Thought I'd come out of 'retirement' and put together a fairly simple game. This is a 4 player death match game. Currently no network support. It requires you all to huddle around a keyboard, a mouse, and a joystick in various strange control configurations. Might implement network support in the future. Basically it's gonna be a 2v2 or all against all frag fest in various non-scrolling 1 screen levels. I may also add support for 4 camera viewports, make the levels bigger and have 3rd person perspective.

Videos:
Carnage Weapons (4MB WMV)
Carnage - Gore (2.5MB WMV)
Carnage Early Gameplay vid (12MB WMV)
Carnage 4 Player vid (17MB WMV)

Amazing! It's great to see a 4 player game being made. The graphics are beautiful and the weapon variety looks great in the video.

One thing is that the floor texture of the top right room is too repetitive and tiled. Maybe dirty it up a bit? And the boxes in that same room are a little too perfectly aligned.

Will there be any physics? Something like kicking a box in front of a door while you make your escape.

Hey this looks awesome. And maybe I could help you with multiplayer?
I recently made a game with MikeNet but then i lost all the newest media and only got some older ones... and i stopped working on it for now.
But helping you make this game online-capable sounds quite doable

Hey cool!
Here are some ideas:

With the nailgun, can you make the nails stay longer?
And how about some physics (I know, that would be hard but really cool too!)

Nice

Jeff

Agreed with draknir_. I can see it working out in a very fun way. might consider getting some cheap gamepads for this - I can see it being hilarious if you take it Super Mario Bros.' path with overobvious kills.

Hmmm. I never thought of gamepads. Dont XBox ones use USB? Can they be connected up to the PC with a few downloadable drivers? Might be worth checking out.

Anyway, thanks for the comments guys. Unfortunately I'm working (on real employed paid work type work) late every evening, and on call/support every weekend until xmas, so progress will be slow on this. However, it's sufficiently finished so that I should get this done. More later.

Looks sweet. I don't have anyone to play with though. Having developed an offline multiplayer game or two, i get the impression that most people are in the same boat. And then you've got issues with keyboard clash probably, and the fact that mouse and keyboard controls are not equivalent- someone will hold an advantage.

Basically i reckon you should put in online multiplayer. It's not trivial though. Am trying to do this myself at the mo.

Screeny looks sweet, and from watching the vid it looks even better in motion. Great animation, and being able to vault low walls is very cool. The whole thing reeks of quality, and i feel you are on to a very good thing here. Would like to see you make a srolling 1-player (or 2 player co-op) game with this "engine". If i had your skills i'd be making alien breed!

Cheers for the comments. Latest updates:

Most of the way through the gore engine - blood splats from bullet wounds, pools of blood, blood drips down walls, players are knocked about and howl in pain. Currently working on the gib engine, so can create limbs and heads and other bits that fly around. Aiming to have many death animations.

The collision system detects the body zone, so head shots are possible allowing decapitations and 1 shot kills. Explosions have an epicenter and also a shrapnel based damage system, which is quite cool. Stakes stick into people.

I'll upload another vid soon, once the death animations are complete.

@ Mr Tank

I started a big scrolling game with this kinda engine a while ago. But it was just too much work for one man to juggle with real life, which is why I work on smaller games now. The WIP is here:
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=87956&b=8

I've made a simpler version of this game before. The keyboard locking isn't an issue as the controls are very simple, and the mouse has no advantage as it's not analogue (i.e. when you move the mouse right, it treats it as a keypress until you stop moving the mouse. Therefore it has no aim advantage). But the controls certainly aren't ideal.

However, the intention here was just to make a game for me and my mates to play. I'll release it as a 4-player-on-the-same-compo type game first, and then if it's well received, might try an online version!

Fallouts back .

Looking awesome like always. Its no Claymore Island... but still awesome .

I actually like the non-online direction for this. You could work this into a party game. Set it up so everyone uses a controller instead of one on the keyboard. Id see me playing this with some buddies friday night having good times, especially if it was a little bigger and supported wireless controllers.

Thanks for the comments chaps. Much appreciated. Yep, it's no Claymore Island, but it'll at least get finished! ... I hope.

Updates - Gore engine mostly complete. So I have a selection of death animations and dismemberment. Here's a vid of some chopping action.

it would be nice if the blood stayed a lil longer so there would be a gore fest, and will there be ragdoll?

The game doesn't use DarkPhysics, so there won't be ragdoll support. As far as I know, ragdolls still don't actually work in DPhysics anyway (limb limitations on single mesh objects).

Yo, Alfa X. I don't go on MSN very often, and don't really have much time for team work or anything like that (I hardly have time to make this game as it is)! What did you want to talk about?

My team and I are thinking in a commercial game with net play (Different from the Ultimate Apocalypse), and we see your abilities to fit well in our plans.

From your work we have seen you have talent in graphics and game design, and development. We want to make you an offer depending on your possibilities, to work together or paid.

Update - I put some more logic in for respawning and player controls, then me and a mate played for a bit. Here's a vid of some of the interesting cat and mouse battles.

Carnage Early Gameplay vid (12MB WMV)

@Alfa X - I have to be honest. It's unlikely I'll have time to work on any other games for a while. Do you have a WiP, or design document or anything like that? Or just currently an idea to form a team?

Awesome work man, I used to play and make this type of game all the type, it's bringing back some good memories

Did you happen to ever use DIV Games Studio? The DIV community was a hotspot for top down shooters IIRC.

@ Fallout: For now we are doing the design document, but our goal is very clear in what to have as a final product. We are beginning development like in three or four weeks.

If you want we can pay for your work, and if you don't have much time we need some key things that we hope don't take you a lot.

If you want you can work with us like in joint venture in this project, and we will have more aspects to discuss like property and so on.

Minor updates:
- Increased blood life and gore a little bit
- Tweaked some weapon balancing and effects
- Added reload animation, magazine size and ammo limits
- Added aiming smoothing to make precision aiming easier

More to come later. Will be testing 4 player later on, so will get some videos up.

@Alfa x - Sounds like a promising project mate, but to be honest, at this point in time I really wouldn't have time to work on anything else. Thanks for showing interest in my work though.
