Started to work on the statue texture...harder then expected. Trying for a realistic look, so far is alright in my book. Still needs more detail.

Three texture layers altogether atm, each with it's own diffuse/bump/alpha/spec map.

Crits welcome.

Ok, here's a start on mine although there is still a lot left to do. It's going to be a fountain, tomorrow I'll start work on the central statuary then move on to texturing the stonework components.

Erm... quick question.

I have skimmed this a bit but I wanted to know if you can use older work which dont have the raw mod data?

If I didnt have all the data for the pic could I still enter it? Just asking as I noticed some ppl posted there raw mesh too.

The short answer is no you cannot use old models that were made before the comp was started.

As far as I know the intent for these mini 3D compos is to have the entrants build their models during the competition, not search their personal archives to resurrect old models (unfinished or not).

Using an old model or scene as inspiration to make a new model is fine I'm sure.

I hope this clears things up.

Cheers!

oh right, i would just like to say in case anyone comments that my hand entry was started after this comp started and the above model isn't identical to the one in my other thread and was adapted purposfully for this

Here's some more progress. Most of the basin texturing is done and I've started the statuary. One more good push and I might finish it off.

Hi Neodelito. I used a base model and then built around it. I take it we were allowed to use stock in this compo?

If not, its np, as I can very quickly build it again from scratch. It wont make any diff to the final model or pic.

EDIT: thanks for your pic neo... I love who its reg to...so does that mean you pirate it from them? LOL

Double Edit: Yes ofc it is from "a site" ;_)

LOL... you will be waiting a long time then m8.
If you read I said "If not, its np, as I can very quickly build it again from scratch. It wont make any diff to the final model or pic."

Why should I change it just to suit you? No offence, but what would be the point? As far as I am aware this compo is about designing a scene /object and making it look like rock.
The creature I made, regardless if its used as its base a set of pre-rendered objects or not, was exactly the look I was after.

David said "As far as I know the intent for these mini 3D compos is to have the entrants build their models during the competition".
He did not say that it was against the rules to use pre-rendered objects to build a finished work. Besides, if I re-did it again, the outcome would be the same as I am not changing the model look for anyone...its what I envisioned.

Actually, forget it.
I am not gonna be blamed for mucking up this thread for people. I will withdraw my image and when the next compo comes up I will enter that one and do everything from scratch.

I guess no one got the Rolling stones logo that I did. OHhh well.

I was working on this one but I'm redoing it and going to use a different technique to make the stone.

Everyone's entries and WIPs look awesome so far! It's also nice to see so many people entering! Still got some time so I am still working on mine. Just a little slower progress now.

I didn't know if you were going for the Rolling stones or the fact that they rock!

My green thumb grew the tree my Trojan War horse was crafted from. With roses in our pockets we rally round the tombstones. Ashes to ashes, we all fall down.

Yeah I love ZBrush. But I haven't used it in months. I've been using Maya 2010 for school and been hating every second of it.

No worries Neo your texture work is amazing and yeah thats the logo.

Newest update: tweaked the normal maps and water saturation, some lighting, and finished the central piece.

It's about 90% finished I'd say, with just a small bit of background fleshing to do and perhaps a few minor shifts here and there.

I'm calling it 'The Font of Elements'

I chose a carved tree to represent air as wood is a workable/shape-able material and the trees play a vital role in both the climate and oxygen cycle. Without them we'd have nothing much to breathe. The only other workable material I could think of for it would be blown glass, but I felt that wood fit the scene better.

The earth, fire, and water elemental representatives in the scene are self explainatory I think.

Anyway, here's what I've got so far:

Agreed Quik, that's one of the main things bothering me still. also the crease in his elbow could use a few more loops so it's not so pinched.

I'm thinking about breaking up the limbs into attached pieces which would have been carved separately.

I noticed after posting it that the flagstone texture of the basin beneath the water got stretched after I shrank the central island so I'll be fixing that as well.

Thanks for the comments guys

i Ortu nice idea, for water you not need texture, render in "Index of refraction"

if you like download an example here..
http://www.anim8or.com/download/preview/class_transparent.an8

Reference: http://www.anim8or.com/download/preview/art_raytracer.html
(need anim8or preview version, from www.anim8or.com , is free)

the water material is using raytraced transparency with a weak refraction less than the actual index for water I think. Higher IOR with a clearer color is great for small volumes but a deeper, larger volume should have more color and murk. I'll try upping the IOR to that of true water (1.33)

In this scene the reflection outweighs refraction because of the angle of the light source and the viewing angle of the camera. I'm using a diffuse texture because I like the color tones it adds, which is realistically still too deep a blue for this amount of water, but it complements the sky visually.

You did an awesome job on the post effects work on yours Neo. This is shaping up to be a really good compo all around.

"In this scene the reflection outweighs refraction because of the angle of the light source and the viewing angle of the camera"..Ok, now i see.. i like your concept, thanks.
Other question, in my scenes i use lots (is a important part in all my models) png and transparent textures to simulate fire, smoke, and other special efx, (i don like use a particle engine) in your flames i see a transp. png in a plain object? if you add a emisive material and a light source for each lamp i think they be look mega great

Good compo all around.

yes they are transp .png and there is a light source at each of them which is why the front of the fountain isn't all shadowed from the sunset in the background. adding emmissive to them is a good idea, i'll look into it. should help them 'pop'

Ultimate_H: Cool model. I know everyone hates to hear this and often argue against it when people point it out... BUT your picture is dark for me. Enough that I had to tilt my* screen to take a look at your detail. Just throwing that out there.

*It might be bright for other people, so please don't flame me guys. Just pointing out that some people will have troubles, couldn't hurt to bring the exposure up a bit.
