For some reason, I just can't stand it when I can't come back to the forum to see what interesting\hilarious topics that may come up next. Or if anyone has any new work or commented on my work. Anyone else do this? I hope I'm not the only one.
Oh and also, I've noticed the 3D Chat forum is quite dead here lately.... It was very active for awhile, now it's pretty rare anyone posts anything.

Look on the bright side at least it's not drugs, alcohol or playing MMORPGs.

TGC has been my #1 source for procrastination for years. If I didn't procrastinate, progress would never be made.

Good to know I'm joined by some of the greater members of TGC!
It's aggravating when you come to a thread, expecting a reply, then there's nothing, or something that's completely irrelevant to your post lol

I tend to separate the tasks, I'm not very good at multi-tasking.

It's 3:50am, this is not good. Okay, other things have kept me up this late, but regardless of that fact, I blame TGC because...well just because.

This 'addiction' is known as the TGC Effect. Basically, it occurs when you join a specific awesome online community, and cannot keep yourself from checking whats new as frequent as possible.

I suffer severely. I even read old posts from years ago, just to satisfy my crazed desires.

Here is my view/opinion:

People who feel the need to come back to the TGC forums are most likely people who have NO other forums or any other readable content book marked and thus they always find their way back to the TGC forums out of boredom.

So basically, is TGC the only forum you use? For me, it basically is the only forum I use at the moment.

I use one other forum on a regular basis. I think forums like this are not only useful for getting support and feedback on projects and content but also a great place to cool down. The other forum I visit is a discussion/debate board and that too has a decent social side to it.

Yup, that's me. It's not like I don't want to join other communities. But there's something about this one that makes others look really bad. I find myself posting and I'm thinking "Well TGC's forum can do this, why can't this?" Then I decide, someone probably knows it here. Then I come back and search it. So dibs to TGC for that.

I don't like when they don't censor cursing. I hate seeing a good forum littered with the F word being thrown around like it's not even a bad word. Although, others could think differently.

The fact that were all posting in this shows that we're addicts

This is the only forum I go into because it's got a wide range of topics to choose from and not just some (i.e, when you go to the off-topic sections of specific forums, the other 90% of the forum is dedicated to the topic like a game or something)

When I was really into FPSC and creating media, I used these forums a lot, just check how many threads I created. Then I look back and realise how much of an idiot and annoyance I was to people, but I'm putting that down to my sarcastic side and tendency to get annoyed/trolled by people and in turn end up looking like a troll myself. Main reason why I stopped posting as much as I did.

^That
Back when I first joined, I was a complete nub. I expected all game making to be drag and drop crap that anyone could do. I also wanted to impress my friends. I was very immature, my grammar sucked, and I was just a plain annoyance. Thank God I'm a bit more mature now and actually contribute something to the community (I think. lol). Going back and looking at some of my old posts and how I used to demand so much out of the community, I really want to punch my old self in the face. lol.
Although my addiction was worse then than it was now.

Honestly I could say that I was "addicted" to these forums for the first 2-3 years or so. Then my PC broke, I started frequenting many different forums etc. and somehow I didn't spend as much time as before.

However, I still have a Geek Culture tab in my browser that I never close (and maybe I should close some, considering I rarely have less than 40-50 open at once... ), still like "here" very much. :3

I only come here for the pony thread. I always check to see if the thread might have that nice blueish tint.

...

Is that good or bad?

(I used to do stuff in DBP until a year ago, never finished anything I started... but this year I actually only came back to TGC because of the MLP:FiM thread )

Yeah, I was addicted quite a while back. Then I decided I'd not make video games, so I got off. Recently I've had some good ideas that could be turned into games, however. So, I'm back on here, and may get addicted again.

Vental is some person who makes himself look stupid....mostly. Well, this is due to the weirdness he shares, which leads to cyber bullying. P.S. Beware the chocolate ice cream!

I agree! I feel the height of game development on this forum was at the time where zzz was making SoulHunter, Dream was being developed by Bizar Guy, and Mike Inel was making those awesome mini games. Today I feel everyone on the WIP forum is just developing their own game for themselves and the occasional "looks good" comment being posted... There's no more constructive feedback and I think not many people download the game to try it anymore. Is this accurate?

