I think it's absolutely unfair how you have the ability to change your topic name according to the latest update

Besides that, this is looking very, very cool. Keep up the great work mate.

Thanks for all of the nice comments!

Me =

Well, here is a new pic. This will give a better idea of how the model's face will look once it has all of the texture parts applied to it. I have only created one texture to use (for now) for each of the mouth, cheeks, and chin parts, but at least there is something there to show now. The lips were a bit of a pain to get working right and looking nicely. They use the mouth color to help figure their coloring.
Next up is making the mesh modifications to those areas...

If this was put into a plugin, then this would be absolutely essential for the next group of newbies with the "I'm gonna make the next AWESOME MMORPG!" craze.

5 stars from what I've seen so far.

Out of curiosity, how's the poly-count on those models? It doesn't look very high, but with the level of detail on the head, I have to ask.

The model shown is 2050 polys.
The total will vary depending on the options that are chosen but should stay somewhere between 2000-2500 polys. I'm not "watching" the count as I create new media, but I am trying to be sensible about where I use them. The head/face definitely does contain a lot more detail. This is to support full facial animation (which I can't wait to work on more and show off ).

@ Ron,

All looking superb. WHEN (as in, I believe it will be, I am a believer...) this is released it will take matters forward (for the 3D modelling backward like me) massively in DBPro and generally...

Yay!
All of the facial resizing options are now complete. I could possibly add some more later, but for now it is plenty. The mouth options were a PAIN to do. I had some trouble getting the teeth to resize according to the rest of the mouth.

I also have eyebrows added to the face now.

The next thing for me to tackle is to start adding a couple of hair options. At some point, I may break off to work on some of the facial animations. I can't wait to show off how that looks!

After I get a few hair parts added, then I need to start working on body options again. There is a LOT to do yet, but I am making really good progress.

Well, here is a new Screen shot to show off the eyebrows.

Sorry for not replying sooner. I've been busy.

Quote: "...what clothing armour options are there intended for first release?"

The first release will probably include some standard everyday clothes: Jeans, shorts, dress clothes, T-shirts, etc....

Quote: "and the male model only?"

Yes. To make a female version of 3DCM, I will pretty much need to start completely over with the media generation. So, instead of delaying the release to include both, I'd rather get the male model version done first. Then I'll look at a female version.

Quote: "and update - howzit going>?"

Good. I've been working on a bunch of different little things. First, I was working on some hair options. Then I worked on some changes to the GUI. Then I started working on some facial animation stuff. Now I am working on restructuring how media is stored so it can be added to and accessed easier. There really isn't anything "new" to show off right now though. I'll have some now "eye-candy" updates soon.

Lots
Hair changing works nicely now. I have all of the media organized MUCH better now. I have body structure (skinny, average, muscular, large) changing done now. I am currently working on body part scaling. When that is all done, I'll put some pants on him and put together a new video.
Things are progressing very nicely. I couldn't be happier with the amount that I have been able to get done in the past couple months!

Quote: "will it tie with DarkVoice?"

Yes. It should tie perfectly with DarkVoices.

Quote: "will there be facility to 'glue' objects to the 3dcm character in development ie. sword, gun, armour?"

I haven't really thought about that. I guess it could be usefull. I'll have to have a look at doing something like that.

Hey this is looking quite good! Just a few quick questions though,

Is it possible to import your own textures? Or will you have it so that we have to buy the latest addon packs (For clothing I'm talking about, would be so cool if we could add our own clothing texture)

Will the model have pre-configured animations? Or will we be able to make our own?

Also out oh shear curiosity what are you programming this in? C++? DBPro? Something else?
Thanks!

You can not make your own media that can be used within 3DCM. It is too complicated of a process. I would have to make some kind of editor to do so. However, you could just export you model and make your own modifications to the texture that is created. I would encourage you to do that to add your own little details to further make your character "unique". You will end up with a very good base to take things even further if you choose to do so.

Quote: "Will the model have pre-configured animations? Or will we be able to make our own?"

The model WILL have pre-configured animations. Right now I have all of the animations that are included with FPSC. I will add more over time. 3DCM will not have any kind of animation editor built in to it (at least for now! ). Again though, you are left with a model that you could load into another app that you could add your own animations to.

Quote: "Also out oh shear curiosity what are you programming this in? C++? DBPro? Something else?"

Hehehe. Actually it is quite the combination of DBpro, Visual Basic and C++. The main guts of the program is written in DBpro. The GUI is written in Visual Basic (which talks to the DBpro exe). I've also written a dll in C++ to add some functionality to DBpro to help with funtionality that is currently not possible in DBpro. It is an intersting MIX!

Here is a new movie. It shows some further face changing options, a couple of hair options, body structure changing and scaling.

