Hi all,

As we near the end of September I'll have some free time to spend on site code. So what would you like to see added to this forum (on a feature basis). I'll take the most popular and add it - depending on what it is of course!

Cheers,

Rich

How about showing you your last 50 posts viewed, like on the old forums. That was really convienient.
Or a "users online" thing at the bottom like RGT had.

I think we should have something like RGT had, with the post count rating. We could have "You post as much as Raven!" lol Ravens sig could be "You know that Raven that you post as much as? Ya thats me " like DGs was

1 Star - Forum Newbie
2 Stars - I just like these forums....
3 Stars - Im here more then I should be
4 Stars - In theropy for Addiction to Apollo
5 Stars - Apollo Ranger
5 Red Stars - Moderator
5 Shiny Gold Sparkly Stars - THE Man (Or Admin, whichever you would prefer Rich )

Seriously, I think that would be a cool feature. It would go like this

Name

Both possible. Where would the "Last 50 posts viewed" actually go though? That'd be quite some list, the same height as the default thread index.

Users online is relatively painless to add although of limited actual use

Kudos - no, we've discussed this one before.

Star Rating - maybe, I was after more practical (i.e. useful) features to be honest.

Cheers,

Rich

Well, I guess you could set it to whatever you want, like 10 to 50.
And it wouldn't be too long, because all you would need is thread title, and date viewed. That way, you could keep track of threads you posted on the night before easier.

jpg screenshot uploading feature with java popup box...
might seem a little moot i guess, but it would really be helpful to have like a 500kb upload limit but be able to upload only jpg/gif (as they're small formats) into the forum and then they appear at the bottom of the post as thumbnails.

perhaps also adding the ability for us to use mete's Milkshape3D OCX model veiwer as a link command like
[ms3d ]http://somewhere.com/mymodel.msz[/ms3d ]

perhaps the same for linkable streaming video's have a little vid symbol all of these would open up in a java popup / new window so that you have to click on them and then it only affects that person personally.

maybe a favourite links that you can put like 10 of your favourite sites to be displayed in your profile, would be good

another nice feature for some would be the ability to turn off signatures, although you can turn off your own - you can't turn off other peoples which sometimes are ridiculously large (man who misses that Dark Pikachu one? hehee)

maybe up the avatar size from 50x50 to a slightly bigger 80x80

How about a search that checks all forums, or at least multiple forums, using checkboxes?

1.
A Better search, like Mattman says, other than just the titles in your current topic. I would like to search body text as well in ALL topics. This may be too much of an overhead for your server though

2.
Its late at night and I reply to someones thread but forget which one the following day! How about a list of last 50 you have posted in (not started).

3.
With all these clever programs around harvesting email addresses from websites and sending out spam, could you disguise peoples email addresses using javascript (very easy)

1. The ability for users to delete posts that they start.

2. A better search (one which searches text as well as thread titles)

3. The star rating is quite a good idea.

4. Lite forums option (replaces all graphics with text, removes JavaScript and removes the top bar).

I'd like to be able to flag posts of interest (just some sort of highlighting or marker to make it easier to see).

From a Mod point of view, I'd like to be able to see deleted posts and to move posts between forums again

Get rid of team requests and divide into:

game ideas:Where people post their storylines and if he likes them a programmers makes them into a game
code requests:When a coder is stuck he can find help here. This is better than trying to make a whole team just to advance your current project status. You now need to do things yourself, but can still come here when stuck.
model showcase:people post their models for others to benefit from.If they like they can use the models for their games. No models for sale are allowed.

Ok, my comments so far:

I've put little *'s next to those that I will definitely do, the rest are either "need more persuading" or "nope".

1) Showing the last 50 (or whatever) posts you viewed. This can be done, but my question was WHERE would they be placed? Bottom of the index page, as a link on the drop-down menu, etc? There isn't room to fit them anywhere on the current pages really.

2) Showing all posts you have contributed to. Erk. Nope.

3) Ability to turn off signatures. No need - you can turn off any image that appears in anyones signature already, which means at the very most all you'll ever see is 3 lines of small blue text. So I consider this one done. I personally always browse the forum with signature images disabled.

* 4) Milkshape OCX viewer. Yeah why not, easily done.

5) JPEG/GIF upload. Perhaps, not overly enthusiastic about the idea, but it needs doing for the DBDN merge anyway so I'll think about it.

6) "a favourite links that you can put like 10 of your favourite sites to be displayed in your profile" - put them in your biography

7) "up the avatar size from 50x50 to a slightly bigger 80x80" - 50x50 is bad enough as it is

8) D-Mail is planned yes, but this isn't a forum feature - it'll work across the whole site. It will still happen.

9) Star-rating, ok I may conceed to this one eventually. But it's of no practical use, so it hits the bottom of the pile I'm afraid.

* 10) Better search. Yes, agreed. This will be the number 1 feature to enhance.

11) Javascript email munging. If you don't want your email address displayed, don't make it public?

* 12) Delete posts that you start. Well, it's easy enough to do. Will have to add the ability for an admin to stop a thread from being deleted and/or resurrect one though.

13) Lite forums option (replaces all graphics with text, removes JavaScript and removes the top bar). There virtually are no graphics. If you hide the avatars in your profile and use the "simple" post form box then you get the "lite" version already. As for removing the top bar, nope. But I may create a tailored version that shrinks down the height of it considerably. Understand this is highly likely to be a dbdn only feature.

* 14) Mark Threads. Yeah I want this feature too, so I'll implement it.

* 15) See Deleted Threads (mods). I can do it easily by changing one SQL parameter, but I'd like a way to collect them together so they don't distract from the layout of the forum. Perhaps I'll just allow mods to go "off duty" which either hides or enables all this stuff.

* 16) "Move Threads" (mods) - yeah, will add that. Agreed.

* 17) Emailed when someone replies. I agree, very useful. Will add it.

* 18) Mark bug thread as confirmed from within the viewing of it - easy, will do this.

19) "Limited size on signiture images" - very hard to enforce i'm afraid. The only way it could be done is to have a fixed size for all sig images, otherwise it's impossible to check the size of the image before it's displayed as they're all hosted off-site. I could allow uploading of avatars / sig images - that's the only way possible to control the size of them. Which might not be such a bad idea actually as it would speed up page loading not having to wait for various avatars to be pulled in. For now, just disable signature images.

20) Remove "Team Requests". I'm very very tempted! But it's such an amusing board I think that "code requests" will become part of the CodeBase actually and "model showcase" ought to go into the 3D area anyway.

Cheers,

Rich

I think that's why it's amusing. The only reasonable part of that board (IMHO) is the top post. I think that I've actually only ever deleted 2 posts from it ... which I find quite amazing

@Rich, I think I agree with all those, except why bother reducing the size of the page header? It doesn't get in the way too much and there are better things to spend the time on. I'd put this one to the bottom of the pile too

Umm.. I guess it would be a seperate page with a link. You could make it another section at the top, like profile, codebase, and history. The history page could tell you how many posts you made, show the last 50 topics viewed and/or posted to, and the threads started, which has already been done.

I'm thinking you could add the past 50 threads in the profile page.

A kudos system might be possible if it's possitive only, like no negitive kudos. I really don't care on way of the other, just an idea that flew through my head.

I slightly expanded public profle page would be nice, it seemed the old forum had a much large one than now.

Rich,

How about a reply button on each post in thread that automatically quotes the incoming email. That should take you about five minutes to add in, but it would save everyone a ton of time.

Something is up with the SQL server. The hosts are on the case. It's nothing to do with the users list. Also you only appear on it if you have read something.

Rich this is what you must if you have not done it:find a way to prevent someone from making 1000 hotmails(probably he saves their info like address, pswrd and the like)and subscribing them all to the newsletter,so that he will most probably be the one to get DBPro for free...I know it's far-fetched but it still wouldn't hurt to have a prevention right?

Could check what IP was used when they signed up with the form. Duplicate IP's would obviously mean someone's got more then one email for the newsletter. This wouldn't help with people who have dynamic IP's though and of course it's simple as hell to just use a different proxy everytime you sign up.

Oh yeah, I don't think TGC actually control the signup form anyway so this might not be possible at all.

Make it that when you log in, there's an option to take you back to the last thread you were visiting before you had to log in, or the last forum or something. It's better then having to go to your stupid account which you (or at least I) never use.

Feature Request

This should be pretty simple.

Just have it so you have a button that will take you to the bottom of the thread you're reading, and one to take you too the top.

Really not a major request, and I've lived without it for all this time, but it maybe just something nice too have.
