That's pretty cool that you can set the health hud to reflect or not.
I'd have it reflect

I'm already going into a denialistic stage waiting for FPSC X10 to come out. Hopefully within the next 2 months

no you misunderstood me, i meant that the health bars are completely optional, set per character to on/off and are customizable

more pics hopefully soon, though some texture variations are dependant on opacity mapping which is yet to go back into the engine

I would of done the models for dx10 with model items that was separate, then one can just alpha them for variations, you could do that with the ut4k models, some parts of the model was not attached to the main model, things like ammo pockets or face masks or pony tails etc, you could either skin them or alpha bits out so it didn't show and change the model, that would work very well for the dx10 fpsc models, that way one can get loads of different model types from the basic mesh.

@ fallen one

yeah that would be cool, but it could get messy, i do plan to use (and already have) the opacity mapping to 'remove' some elements of the model for more unique variations, though using the same mesh

@ Bloodeath 666

i appear to be in the credits of FPSC X10 under artist so i guess it will be a stock character

here's progress on another new character in the works, half way through the texturing (lower legs and top of head....thing not started)

(some might have seen an earlier shot of it in my 3d chat thread, i might be keeping the human-ish hands, as they just look fit for holding a weapon )

perhaps too much inspiration though, as the fantasy genre seems to be the only thing littering my portfolio

Model Pack 7 is already decided and ready for preorder, if you read the newsletter.

Jon, you are amazing. That model makes me want to rethink my life. It looks fantastic. I would love to fill that thing full of bullets. lol Hopefully we get headshots implemented. It would be all the more fun to have that guy's head explode.

you could have a glass dome helmet that exploded I guess. Its a nice looking monster, very useable, I hope Bond puts a shoe on that fat man model with the tech skull thing, that throwing the whole thing off and cutting the skinning options way down.

Your marine character I really like Id like to see a version with all the face visable, I thought the first version made him a little turtleish, like he had no neck, the alternate version I like, a third version with a full face would be great, that way we can easilly have a squad of them and have them look different, kind of like with GOW marines that have slight variations.

How long does it take you to make a full character?

@ Inspire

thanks!

@ fallen one

making a version with all the face visible would require editing the mesh, so it cant really be a texture variation, but im starting to get some doubts about that neck thing, realising just how much character the lower face can show (anger etc.)

im gonna whack up a quick mockery to see what this could look like, I'd like to know if it bothers enough people and that they'd much much much much prefer a whole face. (could just be annoying re-assigning vertex weights over again)

as for making a full character, the model, normal map and texture usually takes about a week if im not lazy, and dependant on the complexity of the model time can increase.

But a lot of the time i drift in and out of certain projects, such as this alien character, which i must have modeled quite a while back and am only just getting back to it, plus i have the fantasy model pack up my sleeves as well.

@fallen one: Geez, could you try and not mention the "problems" with bond's model again? I've read your complaints three times already.

@Jon: I like the alien character, it looks awesome.
Although the hand don't bother me much, you could try alienifying it by adding claws and/or chaging the skin color to something more like that on the face. Other than that, splendid work.

Roger Wilco-
I make points on models, like the face on the marine and the shoe on the fat guy as I look at it from a perspective on how much use it can get, the more a model can be edited the better, there will be a number of models for the DX10, and from that one needs to get the most use out of them as possible, so I belive its a critical issue. From what is released users will have to make what they need from that, either that or make your own, I don't think a lot of fpsc users are zbrush/mudbox users, or pay someone to make them, so what is released must be as useable as possible, it is an important issue.

Jon-
Your working times are pretty much the same as other modelers I know, seems a standard timescale, Id love to get more into modelling but I'm so damn busy, there are some super tools nowadays Id love to get into, I look forward to seeing what you come up with for the dx10 fpsc, the new models are really helping to make fpsc dx10 stand out.

i would if i could but i wouldn't because i cant.

i decided I'd stay with the original head for the juggernaut, as it just means reworking pretty much everything, including shifting UV's and retexturing quite a bit.

as for the hands on the alien guy, im taking another go at that.

Finished the alien character, in game and working fine, just creating a new animation set for it now

TEMPORARY SPECULAR MAP MOCKUP!!

edit:

decided not to change the hands, i know they'll look better with different ones, but i think I'm too far in now to change, and they don't look 'that' out of place

lol!

i have to try that, even if it doesn't work!

of course, that is when the right 'action' is available in the engine.

@ trinity pictures

haha, thanks, i don't think that is much of a bother. Plus, such a wide open stance portrays dominance

I'm sure they will be avalible (not for free) for the current FPSC, but they will not look as awesome and shiny as they do in x10.

its having some down time...too long me thinks, i wonder whether they cancelled my hosting, i was getting it free after all as a gift from the admin

oh well, i hope its up soon, i hate re-uploading sites and moving servers

anyway,

a more sorted out specular map (including the self illumination for the lights) , may have some extra work to it but it looks nice, also one texture variation for this thing:

i know that you guys probably want some different screenshots showing something other than a ceiling'less room with water and a few boxes, I'm not really the best level designer to be honest, ha ha

That's awesome. Those aren't the gun models that come with FPS Creator x10 are they?

You would think that their arm would get tired holding the gun like that.

wow, that hosting is cheap, but they seem very 'new' and i seem to get an error when using the site to find my domain

the gun model is the blaster from the normal FPSC, and i don't think it'll get that tired holding it, its classed as a pistol after all

Bah, who cares about the environment, this model is friggin' awesome.

Btw, I must ask, how on earth did you learn to texture like that? Or did you use photo references from the aliens you abducted last month?

thanks, but Ive found these guys, who seem very reliable and very cheap as well:

http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Hosting;jsessionid=EE85CC8677E9A601D19455EDFB0C5E7E.TC60b?__frame=_top&__lf=Static

problem is, with their UK site, the specs are ridiculously downgraded compared to the US packages, which sucks.

US Home package:

120GB Space
1,200GB bandwidth

only $4.99 a month, which is cheap as chips for the UK, however:

UK Home package:

1.5GB space
20GB bandwidth

for quadruple the price a month? (around £10/$20ish)

damn you Americans and your freedom! no wonder the world hates you!! j/k

im still gonna try with the American hosting, shouldn't be a problem paying with paypal eh.

Quote: "how on earth did you learn to texture like that?"

its not actually that much of a deal, a lot of detail is made by separate overlay layers, whereby if you were to disable them all, it would look like a sludge of paint

Ive been meaning to do some short picture tutorials on texturing, need to get my site back up first.

thanks for the comments guys
