Hello everyone, I'm back in the neighbourhood for a while. The film's thing is going great, I have a site that shows some of my stuff - http://www.ddrw.com - I've got 2 film series' going too, one of which should "launch" this month.

Dumbow & Cool: The game is getting a name change to Dumbow & Cool. Dumbow & Cool is a shareware 3D platforming game for 1 or 2 players: http://www.drewsgames.com/dac In line with a publishing deal I'm going back to Dumbow & Cool and doing more work on all aspects of it.

Anybody familiar with the original game, if you have any gripes with it that prevented you from buying, now's the time to speak up.

Features for upgrade

Level editor
Level count up to 100 levels
Mini games: go karting, and 2 others undecided upon

And lots of little smaller things too, but above are probably the biggest things I'm working on. I anticipate it will take 2-3 months of development: I've already been working on this upgrade since January so I'm quite far along already. In this thread I'll be posting screens, test programs for you all etc... so I can once again call on this community for a hand in making the game better.

And to get this show back on the road, a screenshot of the level editor, which is now getting pretty close to completion.

It automatically textures the Matrix, lets you place coins, platforms, enemies etc... (This screen is quite old)

Lookin good Drew;

The editor looks amazing
I'm really pleased that you managed to get a publishing deal

But:

I'm really sorry to say this, but I think the name change is absolutely ridiculous. I assume this is to avoid copyright issues with 'Dumbo', and was probably a term of publishing, but I seriously thought this was either some kind of joke or a really horrible mistype.

Is it not possible to change the game's name now you have a publisher? If we can suggest a worthwhile (and slightly more meaningful) name will it be considered?

Personally, I've always had trouble pressing the big red button on level 2. Both Dumbo(w) and Cool were too tall compared to the button, and it was difficult to get them to jump onto it. That's the only gripe I have gameplay-wise.

Once again, I'm sorry to bash the name-change, but I'm being totally honest as asked for (sort of)

Glad to see you posted this. and really Glad to hear about the publishing deal. But I have to agree with David R on the name change. Dumbow looks silly in spelling. Is there any other spelling you could use?

Also please send me an update soon with the fixed graphics bug and improoved controls at least. Or if you want I can wait till you're done to write it. Maybe the tgc will notice and do it themselves now that you've posted it agaain...

Update sound great though, so take you time with it.

Thankyou all.

Quote: "Dumbow looks silly in spelling. Is there any other spelling you could use?"

Well, her name has to remain as Dumbo, because the voice-overs call her that, and it can't be spelt Dumbo, because that's copyright infringement. If you can think of an alternate spelling to Dumbo that isn't Dumbow, I'd like to hear it. I rest my case etc.. If anybody dare suggests I redo the voice acting, I will come through the internet and kill them.

Bizar Guy, please check your inbox for the fixes you requested.

Got the e-mail, drew. Yeah, that mouse speed it pretty good, and the transparency problem is mostly fixed, but not entirely. One thing I noticed that you might want to fix though; when you pause the stud animations don't stop.

Though I prefer "Dumbo", and as long as she's not a flying elephant, how could that be copyright infringement???

That's weird, I haven't blinked for the last minute! Hmm...

Wow this looks awesome for only 1 days work Drew. The level editor will also expand the lifespan of the game greatly. These are some exciting updates that really enhance the game. I can see a "Dumbow and Cool Racing" game already.

Sure, I'll wait for the next upgrade.

Hmm, just played again, and I think you should add a bit of the water effect you have in the timed levels to the current water effect in the story levels. I think they would blend nicely.

Also, be careful with a carting game. If you make it too good, we'll demand you make a full game out of it for us.

Anyways, looks great, but try and make a final kart models resemble the characters special abilities, and consider adding a cart for a stud and maybe even lecture as well as dumbo and cool.

I heard someone hear suggest Dunbo as an alternative name. That by far looks and sounds the most natural.

Well it is a mini game man: don't expect too much of it in terms of different karts etc.. I wanted to add Studes, too, but Robert is having problems modelling it so it's not happening.

The water effect slows the main game down too much; it's fine for the time attacks with no scenery, but it brings the frame rate right down in story levels where I was struggling for speed anyway.