@ all

I think we should set a goal right here right now. Once a week you must download one game from the WIP and/or Program Announcement forum, try it, and post your honest feedback about it. If everyone started doing that, we could steer those boards back to what they once were.

Agreed. Now, it's either a huge project that someone doesn't have the skill to finish, or a huge project that someone has the skill to finish, but it's gonna be months. Most of the time they disappear off the map before the game can get finished. It's a shame, really.

This is my favorite forum, mainly because of the community. I mostly come for the posting competition now-a-days, and I've never really put anything worthwhile back into the community because I don't have much to offer in terms of game development. If it comes to anything geeky or something concerning games in general, it seems like I'm decades behind every other frequent poster and my comments would just get overshadowed so I usually just refrain posting, haha.

Anyways, it's in my routine to visit the forum daily, and every once in a while I'll peek at the WIP or 3d Chat board to see what's happenin'. Geek Culture is my favorite board, which I think goes without saying. I've never once ventured into the FPSC sections...

But yeah, this is my favorite community of people I've ever happened upon in my life. I creep around a few other forums, but this is the one that I always keep coming back to. Disregarding how much I actually post or how much input I give, I think I feel apart of the TGC family. This place has a way of doing that to you.

Basically, I wuv you all?

Quote: "I feel the height of game development on this forum was at the time where zzz was making SoulHunter, Dream was being developed by Bizar Guy, and Mike Inel was making those awesome mini games."

Yes, I was just thinking about this the other day, and you're definitely right. Specifically, Mike Inel's work keeps showing its face around the web. Just today I ran into a "popular YouTube let's player" doing a run through of Which. Getting about 400,000 views on a forum dweller's game is pretty astounding, I think, and I sort of feel important knowing that something as spectacular as Mike Inel used to post on the same forum as I, haha. Not to discredit zzz or Bizard Guy, though, because their work is spectacular as well. I haven't really gotten to express how in awe I am on a daily basis just from a quick scan of the forum threads, heh. The_rami, as a prime example, is also a gem that has originated from the forums who's making a living doing what he loves (I suppose, anyway ) .

And as much as these select people impress me and many others, there are still names that have gone unmentioned who possess just as much skill and potential. Unusual talents and amazing minds are very populous around these parts, and I feel lucky just to be apart of it.

I haven't been here for a while (prolly 6 weeks or so) but it feels like a lot has changed (and I only joined about a year ago ha, ha). I have a theory that this forum, like many others, moves in cycles. People get caught up in projects (I was working with a friend on something and doing two of my own projects), people get caught up in life and the need to check for new posts declines the longer one stays away. Eventually it becomes almost peripheral. Kinda what happened with me. Then I posted a (strange) project I'd completed last night and suddenly I'm checking for interesting threads again
I've seen this pattern with some of the regulars while I was posting on an almost daily basis myself (I also used to feel sad when I saw no unread posts). They'd be posting regularly, then suddenly there'd be no contact for a while, then suddenly they'd be back as if they were never gone.

Me too! I wouldn't be the artist I am today without these forums! Nor would I have the IQ that I have today. I am currently considered one of the brightest people in my school. I don't think I could've gotten that far without this wonderful community.

Very true! I know having an actual life prevented me from completing some of my projects too

What is this forum you speak of Sepp? I like to ...debate on the internet.

Am I colour blind or does the pale blue begin to look the same as the grey after a while? That's my main complaint of this forum. "Deeper Blue! Deeper Blue! Give the people what we're due!"

This is the only forum I visit regularly. It's the only forum I've seen where the mods are actually part of the community, most places they don't even read the threads and only act on complaints.

I'm in favour of censorship, I will explain why later, but I despise automatic text-parsing censors: most of the time you write something entirely harmless yet it comes out littered with asterisks, or is outright rejected just because you happened to end one word with the letters "ck" and begin the next with "fu" and that's an anagram of a naughty word! When did we start censoring anagrams? This sort of censorship turns an otherwise innocent conversation into a jumbled mess of cryptic symbols hiding manufactured sexual innuendos, like some sort of tedious Carry On Da Vinci Code, which requires you to first understand the misplaced kinky metaphors to decipher the intended message.

