@Bloodeath: Yes, it can. Future enhancements will include the user's ability to choose protection levels. The settings will be saved in the encrypted file. Just to be clear, the right-click mouse button is not disabled. The right-click Key on the keyboard is.

@slayer: It's a protection system. Vishnu is a protection system. So I'd say yes. But I don't know how S4 coded his, so I'm sure they're quite different in design and operation.

The interface looks good. The features are good as well.
As for the operation and security, well, can't say without testing it. Any chances of a Beta or trial?

Just so people know, Phoenix isn't in competition with Vishnu. His product in later versions, is going to connect to a server for authentication and this is something Vishnu will never do.

As you see Phoenix gui is much more robust and offers more options. People complained when there were 5 buttons on Vishnu. Our target was easier operation.

Phoenix is also going to be in another price bracket to reflect the servers needed for verification and extra features.

These two products are not in competition, and I just want to quell any background talk before it got started. Phoenix is for the high end user.

Dave perhaps you could tell them the projected price of Phoenix so they can better understand my post.

Hi Loc, thanks for posting and for pre-clarifying our positions on this.

I am updating the price line in the first post.

To all: Phoenix will be high-end and, like loc said, will have the option for you to require online authentication/validation from your customers via a secure online connection. Similar to Steam in concept, however once your customer validates the software, they will not need a persistant internet connection to play.

Thanks again loc, I really don't want folks to think we're competing here.

Online authentication is a little overkill for FPSC games, unless I am wrong here (and I think I am), and Phoenix can package other things besides FPSC games.

In any case, this would obviously be something pretty much secure as they come and for those wanting to commercialise their games $35 isn't very much.

Looks good so far. I will have to agree with Filya on the overkill.
Even though say Counter Strike is an online game, I hate connecting to steam just to play it. (Or halflife 2 for that matter).

Anyway good luck, and I hope you purchased your license of ZipForge or else you will run into trouble (legally).

@Filya: Phoenix can be used to package any game. As far as overkill look at it this way: You spend up to a year working to make your FPSC game the best you can. You hope to go commercial with it and hope to get at least $10/copy for your hard work. Online authentication to *help* fight piracy is the cheapest and most secure way for an indie to go. Thanks again, filya

@Mickm: If you choose to have your customers authenticate online, they only have to connect to the internet the first time they install it or re-install it. After they authenticate, the program does not need an internet connection. Is connecting once really that much of a hassle for your customers? Odds are, they will not buy your game in a store, but rather online. So you know that have access to the net in some way. I'm working with the ZipForge developers to work out some features. Nuff said there. Thanks for the comments

so if the game crashes and you do ctrl+alt+del nothing happens so you HAVE to restart the entire computer?

and knowing that your save game has just been coppied is not neccesary! I dont want people to be told that everytime they leave my game!

and whats to stop people just uploading the key file so other people can play the game for free?

I suppose I'll awnser for him...since I am helping him out, anyways - DF2 is being made in FPSC, while DF2: Quest is being made in Torque. Not sure how DF2: Quest is coming along cause I don't have torque so I haven't been helping him with that one.

The key file doesn't stop peer2peer piracy, it is part of the file protection system. The validation system prevents what you just asked but not with a key file.

question:does this program solve the problem where a computer has to have been exposed to the computer before it will run i had problems with this and had to give refunds

I just looked at the price and was rather shocked to see $35 for basic,but if it protects professionaly i wouldn't mind paying $50 actualy.

That's not a problem with Phoenix. Shouldn't be a problem with Vishnu either. Probably it's the user's computer because the protection system doesn't alter the FPSC content in any way.

Phoenix Game Protection
Update: RC1

I'm getting very close to a release for Phoenix. I'm considering doing an Early Adopter program for those interested. It will be a release candidate, however it will be fully functional and stable. The cost will be $25 and EA purchasers will get the Pro upgrade for free. Also, I will be releasing a game demo with Phoenix protection later in the week.

Thanks to everyone for your interest, comments, compliments, suggestions and support.


These images show a few changes in the Phoenix Game Setup program. The key generator has a dynamic multiplier and letter combinations added for stronger key sequences. The encrypted key file now has stronger encryption and an even stronger version will be in RC2 or sooner.

In this latest update, you can choose to see the plain text key or not. The advantage of seeing it is so you can record it and open the game zip directly for troubleshooting purposes. When "Yes" is selected, you cannot see the input variables. When "Yes" is not selected, you can see the input, but not the Plain Text Key. This is just for added security.

i appreciate this product as i go to a computer based school and there are many petty hackers...that and everyone would just burn a game and give it to a friend with the serial, but the online validation is an answer to my prayers!

I have the Phoenix Game Protection launch program *ready* for public beta. It's very secure, even against elite haxors. The RC1 beta game level I'm releasing will be public, but limited to those people who have already posted here. This is my way of thanking you for your interest.

Send me an email stating your TGC forum nickname if you want to test the protected level and I'll send you a link. Again, if you have not already posted in this thread, then you do not qualify for the beta download.

You may send the email now, but the download link may not be ready until late tomorrow. As a Beta tester, it's your job to do your best to access the game files and copy them to another folder. If you can do this, I want to know how. Just keep in mind that no software is 100% bulletproof. Phoenix is designed to keep an honest person honest, a curious person confused and a hacker very busy.
