Hello!
Now that the newsletter has been released, the new competition can finally get going!

From the newsletter:

Quote: "
The 3D Chat board has always been a place for great mini competitions, with participants eager and ready to mash together the finest polygon structures for the praise and glory of their fellow members. Those who managed to pry their eyes away from the fuzzy, basking glow of Geek Culture to take part in the last few competitions have done their forum proud, and will be lavished with ale and coffee icons for all eternity.

Unfortunately, your newly appointed 3D Chat Moderator is not amongst the honour of these gallant few. Alas, I was lured away by the dreaded Geek Culture board, and tumbled majestically into the world of 2 Dimensions.

But I have set out to redeem myself, with some excellent new additions to the forum! Thanks to the coding prowess of Paul Johnston, there is now a new Awards system for the 3D Competitions! This means you can formally boast your talent across the forums with three new awards to be won.

They are as follows:

3D Champion3DMaster - Champion awarded to the overall winner in the competition, an entry which displays both modeling and texturing excellence.

3D Best Model3DMaster - Best Model awarded to the runner up who demonstrates the finest modeling skills in the competition.

3D Best Texture3DMaster - Best Texture awarded to the runner up who demonstrates texturing wizardry in the competition.

The awards will cling to your Avatar until the results of the following competition are announced. So to keep your award, you must defend your honour in battle once again!

The theme of this month's competition (Courtesy of fellow Moderator MikeS) is "Alter Ego". We want you to design, model and texture an alter ego of your favourite villain or hero from a game or movie. You could dazzle us with a terrifyingly evil Companion Cube, or inspire us with a pink Darth Vader; the choice is endless. As long as you create an "Anti-Character", the decision is yours.

The competition will begin on the 1st of May and end on the 31st of May (Due to the early release of the newsletter, you have a few more cheeky days to get started)

The competition thread will appear in the 3D Chat board before the competition begins. Good Luck and Happy Modeling!"

So that is it! New awards and new theme! Hopefully you are excited about this competition as I am!

Any questions and your WIP screenshots go in here please!

EDIT : Alter Egos can be made from Films, Games, Cartoons, Comics and Books.

Cheers,
BiggAdd

I'm guessing I'll be the first one to post a W.I.P shot! Here's the start of my basemesh.
Now, the torso I actually had made before, well, yesterday, as an example for the Samurai thread, but I used it for this guy since it just speeds things up. Hopefully that's allowable seeing as everything else will be made with this competition in mind.

EDIT: Updated the screenshots a bit.

Edit: Are we allowed to do characters from books and Comics aswell if a reference such as their description or an image of them from comic is given?

Little Bill, if you experiment with the different methods of modelling, you can find what works with what for you. For instance I enjoy working from a plane and vertexes. on characters, and working with vertexes and cubes for guns

well, i do agree with Little Bill, a little bit more variety at what to make would be nice, like, objects, a weapon competition? a city competition? who can make the sweetest city? you got my point.

Variety? What are you even talking about? This is the first competition in a while that has featured characters. Just because you've not been in them does not mean that they haven't existed.

I agree with Alucard; just because you can't model characters doesn't mean that the competitions are lacking variety. The last compo that featured anything character-like was the one many many months that Jon made his cool Florpk (?) thing.

I've come up with my entry, Kommandant Deutschland, the alter ego of Captain America Starting on the design now, should be a fun model to do.

Dared1111: I'd suggest adding a bit of red highlights in the hair, give her some black eyeshadow, lighter almost white skin and tear the cloths up a bit. Smaller lips and a few scars should do the trick.

I have a new version of my edit... I removed the thong... Ive still got to start modelling . I haven't been able to brighten the skin with her looking nice.

I do intend to specular and normal map my model, for all the nice effects. Wouldnt want her clothes to be dull now would we?

Yes sorry! I completely forgot about the various comic book heroes etc! Yes Comics, Books and Cartoons are acceptable.

Quote: "I'm going to enter i think. But do you HAVE to texture the characters ?
"

If you want to win the 3DMaster - Champion Award, the model will have to be textured. But you don't have to do a texture, you could still win the Best Model award!

Don't worry guys! There will be some inorganic competitions in the future!

Thanks for all who are showing their interest! Keep the ideas/screenshots coming!

31st of May? A day after my birthday, woot!

I think I will enter this one as I've neglected 3D for a little while. I won't get started until I've handed my work in...but for some ideas to get me started...

...Bolt-er-ego?

Okay...I really need to sit down and think, though I like the Glukkon Abe idea, I have recently re-played through the 2 abe games. Oddworld: A Slig's Exoddus. Perhaps.

Or a huggable, loveable paramite or scrab.

Kommandant Deutschland is a funny one, too, I'd definitely like to see that .

Here's what I've got so far, it's/his/her identity is still shrounded in secrecy, but you can have a cookie if you guess it correctly.

Thought I would try to improve my meager modeling skills once again, never completely finished an organic model before so this is going to be a nice experience, I hope.

I'm going to remake Daxter into a swordsman and hopefully it bears some resemblance to him so far.

I drew a quick little sketch of him and modeled the head, but I'm not sure what else to give him besides a sword, sheath, and maybe a shield.

There is no harm in more than one person doing the same character! After all, this is an open contest in terms of design, there could be many different varieties of Alter Ego.

Glad you are all taking some interest! And its nice to see some work already!

Good Job guys.

Am I the only one who instantly thinks about Greek mythology when I see this competition? I personally love that mythology and will certainly make something from that. I'm leaning towards a strange (Male) version of Medusa.

Just got to add the finishing touchs on the sketch.

Alucard, mythology is probably a good idea...hmm...Thor in drag? After all there was a story in the Eddas where Thor was in drag, in order to retrieve his hammer, you could say afterwards he kind of fancied himself in women's clothing.

Sounds like an absolutely splendid idea! And I'm sure you'll enjoy making it a lot as well heh. Remember to switch his hammer with a lollipop and you'll more or less guarantee a win.
