I'm not really sure what you're asking but you can...

-Have three text lines that play in sequence each time the player enters the zone.

-Make the 3rd text repeat each time the player enters the zone.

-Edit the script to freeze the player for a period of time when the script displays.

I hope that helps.

I hate bump this, but:
I have my FPS Creator installed in E, instead of C\Program Files\The Game Creators\FPS Creator and I get an error when I try to save anywhere else than C:\Program Files\...\FPS Creator. And I saved my scripts in the default folder and thought that I could manually move them from there, to the folder I have my FPS Creator and my scriptbank in (E), but when I do that, the scripts seem to have disappeared... they just aren't there. But when I go back to TextEase program and save a new script there, I can see that the scripts are there in the folder... but I can't see them outside the program... any suggestions?

Sorry that you're having an issue. I need more info:

1. What operating system and version are you using? 32bit?, 64bit?
2. Is your installation to 'E\Program Files\The Game Creators\FPS Creator' or somewhere else?
3. Are you using an Administrative account or logged in/running the program as Administrator?

Do me a favor. Save a script to the default directory with a specific name. Then do a search of your computer for that specific file name and tell me where it went to. (if you can find it)

Thanks.

1. 32bit
2. It's E\FPS Creator
3. Yes, I am.

I did. And it found the script. It say that the file is a shortcut icon and it's in a folder that doesn't even exists... C:\Users\owner\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows and I tried to go there, but it doesn't exist...(Users and Owner were in finnish so I don't know if I translated it right).
Now I noticed that there appeared a "script.tmp" file in the desktop...

and I have vista if that helps anything...

Thanks for your time

Metal Devil123,

The program was tested by some Vista users and they reported no problems. The file, "script.tmp" should be created in either the scripts directory or the program directory. Did you install TextEase to the desktop? If you installed it to other than the default directory, you might install it to the default and see if that helps.

I have no idea why files would be created in your roaming profile or why it would show up as a shortcut icon. You may have some file association issues. It sounds like a Vista thing and I don't use Vista.

Sorry.

Ok, I will try to figure this out, thanks for your time anyway

EDIT*
Whooo! I found a way! I just copy the script when it shows it in the saving screen, paste it into FPI EditPad and then save it! Thanks for your help and thanks for TextEase, this will really be useful!

Negativesal,

Your text script works properly for me. I'm not seeing your level layout so I don't know how you've got it set up or how the player enters and exits the trigger zones. One thing I notice is that you have a value of 300 units for when the current text no longer shows and advances to the next line or next text.

So -
1. When you are in the zone the text shows
2. When you exit the zone the text disappears, but it is still active until you move away 300 units.
3. If you step back into the zone without moving 300 units away, you will see the same text as last time.

Like I said, I don't know what you're trying to accomplish with that. You are just using one zone with this script, right?

Negativesal,

Again, the way you made the script, the text should not change until you back away from the zone 300 units. That's the way you made it. If you want it to change when you step out of the zone, remove the distance. That's really only for entity triggers, not zones.

I don't really like the fact that setup is trying to edit my Windows DLLs and telling me that its recommended that the file is not edited. Could you just package the program without a setup in a ZIP instead?

The program is written in VB6 which is quite a few years old. Naturally if your system is newer it will have newer dated files than the ones in the installer. You should tell the installer to keep your newer files and not replace them.. It's just a courtesy. It's not "trying" to replace your files. It's asking if you want to. Just say no.

I'm in the process of upgrading to VB2010 so any programs from now on will have the newest files.... for a while.

As for repackaging the program................ no.

This looks like a very good program. I may try it out some time if the need arises, but I am going to work on voice dialogue for now. However, this would work well for subtitles, come to think of it. Maybe I will try it then.

I've used Textease. It seems very handy.

I'm having a few problems with characters not saying all their lines when I execute the program though. Most work well, but a few just seem to miss their lines and I have no real explanation for it.

Sounds like real life but if you'll give me more info I'll look into it.

What version of FPSC?.
Which characters are showing the issue?
Does it happen with zone or entity or both?
Do you have multiple characters using raw text scripts?

Whatever else you think may be helpful.

I'm using 1.17.

I've looked into it more myself.

The first entity triggers a sound zone before you reach the character entity (Girty's stock jgsally). So, its soundzone trigger, then textease entity script. It does not seem to execute the first textease line, but it will execute the next line. My guess is FPSC has a conflict and won't execute both scripts.

I'm also using a lightening bolt studios character and the lines get muddled. My current theory is that the distance of 60 is within the distance between the second floor and the first floor. However, if that was the case, then I would expect the line to appear while I was on the second floor on screen anyway. One possible complicating factor, pedestrian 4 is near the aforementioned sound zone trigger (maybe under it)?

The next entity executes perfectly. It's a remix of Girty's peacekeeper and seems to do fine. The TGC character also works well.

I had two more remeshes/retextures of Girty's character on the level. One worked perfectly and one did not execute at all. I have two theories. One is that the entities need separate names. The other was that the problem entity was behind a door. You had to open the door and the entity was right there (just telling people that the room was not acceessible to the player). It was an entity script but it did not seem to work. My only guess is if the entity has the same name, it might not work or that the door script somehow muddled the execution. ??? I ultimately decided to simply lock the room. Was not that critical and got rid of the character.

I also applied an entity script to a terminal entity. It worked fairly well. The second line got muddled. It was a static entity that I made dynamic. I may replace that one with a trigger zone and see if it works better.

The final character so far seems a bit mixed. The character entity is triggered. When I built a version to test the level, it only said the last line, but when I test level it seemed fine.

Anyway, that's a lot of textease implementation on one level imho.

From my perspective text ease works fairly well and I appreciate the program. I'm looking at the problems more from an implementation/conflicts perspective. It may be that FPSC doesn't always play nice and you just have to choose which script is more important.

This app is very helpful.

One quick question: is there a way to extend the on screen time of the text? I find with a trigger zone induced text, it flashes too fast.

Thanks John.

Quote: "I find with a trigger zone induced text, it flashes too fast. "

I'm not looking at it at the moment, but it seems like the "zone" script should show the text while in the zone and the "entity" text should show the text when within the distance you specify. If not, let me know. Post the script and your FPSC info and ver.

Here's what happens.

Player moves forward at beginning of level toward character entity.

I have the speech tied to a triggerzone rather than the entity, because I destroy the entity with another trigger zone (leaving a shadow apparently?)

Anyway, on to the textease. I create this trigger zone which is before the second trigger zone, but the text only seems to flash almost subliminally. I know what it says, so its not a big deal for me. It would be hard for anyone else.

If it doesn't work, I can maybe add another character, but I like to keep things light as possible.

Try changing "plrdistfurther=100" in the "NO REPEAT" section to "plrwithinzone=0".

You should not have a distance with a zone, only in or out.

As far as missing lines. You have to realize how fast the engine is looping. There may be a tremendous amount of work it's doing but it is still going amazingly fast. Sometimes you have to use a timer (etimer would be best) to slow things down. I haven't really read what the issue is but it seems to me you need to create a short time lag between lines. Sometime even just a fraction of a second such as 150 ms will do it. At times I've had to use 250 ms. You can tweak it if it seems a bit "jerky."

Thank you. Changing the line did work. I created both a png and a textease version and both behave almost the same (textease is slightly more centered).

I think what happened is that if you create multiple scripts, it gets confused. I noticed the within 60 box did not uncheck when I went to create an entity script first and then a zone script. You may want to look at that.

Glad it worked. You're right, the distance should clear between scripts. I'll write that down for the next update/fix.
