and fight off the monsters in the areas that they exist.

You interact with all of the other Hassassin in this game, and soon, it becomes a fierce competition. Battle for the first rank in the Hassassin organization.

You also have the option of dueling another Hassassin.

Character Statistics-

Health: I'm aiming for a realistic health system that doesn't let you die easily, but allows wounds in any limb on the body. With a wound, movement of that body part is limited depending on the seriousness of the wound.

Stealth: The amount of noise/disruption you make to assassinate a group of monsters depends on the experience points gained.

Speed: With every other level up, your speed in running and combat increases. But if you choose the skill of ghost, you can be very fast, and even invisible and completely silent.

Strength: You get this primary statistic which increases every other level, but if you choose the skill of combat, you learn new moves and your strength increases even more.

Magic: If you decide to take the skill of a magician, you have the additional statistic of magic. Your spells can range from curses, to lightning strikes, to ice blasts.

Sword: If you choose the skill of a swordsman, you can use daggers and swords, and with every other level up, your skill increases.

Demon: If you choose the skill of a Demon, you can use curses and summon monsters that you can control. With every other level up, this skill increases.

Axemen: If you choose the skill of an Axemen, you learn combat with Axes, war hammers, and maces. This skill increases with every other level up.

Bowman: Upon choosing the skill of a Bowman, you can use bows and arrows. this far distance combat skill increases with every other level up.

Fact - You can only choose two skills when you create a character. You can choose another skill with every 30 levels. You can also buy another skill with every 10 levels (in U.S. Currency).

Fact - Magicians can learn spells that enhance their other skill. Say, and magician/bowman can use a spell that makes the arrows explode upon contact. A magician/swordsmen can make his sword contain fire, or lightning, which would strengthen every attack. There are many more spells, with other skills too.

Notes on the actual Hassassin:

"They were meticulous in killing the targeted individual, seeking to do so without any additional casualties and innocent loss of life, although they were careful to cultivate their terrifying reputation by slaying their victims in public, often in mosques."

"Typically they approached using a disguise; their weapon of choice was a dagger, rejecting poison, bows and other weapons that allowed the attacker to escape."

"For unarmed combat, the Hassassin practiced a fighting style called Janna which incorporates striking techniques, grappling and low kicks."

"Under no circumstances did they commit suicide, preferring to be killed by their captors."

"A victim, usually high-placed, might one morning find a Hassassin dagger lying on their pillow upon awakening. This was a plain hint to the targeted individual that he was safe nowhere, that maybe even his inner group of servants had been infiltrated by the cult, and that whatever course of action had brought him into conflict with them would have to be stopped if he wanted to live."

The Hassassin existed between the 8th and 13th century.

Sheikh-ul-Jibaal is the leader of the Hassassin, AKA "The Old Man".

"The Hashshashin were often motivated by outsiders."

"The power of the Hassassin was destroyed by the Mongol warlord Hulagu Khan."

The word 'Assassin' in arabic is : قاتل

Thats it so far, I'll update with more and more information that I plan later on. This is just a starting idea.

Any ideas comments are welcome. This MMORPG will go far, I promise

First of all, that was the most major insult I've ever gotton on these forums, Ethan. Crappy countries? If you said that to my face you'd be wishing I was deaf. Pakistan is the country I was born in, and its my entire family's country, even though I live in the US now. They may be a little poor, but most parts aren't poor at all. Pakistan is slowly and gradually turning into a great country. It's not corrupted, like America. Theres not one person who hates Pakistan, unlike the many Anti-Americans in this country. Now, take that insult back, and won't be fuming at you any longer.

Second of all, the very first assassins, as I said, called "Hassassins", originated from those countries. it would onnly make sense to go along with history.

Uhh, Steam Assassin, what would a steam skill do? I don't understand what a steam skill is.

Besides the blatant insult to Xenocythe etc, I also think that starting in/visiting such countries would be very interesting for a game - I mean, how often do you see these countries in games? Most are based in Europe or the US, and I reckon a game which featured anything else besides would be a refreshing, interesting experience

lets not get this thread locked over such things guys.

