November 3D Compo..

"The scene must be seen!"

This time around we are asking you to make a 3D scene, it can be anything from a still life to a full blown outdoor battle, Indoors, outdoors, underground, off-world, microscopic.. anything goes.

No poly count limit and the deadline is November 26th

Have fun with this, we can't wait to see your scenes.

Cheers!

Special Note:
We are going to allow the entrants to use existing models they have lying around, they can be from past compo entries or just unused items in your practice folder. This might even be a good time to 'finish off' any models you have in progress and showcase them in an interesting scene.

Hi David, apologies if this question has been asked in previous competitions.
I understand that these contest concern themselves with modelling however as this contest is about the scene as a whole, could my submission include post 3D touch-ups i.e. colour corrections and enhancements in Photoshop ?

Now I am definitely going to enter this one. I didn't have time for the last one, but this one I will make time. Already started on it.

But I'm curious to see Wetham's question answered. Personally, I don't think it'd be fair to allow photoshopping in the rendered scene, mostly because not everyone has skill in photoshop and it would be unfair. I'd like to keep it solely 3d, which is what the comp is about.

I dont know i think a photoshop edit is fine, digital artists touch up scenes all the time, and just because not everyone has the abilities to do it doesnt mean they shouldnt be able to do a beauty shot.

Anywho

I hope i have the time to get in on this. I wont have alot of time since finals are coming up soon. (My college is on a 10 week term) but i might have some time near the end of the month for something. Which I'm sure I'll over estimate how much time I need to complete it like always. That said whatch out for the december compo.

If i did it once i can do it again (Do you see what i see Sept 09)

I'm not going to limit anyone's creativity. Use the tools you have at hand, be it a good ray tracing program, 3D moeling program with rendering, DbPro, Bryce, or if needed a few touch ups in an art program.

Personally I don't see how someone using photo shop, or paint shop or any other image editor for a little post production is going to hurt, the same could be said for those who have a dynamic lighting HDRI capable rendering engine. (Is that fair to the photo-shop guy?)

I use bryce all the time, it's my preferred 3D rendering package, and I also don't feel bad if I do any post production in my favorite paint program.

How about this,.. if anyone does do any 'Post-Production touch ups' they should show a before and after rendering so we can see what was done 'outside' the 3D world. Does this sound fair?

Cheers!

Hmm, I don't think touch-ups are a problem. Considering their are three awards for three different aspects of 3d, basing judgment on what an entry looks half way through production is not fair to the entrant.

Heck, Neo has touched up all of his entry's in a photo package and no one has said anything. I think this situation came about because Wehtam_ won the cover contest. Though I doubt anyone would admit it.

I'd say if you do your best and take the time to really work on your entry, you will have a chance to take home an award.

Just my opinion though.

Congrats to last months winners! And good luck to all those who enter this one!

And many thanks go to David for another fantastic banner!

Should be a good compo, can't wait to see what you all come up with.

Thanks, BiggAdd.

Just a small start on my scene, here. I plan on better mountains, a fishing boat in the center of the lake with a father and sun/boyfriend and girlfriend staring up at the glaring sun and beautiful sky, add some trees, plants, and other miscellaneous things. Other people will probably take on different kinds of scenes because the nature/spectacular view kind of setting is over-used, but I've always wanted to do this kind of scene.

Screeny... Never mind
----

So, good luck with the competition everybody. I expect this will be a tough one.

[edit] FPSC Models copied me word for word. I feel flattered.

Happy Cheesecake you cannot use the [ img ] tags with a php link, it must be an actual image, (.jpg prefred.) I suggest you upload it here and tell us "image attached!"

Cheers!

You can, but it requires the header of the php script to be changed to an image file, and we also need to have permission to access the file.

In Happy Cheesecake's case, we would need to login to his forum in order to see the image.

Might I suggest Photobucket.com for image uploads, its free, there are hardly any ads and you get lots of space.

contact support i had an issue with them that a ton of my model renders had been removed because someone flagged renders from certain angles as inapropriate so they had nixed all my images. I contacted them and had everything back in a day.

If i did it once i can do it again (Do you see what i see Sept 09)

You just have to know what buttons do what. Get the right materials, the right textures, the right skybox, and anything can look awesome.

But, new update. Smoothed out the hills, slightly adjusted the skybox and water texture, and added a tree on the lake. Still have so much to do, but I'm having problems with the importing...

Screenshot.

Nice scene Cheesecake, the shadow on the water look a little out of place though.

Thanks, nackidno! Yeah see, I thought that about the shadow, too, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get rid of it. I guess I could use suns instead of lamps and lower the energy, but there's gotta be a simpler way. Quite a conundrum, indeed.

New update though, will make sure to get rid of the shadows, later. Just gotta get all the essential objects in the scene first.

I just did a quick check through the shader panel. Try doing this and see what happens:

In the shader panel, select the water mesh and hit the "shaders" tab, here deselect the Shadow button, it should disable shadows cast on the object.

Thanks, Nackidno, you pointed me in the right direction. It worked, somewhat, but made the water really bright. I'll fix that. Cheers.

i think its fine, we do make games that can classify m rated shooters so... I think its in bounds up to the point of nudity (which is only because i recognise the number of people to young for that on this forum)

If i did it once i can do it again (Do you see what i see Sept 09)

Here is my entry. Made in Blender. ^^ Very simple but I think the execution is very good.

I might add that the text on the pages is NOT my textures. But the texture on the ring is.

Here's a start on mine, I still need to texture the terrain and flesh it out a bit with vegetation. I'm also going to add a dragon hunter battling the beast.

Here's some frontal detail on the hunter as his center body mass is mostly shadowed by the dragon when in scene:

And here is my final completed entry:
