Banner Background by TheK

##This Week’s Theme##
Natural Disaster

Whether it be a snowstorm, a flood, a hurricane, or an earthquake; create your scene, and then ravage it by your choice of any one of Earth’s natural furies. Cover a city under snow, or submerge it in water. Level it with an earthquake, or rip it to pieces with a tornado. Show the during or the aftermath of an environment caught in nature’s wake.

Quote: "Specific rule(s) for this competition:

-Your scene may take place in any time period, so long as it takes place somewhere on Earth.

-Your scene may take place either indoors or outdoors, but the theme of a natural disaster should be apparent just the same.

-You may capture either the during or the aftermath of the environmental disaster of your choosing. For example, for an earthquake, you may show the events occurring during the actual earthquake (buildings collapsing, trees falling over, etc), or you may show what remains of your scene soon after the disaster occurs.

-You do NOT have to destroy your scene, but you can. A blizzard for example, may blanket the environment in snow, however structures may remain intact."

Kravenwolf, these competitions have been fantastic. Thank you for hosting them for those amitious enough to try and for the pleasure of bystanders as well.

I would certainly like to get EAI's G36c for free. I look into entering sometime after I get myself to create a forum email account. Prizes are delivered via email, correct?

Thank you,

Like I said in your other competition, I do not have a game to currently screenshot. I shall next time though! Well, maybe not exactly next time but sometime!

Vental is some person who makes himself look stupid....mostly. Well, this is due to the weirdness he shares, which leads to cyber bullying. P.S. Beware the chocolate ice cream!

Same here!

I don't think you need a game to snap a shot from. I think you can just create a scene and then snap a pic of it.

@Kravenwolf: I think people are out for Thanksgiving, and will probably not subscribe this week. May I'll try and win!

Hence perhaps why the deadline is now sitting two weeks away, on December 6th, instead of just one week. Although I'd say if people are getting time off and wanting to relax, there may be (hopefully), more entries!

Life would be much easier if I had the source code.

Hello Kravenwolf,

I'm still working on my scene and I believe that next week or earlier than this I shall be posting it here. I hope so.

Thank you.

Sincerely.

Hi guys. Had a bit of computer trouble the other day. I'll be replying to the emails from the winners of the last competion in a bit.

@Captain Coder, thanks, and yes; if you win or hit the runner up spot, you'll recieve your prize(s) via email.

@Vental, you don't need a WIP/game in order to enter this competition. You can whip up any small scene specifically for this comp. and then take a picture of it.

@Northern, looking forward to it. Thek will be the judge for this one.

@Braden 713, originally I had extended the deadline in consideration of the holiday, though two weeks will probably be the new extension for these competitions from here on out. Will hopefully encourage more people to jump in and give them a shot.

Quote: "this one is pretty much the same as the other one."

Originally, the theme for this competition was going to be "Winter", though I figured there wouldn't be many entries for that theme considering the lack of media available for a winter theme. Which is why I expanded it to any natural disaster, so just about any type of media would suffice while the winter theme is still there to use if anyone wants to gives it a shot. And unlike the previous competition in a world without people, this time around artificial light sources, fire, and any other traces of an active civilization are in.

Actualy im guessing it will become the oposite, 1 week is enough to make a screenshot and if it is 2 weeks people may lose intrest. But you can never know without trying

Well either way, the EAI prize contributions each comp. are coming out of my own pocket, so I can't afford to run these each week. Even moreso, if the interest dies down for these competitiona altogether.

@Slayer267, yes, a forest fire is fine.

@Bestorio, looks good. So far yours is the only entry. And if that's the case, you'll be cleaning house and taking both prize sets.

@everyone else, still another 5 days to go. I'll assume the lack of activity in this competitions is due to the holiday season, so the next one will not be put up until after New Year's.

Well isn't that nice. BlackFox posted a picture of Canada.

@Northern, I would title that picture "Too late to run, just enjoy the view!" That pic reminds me of Microsoft Flight Simulator.

For sure , "too late to run, just enjoy the view" it would be a good title as well. By the way, a dreaded view.

Just out of curiosity, if you do not mind, what features in my screenshot did remind you of Microsoft Flight Simulator.

As I returned from hospital, I will be able to judge on this competition. I thought, I couldn't, but got out of there in time.

Will do the judging tomorrow, as I need a little break from the most amazing breakfast I've ever had... (Picture included )

Alright, time for judging! I hope, everyone's OK with his rating.