YOur game sounds pretty cool! I like the theme and the setting, I just don't like the mmorpg factor. It will sort of push the storyline aside, and make it a more arcadish game (like how i view wow, no point to it other than who has the biggest... err... character level.) I think a single player, or small multiplayer rpg version would do quite well. But the whole battle for highest rank etc fits the mmog standard i guess, i would just like to see the story taking a different angle.

Steam Assassin - lol. I guess I could? But what would it do to the enemy?

David R - Good point, I just realized that many games haven't taken place there

Wigget - You've caught my attention. I also do not like exactly how the story reflects as an MMORPG. Battling for the top level is overused, and its in WoW too. Although, that did attract a large crowd, didn't it?

But what should it be then? Battle for the highest Hassassin rank? Battle for the most missions done? Battle for the most experience points?

Nice idea, Xeno.

Ethan, watch what you say, Pakistan is not a crappy country, no less crappy than USA or UK, mind you England is becoming a mix of Pakistan, india, Poland and China And well if Xeno put a set of Arabic/Muslim based characters, based on those principles, it would be based on the area of Origin, as a Jewish story based game wouldn't be set in Japan "And Moses cast to the heavens, opening the water passage way to Okinawa and walk along the bed of the ocean, with the Jewish Yamato slaves trailing behind..."

I'd like to see this executed Xenocythe, it would be interesting to an Islamic take on a game with monsters in it, although I do suppose Final Fantasy has taken some of the Arabic monster's them selves

I say battle for Hassassin rank, perhaps introduce a guild system, where you start off as a petty thief to survive, you grab the cash to pay entrance to an assassin's guild and work from there to get your head up in with the hassassins.

Aha, thats a great Idea Seppeku. I might just go with that. I was thinking something like that, but I wasn't sure.

I've updated the first post with more Character Statistics, skills, and Facts.

A guild system is something I really want in my MMO. It won't be too hard at all.

And speaking of Islamic monsters- you've given me an idea for the first demon monster that can be summoned. I shall sketch this out! It is a 'Gin'. Gin's are devilish creatures that are said to be the diciples of Satan. At least I think...

Do you mean a Djinn?

I'm not sure why your aim here is to make it a MMORPG - you've mentioned that you want guilds and for competitions as to who is the most 'uber' Hasaassin, but I'm not sure what making this a MMORPG gets you other than massive headaches.

If you were more interested in say, the power struggles between several factions of Hassassins, or perhaps multiple cabals of Hassassins are fighting over control of cities or land, or even a pseudo-political endgame with Hassassins using both strength of arm and stealth to ensure that their chosen Shah weilded the greatest power in the land - then than might lend itself more to a MMO. It would be more about what a lot of people can do, as opposed to the strength of one.

As it is though, what you describe sounds like it would be great fun as a single player campaign in the style of Thief, Prince of Persia or Assassins Creed.

Also, I wonder if you will be including the most distinctive feature of the Hassassins - indeed that which gave them their name. If not, then it seems like a waste of the name. If you are, then expect a lot of controversy to surround it.

Tinkergirl - I'd have to say that's the most amazing idea. I didn't even think of that. I will, even thought it may be difficult, go with your idea. I just think it's such a great idea. Thank you very much!

Yes, I will go with the distinct features of the Hassassin. I'm doing mostly research, looking up pictures, articles, anything to give me a perfect idea of exactly what Hassassin are.

Tinkergirl, do you have MSN? If you could add me at [email protected] then I would love to further discuss this online.

And yes, I meant Djinn. ^^ I don't have that great of n idea about them. I just remember a surah (prayer) from the Quran (our book of guidance) that explains about them.

Thank you so much Tinkergirl, I would really love it if we could talk about this more.

While I agree that Ethan's comment was uncalled for and rude, you turned around and did the same thing by insulting America .

About the game:
Sounds like a cool game idea, kind of like Thief and the upcoming Assassins Creed. I don't know about the MMO part, like Tinkergirl said, it seems like it'd be just as good as an MMORPG. But it sounds good anyways, good luck with it .

