Just a request to Lee, Rich, and all the big guyz of DBC & DBP:

Is it possible to plan a DBC/DBP Convention 2003 in UK? This is because ya'all did it before (i referred from RGT) but it would be nice for us here (UK & Europe) if u have it here also. U know, having the iternary like before, modelling, bsps, lectures, demos & stuffs like ya'all did last November.

I know its easier said than done (hotel costs, food, etc), but its just a small request that'll probably just fade away Hope u guyz can consider it , because it would be one cool experience to be there as they had experienced it last time

A convention would be nice - I'd like to see what everybody looks like, more than anything else!

Also, on a plus note, the thought of being able to show off might encourage me to do a bit more work!

Oh, and let's have it in Nottingham, shall we? I don't need to go anywhere then!

last i heard it was gonna be in Lagmaster's hometown, which right now it escapes my memory ... but its also where Martyn lives (like that'll help anyone hehee) ... think it begins with a B

anyways i hope it is still on, i don't go on RGT much - only when people show art here - dunno about you guys by even on my upgraded connection its slow as hell to load up.

I suggest if there is any convention to be held then lets have it in Manchester (I dont live there, honest). Its a great idea though. I was speaking to Lagmaster about it, i think he lives in Kent and tickets for the convention will first be offered to DBDN members :-s

Still i hope i can get a ticket.

Mnemonix: u mean there is a limit in tickets?

hmm.. maybe its understandable, due to better concentration of audience, instead of open convention. But as always, they can always book a bigger hotel hall. How much was the tickets last November?

August ... 3 more months! Yay!

hey Toady you ever been to Lan party before? i know squat about connections, which is probably why those i end up hosting end up being everyone going down the pub to get pissed them back to mine for SuperSmashBroMelee tourny

but usually the idea is we just have marathon gameing sessions over the whole weekend - i really wanted to goto the Vulcanus one last year cause that was gonna be off the hook - buht ya know i was working ... and norway is so far to go

Lan parties used to generate so much business for my local pizza delivery firm you wouldn't believe... Almost every weekend, 10am Saturday until ~5pm Sunday was a mammoth game of something or other, Dark Omen / Total Annihilation / TOCA / F1GP... with anything up to 5 of us... could barely hear anyone talking from all the computer fans, beeps and explosions. I remember several games of TA where the protagonists fell asleep on the 2nd day...

On subject though, i'm all for a convention and would like to attend, especially if it's in Harlow area as I grew up near there and know I wont get too lost trying to find it.

10th person to enter the hall = gets a free DBP + DarkMatter
15th person = DBP + DM + 3DGMaker
50th person = DBP + DM + 3DGM + DBDN for 1 year
99th person = DBP Source Codes!

okay okay, the 99th person has a time limit though, he should be given 1 minute with the source code CD in his hand & from there he should get away from the hall as fast as he can.. 'cause then Lee will start to chase him with a shotgun!

kinda like a 'tension release therapy' for Lee for working hard with every bugs found!

hehee... did anyone compete in the Freelancer tournament in 2001?
i wanted to but i wasn't allowed

i kinda missed doing the tournei's i used to rank 3rd in the world at Quake - that was before all of this DSL melarky...
think Nottingham would be a far better place to set it up cause we could rent out the infamous "Playing Fields" for it
think it'd be awesome if we like had a tonne of comps there atleast so that if we wanted we could sit down and have a lil coding session and whatnot rather than just meeting.

i've been to alot of conventions and to be honest most are boring as hell, the UK one for DB should break the mold a bit - just like DBS did with DarkBasic itself
sides i'd love to sit down and have a MMO of Battlefield 1942 or PlanetScape against the DBS team

if they still have the rankings online lookup the name "Shadow(Fear)" around the 95-96 time.

if you want to know quite how well i can play, i'm banned on alot of CS & DoD servers because they think i'm using AimBot... on the Vulcanus JK2 Server around 6months ago i was one of the highest ranking Jedi Masters, and on America's Army i'm a General with 120honour (and i've not played for 3months)

which oki isn't much to say, but considering all that was achieved on a Software 56k Modem on my Laptop - it might per into perspective just how well i play online
i played on vulcanus for a few days before christmas on an isdn 128kb connection and i was accused of cheating by everyone cept Djinn - who finally had someone worth fighting on the server.
(^_^) its not a simple task to become a Jedi Master in a game which conforms more to chance than skill.

I'm more of a Starcraft/UT man myself, but I'm always ready for a good bash on most games. That is, apart from Age of Empires.

In the meantime, I'm searching frantically for an unused copy of Phantasy Star Online for DC; double-sabres rule!

Age of Empires 2=One of the best 5 games ever made

That's impressive Raven . I am in awe of your 0wnage.

Soldiz-- there were some intresting lectures about 3d models, BSP, good coding... I missed Mike's showcase because I wasn't there on Sunday ... we chatted some, looked at each others' projects, etc. I was only there for one day, but it was quite fun.

Well if it's blowing your own trumpet for games playing skill at steak:

Only 3rd Raven?

I was ranked No.1 for Dark Omen for a good few months, then stopped playing although I was still in the top 3 six months later...

I've played well-over 1000 battles of Total Annihilation, I lost one on a small map once when all the other players charged their commanders at me the moment the game started. I lost my second game to a friend on a LAN game on the day we got Core Contingency expansion and well, I learned about the Krogoth in that battle.