Quick and dirty - The winner and runner up:

Winner(s): The Fox's
Runner up: Rolfy

OK, now on to the rating itself.

Bestorio:
This shot has potential, but there are some strange things about it. As it seems, there are cables hanging out of the wall. I don't think, that cables still hang in the hole, while the car blows a hole into the wall. The motion-blur makes it really intense, but then the atmosphere ruins it a bit. When a hurricane appears, it's raining, bad weather and so on. As your picture is titled "Moment of impact", I assume that it's just the moment, where the car hits the building.

The Fox's:
My favorite picture. Not because I like snow. For me, this picture really shows a really tragic disaster, that mother nature has sent to us. The shot is pretty good, but there are two flaws in the map itself: At the right of the picture you can see the end of the terrain - looks a little strange. Also there doesn't seem to be snow on some of the buildings. Sure, it's a little work to retexture everything, but that's not a big deal. The atmosphere is good and that's what counts.

Leongamerz:
That's a pretty nice shot, too. Like in Bestorio's screenshot, there are a few strange things. How is the street lamp so clean, compared to the rest? A clean-cut tree log in the middle of the street? The colors are OK, the bloom might be a little bit too much, the slight fog gives it a little more "mystery"-like atmosphere. You could also have worked on the glowing and flat grass. There are a few ways to make such things look good. For example not using sprites.

Northern:
I'm very sorry. I don't know what I don't like on that screenshot. Whether it be the perfectly round wave and it's mirrored texutre, or the skyscrapers, that aren't nearly as big as the street and even smaller than trees, or the people who all have the same position. All that points wouldn't really count, if the good weather wouldn't ruin the whole atmosphere. With such a colorful shot, the dramatic thing about the Tsunami isn't really visible.

Rolfy:
The Hurricane looks pretty good, although it could have used some particles around it. It just looks too clean. Also there again seems to be too good weather for it. I see, it's cloudy, but the skybox seems to be a little bit "not fitting" the Hurricane itself. There wouldn't be any holes in the clouds, that let the sunlight through. At least you used that to produce some pretty nice shadows of the debris, the Hurricane took. When I look at the houses, I only notice that the road ends right behind the second house on the right. A cow in the whirlwild would have made it.

The Zoq2:
OK, what do we have here?... The screenshot size doesn't fit the rules, it's 800x600, not 1024x768. With the rescaling, you could've made it a little better with some kind of "antialising" from the rescaling. Anyway, the shot looks solid, the sleeping bag seems to be floating. You might turn up the lightmapping settings next time. The lamp is completely clean, the kitchen is not complete, the two planks at the window are clipping through each other and the walls. The "Blizzard" doesn't really seem to be such a strong one - it's barely snowing outside!

OK, that's it! On to the next competition!

Greetings,
Jan

Hello everyone,

Congratulations to the winners of this competition BlackFox and Rolfy, amazing screenshots in the art work of both.

Also congratulations to Thek by the precise analysis of the all screenshots. Well done.

Actually in a hurry to deliver on time my photo to this competition I made a mistake on perspective scaling of the buildings closest to the road which I do not have noticed until I read Thek's analysis about my picture. I'm sorry for that guys.

To all other contestants congratulations as well, great work of you all despite the difficulty this subject (Natural Disaster theme) presents, (my opinion though).

That's it folks and until the next time.

Greetings.

I'm sorry to point this out and I assure you that's it not to be a troll/jerk but that's actually a tornado.
A hurricane would be MUCH more massive then that funnel cloud. However, I do agree that the sky is off-base to what you'd expect.

Good entries by all though! Nice little competition!

Congrats Mr Fox, let me know what you would like.

Actually its the tornado itself that lets the screenshot down, I got into a hurry to add to this comp and it was a last minute thing, the sky itself is as I often see pics of tornados, its pretty much the the case that these things appear without real warning and parts are therefore cloudy and overcast, I thought they were formed by differing areas of warm and cold air at height, hence you get differing areas of sky.....or um something like that

ASTEK, ah, I didn't know that a Hurricane is much bigger than a Tornado. I always thought it's all the same...

rolfy, I live in Germany, so there aren't any Tornados here. But for me, when the whirl drags the clouds with it, there are like many clouds around it. The sky doesn't ruin the picture, it just doesn't fit my imagination of a Tornado. The Tornado itself looks pretty fine, I think. It's a clean and good model. The texture makes it look a little bit "cartoony".

Greetings,
Jan