Dunbo is too masculine. It reminds me of the name Duncan. I hate the letter h, so Dumboh is out of the question too. Dumbow is how it stays, so just get used to it everyone.

The kart game looks like oodles of fun. Dumbow keeps the goofy friendly aesthetic, me gusta. What sort of a deal are you getting with the publisher?

@Bizar Guy
I remember a thread a while ago in which you said you had a site or something set up where you had reviews of games. Am I on drugs, or is that what you're talking about writing for Drew?

The publishing deal is a good one, that's all I'm saying right now because knowing my luck it'll fall through.

No Bizar Guy is going to write a review of the game for the newsletter because TGC are too busy to do it.

You're definitly on drugs.
I've only just sest up my first site, and I'm no where near rating games on it yet, if ever.
Review is for the tgc like drew said, unless of course they deside to do it themselves.

Edit:

Well, could you put it as a toggleable graphic option, for those of us with faster computers? Would only help make the game more awesome for those who have the better graphics cards, and it wouldn't hurt the lower end users that way.

Karting game progress
Have got 2 players going in the karting game now and up to 3 other AI racers!

Level editor progress
The level editor can now handle Matrices, Coins, Starting Points and Platforms (Studes and Traps to go). Not far yet!

New collision system?
I'm also thinking about going down the Nuclear Glory route for real sliding collision and stuff (both in Karting game, and in the main game itself) - It's probably a bit late to try and change the game's collision engine though... :S

More mini games planned
For one of my other mini-games, I'm going to make a 2D version of the main game, and for the other one, either a Worms style game with Studes or a dancing style game.

No I asked for extra time to make these changes, because once it gets published, there's no going back! In fact, the publisher wasn't too keen on me asking for extra time because they said it was 'good enough' at the moment

Wow, good job getting a publisher by the way. I tried for a few days when I was completing WordTrix, and I couldn't even find a good list of applicable publishers :-P This is inspiring for myself and no doubt for every one of us who are struggling away at our games!

heh, you know, if you have that really nice water effect as togglable, then it should fit in alright with the videos, Although I couldn't say for certain. Meh, whatever you do is fine.

Also, make sure that the mini games have to be unlocked. That's one of the things that makes them so appealing. Like say, there was an item that unlocked a specific mini game if you collected it in a level. If I'm correct, then there are four mini games planned, right? Time Attack, Cart Racing, 2D D&C, and Snake/Dance game. Well, you could hide the items that unlocked the mini games in four of the levels, specifically the second, third, fifth, and sixth (the first level and the train level wouldn't make much sense to add one to).
If you were to set it up that way, not only would the mini games themselves expand the play time, but so would the search for them. It would even mean that you could limit people playing the demo to only being able to unlock one mini game, without adding extra constraints.
Of course, if you were to hide the mini games inside the levels, you would have to make the levels repayable in case someone didn't get the mini game token (or whatever) the first time around. I really think you should make the levels re-playable, at least after you beat the main game... It's frustrating to have to start a new game if I want to re-play a level...

Edit: Now that you'll be getting D&C published, do you think you'll eventualy make D&C2?

I still don't plan on doing a D&C 2 unless it's going to be really worth my while (lots of money).

Yes, MilkPaton.com

I've sent it off to the publisher - Bizar Guy, if you check the usual download, there is now quicksaving when you quit the game (continue game puts you right back where you were) and spelling mistake corrections.

I'm working feverishly on the karting game and level editor, still.

Thanks Sunrise.

Joe Cooning, I think I've said it a couple of times already, I hate cell shading. I also think that it's a bit late to go back and "add" cell shading.

Bizar Guy: The upgrade is going to be a bit late You know me though, late is my style. The latest version which is already up has a new quicksave from menu option which you may find tasty. Those ghosting problems you spotted are gone too, I think, and the mouse sensitivity you said about has been fixed, too.

I thought I'd explain myself a bit,

As you may or may not know - I am finishing the second episode for The Milk Paton Show which is taking longer than expected. Secondly, I am finishing school this week and you can perhaps imagine how that takes up ones time.

Work still underway.

So far the game looks really neat. I can't wait to get my hands on it not many quality things such as this come from DarkBASIC. Also, can't wait for the next Milk Paton, either. Funny stuff.
