How did you get it to show MB instead of Mpbs?
Also the ping is really high

The adverts are pretty clever, they say 'up to' but that doesn't mean you'll get it. I can't get it because my village can't receive anywhere near as much as that. We're on Sky too, but we might switch to see if anywhere else can provide a better service with anybody else. We were on BT before and sadly we can't get Virgin in our area. It's annoying because we pay the same as everybody else so they could try and make the service here better, I mean we don't actually live all that far from town so 'distance' would hardly cut it as a reason.

I'm surprised. I thought the UK had badass internet connections compared to Australia. I live in Tasmania and I'm getting faster than some of you UK guys and I'm on the wireless with 3 other computers using the net at the moment.

In the UK theres tons of DSL supply companies but seemingly only one cable supplier (Virgin). Virgin do give there promised speeds but as Sappuka says, not available everywhere. All DSL suppliers use the term "upto" but unless you live next door to an exchange you will not get anywhere near the speed. Virgin (cable) does give you the speed promised and we've had the 50Mb connection in our house whilst our son was paying for it. But switched to Sky because it was so much cheaper when he moved out.

High download speed in my opinion is for those that are speed freaks or do mass downloading, or run their own servers. I'm with the patient few that just browses and can wait for that .pdf file to download. 3.5Mb/s is more than ample for me and our daughter doesn't have any problems whatsoever watching her TV online and youtube videos.

I've also heard that the UK was famous for it's internet, but it's not because of it's speed, it's more for the amount of people that have 'access' to it. I've even sat in McDonalds before today playing on my facebook games which is fun to do while all the other little kids are bored with their happy meal watching you play online games and watching youtube. And sat in Wetherspoons having a pint online.

We pay the extra for our TV channels that we watch so our broadband is only £7.50 a month with Sky and it's not capped. Probably the cheapest in the UK is Talk Talk, at similar speeds to any other DSL supplier, at £6.50, but then you have to pay the phone line rental. I was tempted at one point to go back to FreeView and just get Talk Talk in. We only really watch the Horror Channel and that's free anyway.

Maybe one day when we win the lottery then I might go back to Virgin as at least then you do get a static IP which can be useful for some things, unsure as to what. And I believe Virgin also go upto 100Mb now too, but I think that's for business use.

It is a good information about internet speed.........
Like the same way , i check my internet speed everyday..........both downloading & uploading speed through this site
My speed test results are,
upload speed:0.52 kbps
download speed:1.96 kbps
It has the best & accurate results for my internet speed test!!!!

I live like 0.5 miles away from the exchange xD (Lucky me )

Not sure its been rolled out yet, but I find it stupid that they give you these download speeds, but then keep the upload speeds low. It seems everywhere else, you get high down/up speeds, but in the UK you only get high download rates.

BT supplied our cable, we can't get Virgin here. I would like faster internet so I can get a consistent download rate watching videos and being able to use OnLive would be pretty cool too, when I get 2mbps I am able to use it, but at such a low quality it isn't worth it.

We had Virgin when I was a student and we rented our own place, the speeds on that we awesome and the download speeds at Uni itself, beyond awesome.

Upload limited to 500 kbit/s to stop others torrent uploads killing downloads.

Plenty fast enough even with 4 people using it, no limits and split 4 ways the cost is a few pounds a month.

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

I'm on a 10MB virgin media connection.

I should also say, that I started at 50, it was too fast, downgraded to 30, it was still too fast. Now I'm happy at 10.

My previous speed tests came back before at (yes I did write them down, and yes I know that's a little OCD):

50.7 down and 4.94 up
29.8 down and 3.54 up

So I'm pretty happy with them!

Says my upstream is now 19601 kbps and downstream is 1146 kbps, but speedtest still says 15Mbit, still fast though, probably because I live really close to the exchange.

Wow Seppuka, I'd get onto Sky and let them know your results over a period of a fortnight. They are able to speed that up dramatically because at one time I was with Talk Talk for about 6 months with speeds like that and the engineer re-routed the local exchange. It went from about your speeds up to about 3Mb/s. These days they can't give you rubbish like it's the contention ratio.

They'll send an engineer out to check for noise on your line and do everything they can at your end and when it's impossible to solve the problem then they will re-route it. I found that bit quite interesting when the engineer was explaining it all. Instead of just coming into the house from about half a mile away, the tinterweb was going round in circles for about 5 miles. Most likely the first thing they will do is to ask you to check your filters by connecting them just one at a time into the main junction in your home.

Usually sky are good with things like that, we've just recently got 9 months of free broadband and phone line rental off them, and that's because we couldn't pay the bill and was about to drop everything and go onto Freeview. He he... (You could always complain about it halfway through and try and get something for free off them...)

I'm not the bill payer (still living with parents), so I'll pass this on. I know I've got MUCH better speeds than that. My best speeds seem to be at 11pm onwards, I can get over 2mbps on my late night browsing or playing multiplayer games. If I remember I'll do a speed test at midnight and see how it compares, but FFXI recorded about 2.3mbps on download data last night.

For some reason the internet is a lot worse during certain periods in the day, not necessarily a distinction between night and day, that SpeedTest was recorded this morning and I just got this:


It's not because anybody else is using the interwebs in my house, that SpeedTest was recorded when I was the only person online...in fact, right this minute my sister is browsing the web on her MacBook and I'm getting better speeds.

105.79mbps down and 9.78mbps up. That speedtest.net doesnt work with mine for some reason. All the servers in Ireland seem crap. Most websites cap your download to either 1mbps or 2mbps. Even Steam has a cap. Which is annoying

ALL of that takes internet... now just imagine 4 people doing that at the same time...

OnLive too, my internet sucks for OnLive, I can only get it when I can stretch to over 2mbps and at that speed it looks awful.

Streaming movies/TV shows may be another - I mean at full 1080p resolution. I can get a good enough download speed to enjoy streaming if I'm lucky, but not fast enough to take advantage of my HDTV.

And of course multiple users.

Cable internet uses a shared pipe with other cable users in your neighborhood. DSL doesn't have the same limitation.

Neither really require the kind of high speed connections available today (40mb+). For games it's more important that the quality is good, and the latency relatively low. Streaming music doesn't require a whole lot of bandwidth.