Yeah, sorry about insulting back.

I did say I was going to quit programming for a while, and I am because I don't have a computer that I can program with. But I thought- hey, why not plan it all out in the time being?

So I came here for feedback, and it's turning out quite well

I've done a tiny bit of research and put it up in the bottom of th first post, as well of a picture of a Hassassin.

Assassins Creed looks pretty cool. I'll check it out more later. Until then, I'm doing some sketches. Once I get a scanner from a friend, I'll put them up here.

Any one else going to comment on anything? I really want feedback on the Character statistics and how the skill system works. Does anyone like the magician/other skill system in the Facts?

Nope, I'm out to make a decent game Wigget. This is gonna be a free game.

I'm thinking that these monsters are rather intelligent. They are fighting for territory and taking over most of the middle east. Average citezens have no chance fighting against these creatures, so it's up to the Hassassin to kill them.

I've also had this rather intersting idea where you can choose to be either on the monster side, or the human side. Let me explain.

It think it would be really fun if people played either the monsters or the Hassassin. There are periods of time for each play of game, which could be about 2 months or something. So for those two months, the monsters and the Hassassin battle off, fighting to see who gets more territory. The side that turns out with the most territory at the end of this period of time wins. Then, the period of time is restarted, and the territory is reset, but the characters still have all of their stats and items. And then, I was thinking, the side that won last gets more to start out with in the beginning. Or should it be less? I just want to sort of balance it out.

I'm really looking for people who are interested, and can help me develop an idea for an MMO like this. I'm stronger at making stories for RPG's, so I guess I need help for making it MMO

And if anyone has the time or cares enough to read all that I write, please do so and help.

Thanks,
-Xeno

I wouldn't make it MMO myself, I find they're boring and repetitive and all the same, you can't add the same sort of twists in those games as you can in a single player game, I have always preferred single player to multiplayer myself, see by doing an MMO I imagine in my head Silkroad online, Kal Online etc. that all follow the same style, except instead of following Chinese history and mythology or Korean you're going for Arabic/Islamic which you could make a good game, but I think sticking to single player this game would work better.

But that's my opinion, if you're set out on doing an MMO, power to ya man, it will be interesting to see what the result is. (I just don't see the necessity of doing so)

Although I do suppose players as monsters is more original though. I had fancied being the powerful monster in an RPG before, which is why I liked having Vincent in my party when playing FFVII and why the FFX battle system is appealing.

You'd be advised to look in to the good and bad points of games like Dark Age of Camelot and Planetside - ones that have realm/faction combat that directly relates to gaining and losing territory. It's a very delicate thing to balance, and few games manage to carry it off.

For example, if suddenly 2/3 of your players decide it would be fun to 'monster' for a while, then they would have the numerical advantage. No one likes to lose, so I'm guessing a lot of people would log out their Hassassin and play a monster character instead. So you'd have a small hardcore group of Hassassins HOPELESSLY outnumbered and massacred by the invading monsters. Yay, monsters win.

You can't really have the Hassassins win, because otherwise what's the point of playing in a group, if strength of numbers doesn't count. And people will swap sides the instant they feel they're going to lose. People want to be on the winning side.

Next, so the Monsters have won and they've gained the territory - you want to reset the game after 2 months. They've worked for nothing and there's no point to fighting at all. (A problem with Planetside, I might add.) You want to reward those who win, because otherwise what's the point of fighting? But you can't punish the people who lose, because otherwise why would they bother fighting? They've already lost once, if they're punished, they've got even less chance!

These aren't easy problems to fix, and I'm not sure anyone's shown what the best solution is yet - DAoC and PS certainly haven't got it worked out, imo.

Have you perhaps considered going down the A Tale In The Desert route? That's a smaller MMO, which is played out in 'arcs' that last a year or two, and have a definite ending. Each arc has a beginning, middle and end, and the actions of the players actually makes a difference to the outcome. I believe ATitD is now on its second story arc, (it's set in a mythical egyptian history) and the plot of that one was directly influenced by what the results of the previous arc was. More like a movie and a sequel, instead of the usual MMO groundhog day.

