Wow, I have only just read this thread for the first time and I've gotta say that it's looking fantastic so far!

I'm not so good at modeling in 3D, and just haven't managed to figure out character creation (modeling, bones, rigging) at all... so a program like this would allow me to finally create the games I've been wanting to for a few years. Good luck with it

A question if I may: how will exporting and editing the character in an external program work? I'd basically want to do something like:
- create a character in 3DCM
- export it (as a .x I guess)
- load it into Blender, Milkshape, 3DS, whatever..
- remove the character's head, replace it with a pineapple or a fish or something (..um.. yes I'm serious.. heh)
- re-join the pineapple/fish/whatever as the character's head
- animate the bones of the character
- save it back out as a .x and use it in DBPro

Would something like that work?

Choinkees,
Sorry I missed your post. Yes. I guess you could so any of those things. This will just export a model. If you want to open it up in a 3d Modeling app and replace the head with a pineapple, there is nothing stopping you.

Duffer,
I am still working on new textures. No newsworthy updates yet.

A lot has happened in the past month on this project!
I am working very hard to both improve upon everything that has been seen so far -AND- actually finish. I think I will soon be locking this thread and starting a new one.

Here are some of the things currently happening on the project:
-The new UV mapping has made a BIG difference in quality. There are few seams now and all blends together well.
-New base textures have been redone for the entire model.
-Almost all face textures that will initially be included are almost done. This includes approximately 10 textures for each part (forehead, nose, mouth, chin, eyes, cheeks, eyebrows). I should finish this part tonight.
-I have completely re-written the way that I create textures that can be used on the model. Things are MUCH simpler now. Everyhing is pretty much done right from GIMP. This has really made creating textures quicker. This will also help if I choose to have others create textures for me. I would now be able to easily convert textures for use with 3DCM.
-I have completely re-written my coloring routines. Before, I would basicly turn my texture into a grayscale image and color it according to the skin/hair/etc. I now take into account color differences on the base texture. This offers a MUCH better look.
-I have completely re-written the way I have textures for different body parts blend together. I used to have some separation between each part that was just filled with the skin color. This is no longer necessary. The textures now all blend together nicely.
-This one is BIG. I have written code to generate normal and height map textures (I may still include specular maps too). The code for this is done, but it needs tweeked a bit. I have some further testing to do with all of this, but things look great so far.

The next thing that I will be doing is creating more texture options for the body. Once that is done, I will be working on creating a bunch of hair styles, then some basic clothing options. I then have to write my exporter. After that, things should be close!
If I am able to keep progressing like I have been over the past month, it will still take me a few months to get close to completion. I would love to say that things will be close by the end of this year, but don't hold me to that! One thing is for sure, there will be NO MORE major redesigns. That is what has been pushing this project back again and again (although I do not regret how much this has improved the quality of the output). I can now see a light at the end of the tunnel. It is full speed ahead until I get there

@ Ron,

This is all excellent news.

Will wait for the stream of screenies when they become available.

In meantime, with clothing options, any chance of rpg style stuff?

Also, what formats for export of objects? .x I presume? Any others? (no worries if not, just .x will be all I need!).

Wow, that's some pretty impressive progress!

It must be at a point now where it's kinda fun to use, and really hard to draw the line as to where you stop adding new stuff rather than going "this is great, but maybe I'll add just one more little bit to it"

Sometimes I wait to release information UNTIL I get the next bump from Duffer. j/k

Here is a screen of some characters that have been exported with 3DCM and loaded into DarkShader with a normal shader:

Things are still going well on this project. I've hit a couple of speed bumps in the last couple weeks, but things should start moving at a good pace again soon. I'll post more info soon!

Thanks for the compliments guys.

This IS still being worked on. It has just been slow going for the last month. I am going to start looking for a good 3D modeler/texture artist to work with on this. I think that is the only way I will ever finish!

Just seen this thread - and the product looks like just the sort of thing I need.

Quote: "I think that is the only way I will ever finish!"

What exactly needs to be done before you release this?

I think most potential users here would be more than happy with a fully functioning version that might be upgraded quite frequently (at least in its early days/months).

