You know im hitting this in breaks. Pun intended

I much prefer a good compettion like this, the 'novelty' themed ones are a little harder to come up with since were all wire'd on making everything shiney.

As it goes i think entrants will increase easily. Out of curiosity, why dont you advertise this in the fpsc models and media section? Quite alot of them dont know about these compettions or this board for that matter. We might get fresh blood ^__^

Do we get more brownie points if we do get it game-standard polycounts, texture it etc?

If you want your brownies cut into triangles to make 'Points' that's fine. anything that 'impresses' us gets brownie points.. nice models, great scene renderings to show off the models, low poly counts,.. game ready content.. all the yummy stuff.

Now I'm hungry for some Brownies...

Cheers!

How lucky am I?! I have brownies lying in the fridge!

I'll get some for you all.

On topic, I am not a modeler. Nevertheless, I think I'll try this out.

Oh boy, I can already tell this won't end well.

I'm definitely going to enter this one as well, but before I really get into things, i have to make sure of one thing:

making a gargoyle would be fine, right? since they are made out of stone. or is the theme more like brickwork kind of stuff?

Much apprec.

Ultimate_H you asked and answered your own question.."making a gargoyle would be fine, right? since they are made out of stone."

If it's made of stone, rock, cement, granite, or anything else a stone mason might use to build/carve/chisel/grind it's acceptable.

Don't over think the rules.

Cheers!

so was Dexon's stone arches post the inspiration for this one?

I like the material themes like this and the woodworkers and such

Will really try to get an entry in

Sorry to say, no it wasn't. This compo was prepared at the same time as the woodworker's one but we wanted to do a few other compos before we returned to the 'apprentice' theme compo.

I might have a bash at this. Thinking about making a Moai. Could do it with normal, ambient occlusion maps and show it off with a shader. Been meaning to try out xNormal for stuff like this for a while.

Anyway, just wanted to post this so when someone else makes a Moai, it doesn't look like i'm copying.

Really good modelMazz, but maybe try and change the texture and slightly reduce the specular because it looks more like metal than stone at the moment.

Keep it up

Plus, I'm busy, so if I never get around to it then don't be surprised.

I second Henry's opinion, don't give up Shadowtroid. Heck, make a pet rock, draw inspiration from all the other stone carvings,.. make a pile of stone ships.. what they left behind might just be the kind of 'outside the box' thinking we judges like,. errm but now that I mentioned it, it might seem like I'm playing favorites.. I can't enter these contests, not because I'm a judge, (well maybe that's most of it) the real reason is I always have a gazillion ideas for these contests. but nobody thinks like me so the entries always surprise me.

Anyways, don't give up. any entry is better than no entry.

Cheers!

I have a good idea, just not sure if I can manifest it. Oh well, I'll try. Hey, I do share the same first name as some of the best modeler's here.

@Mazz426 I'm curious how you got that effect: Is it just a solid color with a normal map, or is it both an actual, realistic stone texture with a normal map? PS Josh Mooney@ Darn it! the only thing that seemed simple enough for me to try was an easter island head , ah well, maybe I'll come up with something if I just go for a walk around the local park...

sjhooks@

its acctual a render in zbrush and its all down to the mtcap, i boosted the specular atribute added a small amount of noise, a marble texture and lowed the diffuse to get bolder shadows

and yeah josh, that looks great, i'd never thought of the easter island heads... thats a great idea

Shadowtroid:
Glad your entering. If you need help drop me an email as well. If you have msn, you can add me. I love to help people learn to model.

SJHooks:
If you look up the Moai statues you'll see that there are several variations and types of statues, not just the heads, which aren't actually heads, but buried full figured statues. I was planning on making the entire body statue not just the head anyway. If you want I'll pick something else to model.

Everyone:
Thanks for the comments.

This is a borrowed hour from my I.T. work since the uploading is taking the mick. Theres a surpirse for this aswell. Quick a nasty one ^_^.

Edit;

The Idiot forgot to post the image.

Finished mine...
First off High-poly sculpt...

Secondly Low-poly baked plus stats...

Good luck everyone.

Oh no no no, I'm just saying it's the only thing that I seemed to be able to think of that was simple. Even if I made mine, it wouldn't have looked that great, and besides, I'm still not sure if I'm entering. I was just planning on doing an easter island head. But, oh well, there's much more to make that's made of stone, such as, if I wanted to be as simple as possible, I'd just make a high detailed egyption pyramid model . And @Henry: Looks great! Curious how detailed the texture will be. It reminds me of the Dexon thing a few days back. @Head: Nice marble head statue. Just curious, but who or what's that based off of? And @laz, nice, again, just curious, but what's that based off of?

Oly moly. I've had nearly a whole bottle, and have to say I feel pretty good. Good to model too. Here is the progress on my Moai Statue. I think the base is pretty much done. Time to add some ugly marks and some chippers. Maybe some pieces missing, make it more un-mirrored looking.

Crits welcome. Decided to go HDRI render with this one. Haven't done a proper one since my telescope scene. Should be funner. Think I'll make it look like an actual photo taken on Easter Island. Some grass, rolling hills, that sort of awesome stuff.

Good luck everyone if I haven't said it already.