(The only idea I've had alternative to this, is to take a route of 'accepted winners' and 'guerrila soldiers' - whoever owns the terrirory amasses loads of cash and resources, but whoever DOESN'T own the territory can recruit rebel 'pets' and gain abilities like 'ambush' and generally try to incite the natives, somehow. Just an idea - both sides gain benefits, one the underdog and other other the master.)

I see what you mean Sep and Tinkergirl.

How about I ditch the whole monster idea? What if it is just a battle of territory between guilds of Hassassin?

I could make this world even bigger than I had in mind. With this idea, the more territory to own, the more guilds there will be.

So whats the purpose? What's the prize for getting the most territory? Additional stats? Free 'fake' money that can substitute real money for buying items? High influence on the country and it's actions?

Another flaw is- how will Hassassin level up? Just fighting other Players would be a bloodbath, not an MMO. I was thinking private missions to assassinate some people and that would give you experience and raise your guilds status or whatever, but I could easily see that getting boring.

So if I go with all Hassassin fighting for territory, what would be the prize, and how would characters level up?

Sorry man but you mentioned paying US currecny for extra skill trees, so I assumed you wanted the whole payment setup. As for your monster idea, it works to a degree, one that TG didn't mention was world war II online, that has allies vs germans, and you'd be hard to find someone who plays both. as for territory stuff, well they have cities that are protected by ai (much like planet side) and its usually a struggle to cap the whole of europe.
my view on it though, it could work, but its more of a mmo-team death match, and not an rpg.

though if you want factions etc, why not have it that each city has its own sect of hassassin, and you can join a city's sect, which will be much like a guild. But each sect battles each other for control of territory, by having a world map (with cities placed wherever, and inbetween the cities have fields of stuff (or deserts ) but have dungeons or demon gates spotting the map, and each gate is a small bubble of territory. To capture more territory guilds need to send out groups of dungeon crawlers to conquer the dungeons and expand their territory. At the end of the two months, the sultan awards the hassassin sect with the most territory a prize in gold and jewels (or something else special) as a reward for keeping the safety of the kingdom.
Rival sects can choose to contest a dungeon as well, so they can capture territory of other sects by entering the dungeon with 4 or more people, thus resetting the dungeons status to nuetral and re-spawning all the monsters.

And then, if all dungeons are captured, have a catastrophic event, where the grand demon enters from a hole in teh ground or some huge dungeon tower in the center of the kingdom, and all sects must send adventurers into the dungeon to destroy some sort of demon or a token that keeps the hole open and monsters raiding the land. When they succeed the map gets reset (maybe the people who killed the demon/closed the seal get some rewards.

the best thing for you is that if you want this, you don't even need to make a new engine, just look for kohaku's AGE program, it's an mmo builder, lets you build huge worlds and have lots of players on it. I'm using it for a few thing snow, but if I can get convseo or 3ds models low enough I wouldn't mind sketching up some arabian city structures when i get some time.

If everyone is out to kill each other, wouldn't that be a bit confusing if one person was set to go to x place, then x person leaves x place to kill y guy at y place.

PS:

Sorry about saying Pakistan is a crappy country, but India and Iran are pretty screwed up and Afghanistan is getting better though. Will be able to travel around the whole world?

Sorry, but what do you mean? I'm just curious that's all.

Don't get too political, just send me a link or something i can chew on this morning......morning over here anyway.

If you get stuck somewhere or anything then feel free to add me to your msn, and i'll be happy to do what i can.......unless it is "Can you optimize some code?" Sure i say, then gets sent over 10.000+ lines of code. Like i almost did to poor "Van B".

Wigget,
Your idea is rather interesting. It's sort of a turn around in a good way. First your against each other, then you have to fight with each other to battle off the monster

It's a really cool idea to me, but my mind is still clinging to the idea in my previous post. I'll need to solve those two flaws to be able to do your idea too.

