Quote: "abuse of power"

I've always thought, even before becoming a moderator here, that the mods here are pretty lenient. From a personal standpoint I don't see locking a thread I've previously posted in as an abuse of power. Sometimes topics that skirt the AUP, or possibly even break the AUP, are allowed to be discussed in the hopes that a mature discussion can take place. Once that stops happening it's time to lock the thread before insults are thrown and animosity created.

I can understand that on occasion it might be frustrating to have the thread locked with the moderator having the last word. I don't think that's an abuse of power.

Now if I banned/slapped someone because we had a different opinion on a topic, I would say that was an abuse of power. Also I know if I, and other mods, have a public or private heated debate with another forum member I won't moderate them. Once those personal feelings come into it it can be easy to take out your frustrations by abusing the power. I'll make a thread in the mods lounge and link to the thread and leave it to the other mods to make a decision. Not always will the other mods think that any action needs taking.

I'd also like to note that I don't remember moderating anyone in a long time. More often than not a post saying take it easy is enough to calm things down. There are also other non-moderators who quite often step in and calm things down before things get too heated. Seppuku jumps instantly to mind here, he has a way of defusing situations.

I had a very public problem with Crispex. He eventually left the forums and I was told his reason for leaving was that I kept moderating him unfairly. Never once did I slap or ban him, the moderator audit log can attest to this. It was always other moderators but in his mind because I had a problem with him it was me bullying him.

I've been a member on numerous forums and I think this is one of the friendliest communities on the net. Yes people have different opinions, but in most cases it's quickly forgotten.

I thought I was posting about something which may have been useful for the mods to consider sometimes.

But as one mod predicted at the start, this thread has given some people an excuse to insult each other.

For what it's worth on the current debate, TGC create great products for people taking their first step into game creation, used to full potential you can also create some really good games, people have done it, many times. There is a market for this, as they have proved.

I hate it when people pre-empt a lock or call for a mod to lock a thread, but in this case, since I started the thread, I have no problem or hard feelings of any kind if a mod wants to lock this thread, I'm a little embarrassed at how it has turned out

This. DBPro is great for beginners and quick prototyping of ideas.
Anyone who comes on here to bash TGC products like we are all fools are themselves fools.

People who do it reek of amateurism and I know for a fact old_School you are a novice developer, I've seen enough of your work to know that. So where do you get off insulting the game creators products? If you don't like them, then fair enough, but you've been banned for this in the past, so why bother?

I wouldn't go onto the eclipse forums and tell them I'm not a fan of their IDE because I prefer alternative tools such as NetBeans.
Whats the point? And for that matter, what are you even doing here if that's all you are going to do?

You fail to realise that you are on a forum full of very talented artists and developers (not just in TGC products), yet you seem to strut around here with the demeanour of a master developer. We can all see through it and it is very tiring.

Imagine it like a young child talking about politics. Sure the child might come up with some buzz words that he's overheard/read, but what they say lacks substance. And if the child takes himself far too seriously, the joke soon wears off and it starts to get very tiring.
The child is somehow convinced he is an expert in politics, and any form of criticism or counter argument just gets completely ignored with more buzz words and waffle.

So I ask you please, just cut it out. I'm tired of talking to the kid about politics. If you weren't so snotty and it weren't so apparent you looked down on all of us, you might actually fit in well around here, and gain a lot from the community.

Also it appears you have been slapped, but I wasn't the one to dish out the punishment. Just thought you should know before you wave the 'abuse of powers' flag again.

(I am not employed by TGC and I do not speak on behalf of TGC. I've personally not used one of their products for a couple of years now, so I am in no way biased towards their products).

I must be visiting a different forum to some here, because I have never, ever seen any of the mods abuse their power!

By-and-large, I think the mods here do an excellent job, considering the fact they have jobs outside of the forums, and can't dedicate all their time to it.

Personally I'd agree with the comment that the problems on these forums aren't caused by the mods, but by certain members.

I think its best at this point A) I just ignore you Big Ad. B) Your a very special little man and well I'll just let you be who ever you want to be on the internet.

Anyway, I wish I could say I agree Thraxas but not always the case sadly. Overall I enjoy these forums at times. Its not the best place to ask for techincal help I preffer the MSDN but it is ok for a different perspective.

You need to spend a lot of time going over basic concepts such as arrays and for loops from what I can see of your code.

Here's a better place for you to start, rather than MSDN, I think that's still a bit too advanced for you ATM.

*Brandishes his anti-old_school stick*

I don't get why people bash the mods so often. I've never had a bad experience with a mod and don't think I ever will. Some people just don't know how to take things.

Thread Locked

This thread has been locked for the following reason: Mod wanted the last word in this topic

AUP Section 3.17 ...Moderators shall, at their discretion, determine what constitutes a violation of these terms, along with generally accepted netiquette standards, and can take action against those who violate these rules.

If you contributed to the reason for locking, you may now find yourself on moderation, or in extreme cases a ban.

In my defense that user was creating a lot of single-sentence threads at the period of time. Hmmm kind of reminds me of a user here...

You can't simply grab a thread and read it out-of-context and then make a judgement call against a mod or user. That was probably the harshest thing I've said to a user (calling the thread stupid), but I was already fed up with him for some time.