I realise "fully functioning" begs the question somewhat.

However, perhaps we can help focus your mind on the important things.

Perhaps you could list what you think is missing - and we can respond with our comments?

Green Gandalf,
Thanks for the interest!

The programming is pretty much all done. There are a couple of small things to finish off and add some polish, but nothing that would really hold me back from releasing soon. The main thing that is taking so long is media creation. I am *capable* of doing it (and making it look good) but I am slow at that type of thing. That is why I am interested in looking for help from a good artist.
I would LOVE to release earlier with the PROMISE of many free updates, but don't feel real comfortable with doing that. I'd rather provide something that is worth it's value from the start. I would still do many free updates. It's just that if anything ever happened that I could no longer continue, my customers got everything that they paid for.
I will try to make a list of the media that I would like to provide in the first release. It isn't a whole lot, and I am slowly chipping away at it.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll be interested to see what media you need.

I'm not an artist but might be able to help with seamless textures, heightmaps and normal maps constructed using Perlin noise - useful for things like skin and for giving other textures fine detail.

Well, progress continues....

Since finishing the newest version on Enhanced Animations (version 1.6), I've been spending as much time as possible on 3DCM. Things are moving nicely again. I redid how some of the mesh stuff worked internally. I also have the models exporting with animation now. Currently I am working on Hair options. I'd like to include 15-20 different hair styles initially. Right now I only have about 6 done. I'll post some new screens of the hair options soon.

Maybe I'll put together a video of a character animating to show how things look!

Thanks for the comments guys!

Quote: "are the characters going 2 be animated (bone animation)?"

Yes. The exported character models are fully rigged for bone animation and so far include the animations for FPSC. More animations are planned in the future.

Quote: "What specifically needs doing Ron? I may be able to offer some help when I clear my plate."

Mainly, I just need to keep creating more media! I've been back and forth about looking for help. I've gone as far as talking to a couple people about it. I'm having a hard time deciding what to do though. I would really like to be able to complete the core included media myself, then look for help with addon packs. This would give me a good way of being able to pay people for their work. Right now things are progressing nicely (again) with the core media which makes me feel ok about finishing it myself. If that changes again, I will definitely look to outsource some of it!

Well, since I posted last, I've made some more good progress. I have completed most of the coding things that needed finished. There is very little left to do from a programming standpoint now. I have also completed a couple more hair options. I'm starting to get a lot better with hair textures. I'm considering going back over the firt couple to touch them up a bit.

Just to be nice I would throw in the work for free. Freelance work has been pretty scarce lately but the only thing i'd expect from you is to allow me to put the priorities in any paid work that comes my way. If you need to email me any details, go to my poorly designed, unfinished site and email me and i'd be glad to help mate.

Hi Ron,

Add me to the list of people watching for a release of 3DCM. It will save me so much time, I will definitely be buying it.

I was wondering one thing, you mentioned you are including a lot of facial details for facial animations, have you thought about adding extra detail to the hands? For my project ideally I need characters with 5 fingers, each with 3 bones, on each hand. I don't know if many other people would want this added detail but it would make the characters much more accessible if they could do sign language etc. I am using data gloves and need my character to match my own hand movements.

Krisper,
Currently, there are 2 bones per finger in the hands. I figured that was enough detail for most uses. I could look at adding a set of more detailed hands. I don't think it would be that complicated to add.

Oolite,
Sorry I have not contacted you yet. Things have been at a standstill for the last couple weeks with some personal stuff. I'm hoping to get things moving again soon!

Duffer,
I've been working on the authentication system, and the way media is packed/unpacked and such. I have to get this all working nicely so I can easily distribute media updates and also add additional content packs. It is an intersting (ok... *different*) thing to program and also the LAST programming hurdle remaining!

@ Ron,

Love the emphasis on the word LAST.... know I've said it before, but this utility, even in first release, will make life so so much easier for crud modellers like me...

Couple this with some of the excellent terrain plugins and utilities and it almost leaves no excuses left for the likes of me when trying to put together a half decent little game...