Ethan,
It's cool I thought you were just being rude and were racist of some sort, but since it was a mistake and you didn't know you would offend me, it's okay

Grandma,
This is is not my first project, I've had DB for 2 years now
But yes, I know what adrenaline your talking about. It's a good thing too, except the language does take some decent learning for someone to make an MMORPG

I'll try to find a way to get the concept art I drew up here. I'm not the best artist, but I'd say I'm good enough, hehe.

So does anybody have ideas on the two flaws? That's really the biggest thing on my mind right now. Thanks everyone for all your help. I really want to design this all out, starting from the basic and advanced plot structure. There's no way I would allow this project to fail.

Hehe sorry, i'm sure i read that somwhere that it was your first. Meehh i just woke up then and had like 12 different windows on-screen, each with one thread showing, must have cross-read some

I was being sarcastic about the adrenaline thing. but hey! If you get adrenaline from programming then good for you.

btw, i've had DBP for 1.5 years and still working on my first project

Quote: "So if I go with all Hassassin fighting for territory, what would be the prize, and how would characters level up?"

Prize? perks maybe? Somwthing like, i dunno......"Heavy Sleeper" lol, with a perk like that, an Hassassin can rest "in the wild" to regain health and/or other things. Not neccesarily inside inn's and stuff, but you wont regain as much just to fair things out a bit. Maybe increase the health/mana regained for each "victory"?

Also you can add dusins of different perks, just use your imagination. Maybe something like "The Tolerant"? (you should come up with a better name because i don't know what to call it) Who can handle things like various poisions better that the Hassassins might get from their relative dangerous trips.

About the level up system, i don't know. You should use some time meditating on that because it's a very important part of any RPG's IMO.

Yeah. Thanks for the ideas, they are pretty good. I like the perk thing. But then again, a gold prize as wiggot said is amazing as well

Thanks for helping!

Quote: "but India and Iran are pretty screwed up "

To be fair though, so is England and America, it depends at how you look at it, heck there are a lot of countries that are screwed up in one context or another, but me getting into that is me breaking the AUP. But to this game, I don't think their present situation is relevant from what I have intpreted on it.

Dropping the monster's idea would work then (I mean Kal Online has an assasin system and monsters) I like the idea you're going for a more assasin based stuff, perhaps you could have such tasks to assasinated bigots, perhaps some of Allah's enemies, here you may not have to avoid the monster thing completely, you could conjure a creature as a magical power (I don't know Islam and it's history, so I don't know where that would tie in) you could even slay the monster's or the masters of monsters who do intend to do harm to the places you live or protect. You could start as that petty theif and the earn the honour of Allah by building up to Hassasin. (I'm sure creating a game like this will reduce some of the ignorance people have around the Islam religion )

Nice idea Sep, btu I'm aiming to make this game as least religious as possible, to avoid controversy that might even offend some other people.

I was thinking that if I dropped all combat entirely, there would be no reason for the skills I posted in my first post.

Making a gathering of most people's ideas, this is what I have come up with:

Players sign up, customizing their character through many possibilities. They start out with little money, little food or water, and only a small dagger. Turning 18 years old now, they must leave their families and fields to join a guild of Hassassin, or get 12 people gathered to make their own guild.

Once you join or create a guild, you must help to gain more territory than any other guild in these extremely large 4 countries on the map.

There will be dungeons, sort of like training grounds. In these dark dungeons or caves of some sort, you could fight monsters like Djinns, and demons. This is one way you can train and level up.

Another way to level up and gain higher ranks in your guild is doing missions. You could be assigned to kill a person in a town or a monster that has high status in a dungeon.

The prize for having most territory is an amount of gold and items.

There two questions that need serious answering - how will territories be gained? A mission to raid a certain town with your guild members? Or raiding another Hassassin's territory? Or what?

The other question is; Should these extremely large countries be made up of a few advanced terrains that are really big with a really big texture and heightmap, or tons of little advanced terrains that have 256 by 256 textures, and are pretty much just 'zones'.

If I choose little advanced terrains, depending on the size of the world on my mind, there could be over one hundred advanced terrrains to a country. I'm gonna make a really, really, really big heightmap for each 4th of the country, then cut it up into many 256 by 256 heightmaps. This way it would be seamless and a bit easier to handle.

