I've just received authorisation to announce a new two week mini competition. The competitions details will be announced on the 1st July 2009, and run until the 15th July 2009.

Judging will be handled on a community basis via votes, each entry will be assigned a number, a thread will be opened up, then each user will be allowed to vote for their favourite entry by typing that number onto a post (number only, no additional comments allowed, if you wish to dicuss entry's please do it in this thread). You will not be allowed to vote for your own entry.

The prize for this competition will be a $20 TGC voucher for the winner.

The theme for the competition will be announced on 1st July 2009.

This is the offical discussion thread, the offical announcement thread will be posted on the 1st. So you may talk here.

At first, I was jumping for joy when I saw this thread. But then I read:

Quote: "1st July 2009, and run until the 15th July 2009"

and said "There's no way I'll be able to make a game in 15 days! I'm still not done my game from the first competition!" I guess that's just 'cause I'm slow.

Anyway, good luck to the people who are actually competent at making games (i.e. the ones who'll enter).

r u kidding Herakles? >.> you can make a small game and just polish it rather than make a huge game and not be able to finish it for a long period of time. Limit yourself to something you know you can complete within the time frame.

E.g. my game was made in two full days of hard work. from morning to night lol

Yeah but you're obviously much more experienced than I am. Plus, I've got about four different things going on at once (not making games, just other stuff). I think the biggest game I could make in 15 days is a simple pong game.

hehehehehe. Now that I think of it, theres a very high chance I might be gone partying all that week. Which would stink, slightly.

Lol, since when did partying stink? The first is a while to wait but I should be up to it. Hopefully that will give my time to finish my current project.

Why are you guys assuming the competition is a game based one? these mini competitions can be absolutely anything, from making the best 3D model, Texture, shader, game idea, game plan. Etc.

It's my hope that these little side competitions will help encourage users to think about all the various aspects of game development, art, design, planning, etc. Perhaps even pick up tips from other members of the community.

I can only guess from that comment that it is in fact, not a game. Interesting...

Cool. I could certainly do a model, texture, or game idea in that amount of time. Maybe even a shader (although, the only shader i've ever written just puts a simple texture on the object).

I would REALLY like one of these competitions be about making a shader , cause i've never really gotten into them that much, but I'd definitely require about a month+ to learn.

3D modeling i've just started really getting into so i wouldn't mind giving that a go .

Josh Mooney, if it's special effects, i have a great idea! that isn't hard to aquire providing i know the correct maths

It's easier than you might think. I learned how to apply a simple non shaded texture to an object in just 3 hours, having no prior experience in HLSL or any similar language.

A tech demo would be nice for a compo, it could incorporate a couple of those different ideas.

If you see a thread of mine in GDT, please don't expect it to go anywhere.

Unfortunately between the 1st and 15th of July I’m Away on holiday for the first week, working constantly the next, then have T in the Park (Rock/Pop festival) to go to over the weekend will be coming home on the 13th and don’t yet have my shifts for the 14th-15th so possibly (if those are days off), I could have a whole 2 days to contribute to this Mini compo but might not if I have to work.

Sounds intriguing and if I can, I will enter.

@ Brick Break: Remember no project is a failure, as long as you are always learning for the next time. As Napoleon Hill said -

Yes it does, it says:
Quote: "Prizes cannot be awarded to employees, agents, contractors or families of The Game Creators Ltd"

1) An employee is someone who is EMPLOYED by TGC. In other words, someone to whom TGC pays a salary
2) An agent is someone who buys or sells for somebody else in exchange for a commission
3) A contractor is someone who is paid to perform specific tasks for TGC
4) You know what a family is!

So is BiggAdd paid by TGC? No, so he can't be any of the first three, and I'm pretty sure he's not Lee's evil twin brother

I don’t see any problems with MODs entering any of the community competitions, they are as much a part of the community as anyone else, and by definition, probably contribute more. Good luck BiggAdd and everyone else who enters.

Would it be possible in the next compo to use 23:59 or 00:01 instead of midnight to reduce the chance of any confusion?

I'll lock the submission thread when the time is up. That should be pretty clear to everyone.

So if submission thread = open, you can post an entry. If it isn't, then you won't be able to post an entry.

Better work quickly if you want to get any other entries in. I'm quite dissapointed with only posts.

43 games where entered into the last competition.

Banners are alot easier to make. It's amazing what 250 free gc store points will do for a competition isn't it? lol