I do approve of human censorship however, because I like swear words, and I don't like to see people use them flippantly as punctuation. If you're going to swear you better be making a damn good point or saying something hilarious, otherwise you're just being lazy or failing to be intimidating.

The forum's name & even some of the content on the website may offend some people here, so I've dropped the URL in an email.

I like this forum. I primarily come here when I am having trouble with my projects. I have never failed to either find clarification or great advice from old posts or current members.
I wasn't here for the 'golden era', but there are current members of this community who's ingenuity, logic and just plain skill blow me away.(no names, I'm not handing out big heads here )

I don't share a lot of what I'm doing because most of it is small processes I'm designing to be used with big goals. By themselves they are not that impressive(well they are to me, but I doubt others care that my grass and shrubs sway), each one is a step along the way but I don't want to bombard the forum with mundane examples.

I'm still working on completing a game, not easy alone, but I want to get at least one complete game under my belt by myself so I can justify a team request. maybe this is what others are doing too. which could be why there seems to be less going on.

Without this community id still be stuck at this stage

so...

I started some time back with C++ but put it on hiatus (Just like when I started ASM a couple of lifetimes back, lol). I've been bad at self-study ever since leaving High School . Once I'm settled and my emigration saga (it really is a saga) is sorted, I'm actually gonna enroll myself in some proper classes (yes, that was a deliberate programming joke) and pick up where I left off.

Going off-topic (to a tangent that was off-topic in a thread on the off-topic board), back to the thing about the lack of "Interest" or at least lack community involvement in the development areas:
Quote: "There's no more constructive feedback and I think not many people download the game to try it anymore. Is this accurate?"

As The Comet so subtly put it.
So I did a little experiment: I took a screen cap from the Programs board a few days ago. I then calculated the percentages of posts vs views per thread. It was alarming that so few people were getting involved!

... And I began to feel a little bad as I, too, am guilty of only skimming stuff.

So here's my pledge card:

I nonZero hereby pledge to visit and comment on something in the WIP or Program Announcements board at least once per week.
Failing to do so, I hereby agree to accept the following punishment (make an X to select your punishment):

[X]Eat an entire boiled cabbage
[ ]Go a week without coffee
[ ]Go a week without watching/reading anime/cartoons/comics/manga.
[ ]Go a week without playing games.
[ ]Listen to to an entire Justin Bieber CD in one sitting.

/pledgecard

... So here goes nothing.

PS: I've uploaded the image too because the one I embed in my post may not stand the test of time.

nooooooo you should have chosen a week without coffee... I tried the cabbage one and it did not end well...

fortunately I survived... but the test subject...

BOT
I often comment in the WIP threads and also give constructive cricism too and praise as all of these help intensely as I know all too well the importance of congratulating effort [for the record I never had a father in my life and my mother did a pee poor job of it ~ thus I personally have a mixed response to praise...]

After going on a rampage across town in which I attacked three coffee shops, four people drinking coffee-to-go (incl. an old lady with a poodle) and a child with a coffee-flavoured ice-cream, police were able to subdue me with elephant tranquilizers.

I was subsequently sent to rehab where I was able to sneak caffeine pills on the side.

Finally I returned home and immediately got back on the coffee. I have since written a best-seller entitled "Caffeine & I: The True Story of a Coffee Fiend" along with a RAP album about growing up surrounded by caffeine in the 'hood.

I used to be like that with Monster, going off it wasn't easy as I'd have a need to drink it, but I made it my new year's resolution to break the caffiene addiction...and I've not had one since December 2011. [/Monsterholics Anonymous] Though...I'm going to Germany for a music festival in August, chances are I'll be fueled by Monster & alcohol for the full 3 days.

Yeah, also had an energy drink addiction too. They didn't sell Monster in RSA back in those days (Dunno abt the rest of the world). They sold Redbull, Play and another I don't recall. I used to chug Play like anything till I was told by a doctor I'd kill myself. I do miss that taste. *Sigh*