Well, that's a big sum of what I have in mind so far. Thank you everyone for all the help I've gotton so far. It really did help alot.

I think you start this project very interestingly in the description, going into information about the Hassassin -- which is actually where the word "hashish" comes from as well, as a side-note.

But as soon as there were monsters and hero inflation etc... Well, all I can say is - hasn't this been done before? A thousand times?

I love new ideas and new concepts. But to use unexplored countries is to open up a whole new gateway into untouched storytelling -- not a way to kill "even more monsters." All countries have their own stories to tell that suffer from none of the D&D diseases of today's fantasy genre.

Use those stories instead, would be my suggestion. Though it's probably a lot more work than to go for the traditional. Original ideas are never guaranteed to be good, after all.

I think that sums up a good idea myself.

Quote: "ow will territories be gained? A mission to raid a certain town with your guild members? Or raiding another Hassassin's territory?"

Perhaps you take out the generals and leaders, whilst others hold off the armies, sort of sneak around guards, get in and murder the git, it can be either a Hassassin's town or a new one, you could mix both in.

I usually get a good collision system in and us a .x terrain, but that doesn't work for everyone, so how about the little small ones, it should make things more manageable.

Entomophiabiac,
I'm not sure if you read it all from the top to the bottom, but I don't blame you... I write too much

I had dropped the monster idea. It's all about controlling the most territory.

Sep,
Thanks! I'm trying as much as I can. Now that the advanced terrain question is solved... I really just want to spice this story up. It's not super exciting like I'm looking for, it's just "yay" average

What about being a freelancer/mercenary if you wanted? Instead of joining a guild.
Quote: "how will territories be gained?"

I think it should be much like a "real war", or "gang war", certain groups control certain areas, patrolling it, doing stuff in it, whatever, and should other guilds invade, it would be a kind of "stealth war", where people would pull back or advance territory. The territories themselves I think should be divided up into small "sectors" (just somewhere around 100 yards*100 yards), in order for the computer to actually read how much territory each guild has. To control a territory, you could:
a) have to take control of a certain "point", by capturing it
or
b) have the most number of Hassasins in it
I opt for a. If you've ever played "Company of Heroes", those are the type of zones/sectors I'm talking about. If you haven't heres a screenshot to show you want I'm talking about http://media.pc.ign.com/media/743/743961/img_3906664.html

Spicing up the story, just as well I wish to be a travelling author, well, on the top of my head, I can think of as a story.

Perhaps your character has lost his family to an evil warlord, his family being a part of the slaughter he raged when pillaging villages, your character an honourable man, who loved, provided for and protected his family. He was crushed to hear of his death when he was away, he felt as though he had betrayed them, and saw that there are many more that will face the same fate, he felt he could honour his family by helping protect others and by finally destroying the war lord, now he has many generals, so taking this one man out was impossible, especially as your character has never touched a weapon in his life, he had to start small, so the whole point of the game would be to eventually assassinating the warlord, competing hassassins and his generals, to bring peace to the lands you roam and to the families like your own.

Its 'the war of one', you'll need companions of course, it will be a rebel war if you will.

So how is that for a plot? I mean you can take what you like and play with it for what you like best.

Inspired by Assassin's Creed by any chance?

it's a nice idea, the best part is it's set in an original location for once you get too many games based in the US in my opnion. Keep up the good work.

Thanks guys

I'm gonna upload a picture (I took with a cell phone) of the drawing.

The whole large world test is going rather smoothly. I made a program that automatically cuts and saves my height map and texture because I was way too lazy to do all that work by my self

Now, all I have to do is assemble the actual terrain, which might be a hassle because I hate math in programming

EDIT: Oh right, forgot to tell you.. I get to sneak in about 20 minutes of programming on my dad's laptop a day :-P

That's all I really have time for, have so much homework from school.

Cool design dude, has that middle eastern, yet Zorro look to him (Its the sword and cape, I also imagined a scimitar, but my knowledge of the history in those areas is not as good as others)

Are there gonna be like religions or no? I hope not, that would ruin the game, but considering this game is in the Mid East...