I'm not so hot at Quake type games though, i'm a bit erratic sometimes top and sometimes last....

i'm miserably bad at Dark Omen... i love the game, but i'm REALLY bad at it lol
Overhead Strategies arn't my forté - FPS ones are
and 3rd is pretty impressive, i once played the world champion (who is STILL the world champ after almost 7years) and he slaughtered me... and i mean SLAUGHTERED me.
game was 182-27 and the match was only 30mins long, his reactions are better than some fighter pilots i've played against.

Actually i'm not terribly good at Dark Omen, I've lost tones of games to friends although admittedly many where not even battles because we used it as the battle engine for a series of Mighty Empires board games.

For some reason though I was always dead lucky when I played online and lost very few games.

Red Alert is another of my old stalwarts, i've probably only played 100 or so games but I don't think i've ever lost. I remember once I started working at Simply Computers and the technical team had a big LAN game - 8 of us playing against each other. I waited until I heard the first sounds of battle between two other players, then sent my armies out... 1 for each player plus 1 to defend my base. It is true that a few of my armies needed reinforcements to complete the victory for which I hold my head in shame

Dark Omen, Counterstrike, DoD... never played any of them. Must keep safe from multiplayer madness

I am pretty good at Unreal Tournament though . Not the best, but on the few occassions I join a server I usually shoot right to the top.

On the other hand, it's been almost a year since I played it

I used to enjoy Day of Defeat too (btw the reason i'm posting so much is because my project is taking soooo long to compile), I was a bit erratic but I remember once I was playing really well and I asked the clan who's server I was on if I could join their clan.

They said I wasn't good enough - and I preceeded to score more frags than the rest of the server put together two games in a row. *snicker*

If only I could do that every time I played it.

lol... i used to play on the Blueyonder Servers, clean house there then head over to some favourite Clan servers - can't remember the names cause i used to just setup my favs when i found one i liked.

I was asked to join the clans that i was on the servers for, never wanted to be in one though. Only ever been in a single clan... the pretty infamous "Shadows" clan. 4 of the top ranking Quake2 player plus myself and we played in such a way that we broke the spirit of a few clans which gave up during matchs
... we had a way of communitcating which of the players we were close to, used to stalk them and go in for the kill in teams of 2...

i was ShadowFear at that point, and i was always teamed up with ShadowSide ... we'd have a way of luring 2-3 members of the same team after one of us for the kill and the other would be waiting to just clean house. If i was running i see the signal "TTR" i'd turn around and let loose with a nice volley of fire

don't think many other teams used signal systems, atleast not to the same effect or bound like we did. "DMW" stood for an enemy, we'd then have east/west/north/south/up/down for the things.
you'd see on your screen

2x DMW East Up - it'd mean there were 2 Dead Men Walking in the Upper East Quad of the level
i think it was best when we used the levels we'd designed outselfs - worlds you could barely see, alot of ambience and somewhere you wouldn't want to fight in.
you could hide in alot of places in those levels, if you crept around no one could hear or see you until it was too late

other 2 guys on the team were Armageddon, ShadowTerror & ShadowEmbrace ... Armageddon lead the team was a true terror, i used to play with her on the Jedi Knight servers ... she used to enjoy almost killing opponents and then letting them revive before he destoryed them. Kinda sick but she was good at what she did lol

i wouldn't mind regaining days like that again, only problem is the time and error taken to play online
i suppose i have my mech game, thats in a relatively playable state now - well sortof, playble as in the movement is done.
but then i've only ended up spending 4hrs on actually coding and modeling, everything else was spent doing other things.

ya know gotta talk to a new artist about the music for my pro project, plus see about booking the LSO (they charge £580/hour that is just amazingly expensive, or atleast i think so... but then again it is a whole orchestra)
man so much going on - wonder when Lagmaster will be back on here to actually talk about what could be going on or something.

Yeah kinda is, lol

but I was ranked no. 1-5 on 4 Team Fortress Classic servers with over 2000 kills.

After a recent 1 month break I'm not even on the first page listing on some of those servers.

(Current)-Game entering concept art stages-
(progress)-Should have demo in 6 months latest-
(misc.)-nothing of the misc. sort as of now-

Topic? Isn't that a chocolate bar.

I think the best multiplayer game ever is Hidden and Dangerous... It was the first truly co-operative game i've ever played (rather than non-offensive multiplayer aka Diablo/racing games) but more to the point - you really wanted to keep your squad mates alive. I was typically the strategist and found a cunning trick in commanding one to suicide whenever I wanted a coffee.

I've only ever managed to get 3 people together at once for that, which was kind of annoying because the LAN group at the time was about 8 people... Having a 4th would have been so much better because then i'd have had no spare character to suicide before I got a caffeine hit.

I've never really played online much, although I do a fair bit of LAN gaming. It means I can't say I'm number whatever at game whatever, but I can say that I'm yet to meet somebody who can best me in all my favourite games (especially Mechwarrior 3!).

That said, I've seen some replays from the top Starcraft ladder players - all I can say is: "Wow!"

I think it's more the case that most programmers tend to make good gamers.

Certainly when I play an RTS game the AI's are no challenge, this maybe because my own skill at writting AI's is fairly good - I suss them out in no time... Also I understand the way my own units will attack under certain conditions very quickly because I recognise the patterns in the AI within moments of starting to play a game.

Games like Quake require reaction times and spatial awareness which arn't skills that go hand in hand with programming, but many other programming skills will help you when you play a game, the ability to type fast is invaluable, or at least understanding the keyboard layout - most programmers do a lot of typing... And i'm sure we could think of a dozen more reasons on top of these too, such as DarkBASIC is a games writting language, so the people here are people who love their games...