Things are moving along nicely. The structure of just about everything is now done. Most of the remaining work is media creation.

Enjoy!

When it is done
I have no idea when that will be. Things are going really well right now. Hopefully I can keep up with the pace that I am currently working at. I'm not going to guess at a finish date though. My last guess was June... of 2006! Since then much has changed in this project and I had a few other projects in between (Enhanced Animations, the DB Classic update, and a few other minor things that no one knows about). So your guess is as good as mine. Watch this thread and make your own assumptions about how close I am to completion.

Engineering/programming.

Back on topic:
Things are still progressing nicely! I am currently working on getting the GUI portion of the clothing changing options implemented with the main engine. So far so good. After that, I will be concentrating on media creation. I got a new Wacom tablet for Christmas that I have been wanting to use but have been too busy writing code. I'm looking forward playing with it.

@Ron,

I could be wrong here, but it looks like this tool will be pre-production only (ie, you'll need to fully build/contort/clothe models up-front and load them as static entities as-is into a game engine). Do you have any plans to moving this over into something that could be used in (say for example) a character creation screen so that players could customize their own avatars?

Looks awesome by the way, can't wait to see the clothing options - well done!

Nothing more to show at the moment. I've been busy with my "real" job over the past 2 weeks and haven't had a lot of time to work on things. I have kept things moving, just not at the rate that I had been earlier. Things are settling down at work now though, so I should be able to start hitting things pretty hard again soon.

The next thing that I will be digging into is creating all of the skin textures. The ones shown so far are mostly filler. I hope to greatly improve the quality of what has been shown so far. I've been talking to a couple of people about possibly helping me in this area but I want to make another attempt at trying to do it myself.

Let this be a reminder to DO BACKUPS!
I've been fighting issues with my PC for the last few days. I've had to do a couple of restores from backups to get things straightened out. Luckily, I lost nothing. I've learned my lesson the hard way before. Remember to back-up your work! It disappears very easily, usually without warning! It is a pain to do sometimes but when you run into problems it makes it all worth it.
Needless to say, I've made NO PROGRESS the last couple of days. Still, it is a lot better than what could have happened.

Quote: "Almost forgot about WolfExtra - how did that end up? Could it be released in it's current form or with a future release of EnAn?"

It was left off wherever the last post in the "WOLFextra" thread left off. There were a couple of useful commands (I can't even remember what the commands were). There isn't a release needed though. It can be downloaded from the thread. I doubt I'll be working on it anytime in the near future. I'm way too busy with 3DCM (and fighting my PC) at the moment!

I use a separate SVN server down in my basement with UPS, heavy-duty surge protection, and tape-backup. Here's another warning to people - doing large-scale development without Subversion is like trying to get all the way through Half-Life 2 on 1 life. If you don't have Subversion, I strongly recommend it -- and learn how to use it

Ron, would you ever be interested in lending a hand with the character creation system in a small MORPG? World of OMEN sure could use customizable characters

That is EXACTLY what I use. Every once in a while I also copy the backup to my home desktop for extra safety.

I'll have to look into that. I've never really found a need for anything like that though (so far).

Sorry for the delay in my reply....

I've been *trying* to make progress. Unfortunately, my laptop is not allowing me. I've had a combination of Windows issues and hardware failings that have made me spend much more time trying keep my computer running than actually using it. So, last night I broke down and ordered a new laptop.

In the midst of all of my computer woes, I've been trying to improve the base UV mapping of the character. So far, so good. It has just been a slow process.

I'll soon be making another trip to Norway, so I'll be away for a week. I'll also be trying to get all of the software that I use running on my new laptop (which has Vista on it instead of XP). So, I don't expect to make much progress the next couple of weeks. What can I do though? Life happens.

@ Ron,

Howz yer laptop?

This has to be the one biggest addon for DBPro for a loafer like me - I have any number of add ons to help with terrain, sounds, collisions etc. to make life easier. There currently is no other alternative to 3dcm though...

I have milkshape and poser and some other free 3d utilities but, let's face it, I am no 3d modeller...

On that note, how goes development? screenies? vids?

New laptop is nice. I'm loving it actually. It's Vista instead of XP, so it took some time to get everything that I need running on it properly (or find replacements). Now, if I could just get some time to actually WORK on stuff! I'll be camping this week, then I'll return for a couple of weeks, then be back in Norway (again) for another week (....at least). I don't expect to really get things in motion again on this project until August. I'm sure I'll get some time in between, but probably not much.

Hello Duffer

I got the new UV mapping complete. Things are MUCH better now. There are a minimum number of seams now. The only problem is that this is also making me re-do all of my textures. Actually, that is a good thing though. I am taking my time on them and doing it right.
I'll be leaving for Norway again soon and be gone for about 2 weeks this time. So, I don't expect to get much more done for a while.
