I feel bad.

bitJericho and I exchanged the files at one point. They're still lying around on my HDD, but I still didn't get the chance to get the server running.

Is anyone else willing to set up a 24/7 server?

I wouldn't know what to do but I'm happy to be a mod if someone needs it. I'd like to have a go at a closed borders map (mod for it here), it would be interesting to see what happens. I remember a thread about a game that did that and the map got totally decimated until the factions were warring over a single block of grass.

The closed border maps are awesome... I played on one a long time ago and it worked good in the beginning. Saldy the admin started adding faction plugins and protection and stuff and I kindof lost interest

@angusm3 and anyone else who ends up hosting the server, If you're going to post the IP on the forums I would recommend adding a whitelist. Every non-protected server that has been posted on these forums has been griefed just because there are so many people that can see the IP.

If a server is started, I'll go on. I've always been interested in building mega-projects in minecraft. One of my current ideas is an arena / casino. I've been studying the layout of real buildings to get ideas. If anyone likes this style of gameplay, feel free to join me once there is a server

I'm heading back up to Landan tonight, will see if I can knock something togther quickly. I'll whitelist the IPs on here initially, and then see about getting the scripts working that bitJericho and I wrote for the last one.

I've really not played too much Minecraft, but wouldn't factions require perhaps a few more players than we have?

Anyways, first step is to get something up and running with whitelisting etc. then we can decide whether to stick with vanilla or install some mods. My VPS probably doesn't have enough oomph to run two instances with mods side-by-side, so I'm afraid we can't have everything!

I was on by myself for a bit, got a diamond mine set up in the desert village near spawn.

What are we going to do on this server then?...

* Everyone team up to build epic structures
* Split into two competing factions
* Install mods to make things more interesting
* Role-play

Minecraft can get boring pretty quickly if we don't make a proper game of it.

I vote for 2 competing factions and limited space available, since were all at least somewhat technically minded here i doubt having some mods that require both server-side and client-side installs are a problem.

I found some sort of weird temple or burial ground in the desert behind a huge dome-shaped mound of sand (you will not mistake it if you come anywhere near it.) I found there is treasure under it (the temple not the mound) but... I didn't know it was booby-trapped! I died but luckily managed to find it again and retrieve my stuff. That was pretty cool, I didn't know such things existed.

Here's an idea I just had. I don't see that a 2-player factions map would be playable with the community size we have - most times there would only be one or two people on the server which makes it oh-so-easy to have a whale of a time destroying the enemy base while they're all gone.

What I'm thinking is leave a vanilla survival server running 24/7 where everyone can build gradually build something cool up over time, but say once a week (or whatever time is best for people) run a limited-size factions server for a couple of hours and take off from last time.

Any thoughts?

That does sound like a cool idea! We'd just need atleast a couple of people, I dunno how many are whitelisted (and more importantly are interested in playing) now but whenever I connect to the server I'm the only one there... might be because of timezone difference or maybe not much happening on the server atm.

But I'd be interested in testing the limited-size & limited-timeframe factions server thingy. It should be online atleast 24h a week or more though (or maybe only on weekends or something) so that people have a realistic chance of playing... and like that it'd be impossible for one person to be online the whole time the server is up (well it is possible ) while someone else can't because they didn't have any time when it was up or something...

Anyways, walked around a little on the normal survival server today. I visited the desert village and found the mine someone started. Left the village on that side and was looking for wood to gather, found two ravines in the grassy biome which I plan to explore...
Oh and there's a small NPC village there which generated three houses: In one all the NPC live and can't leave because the door is two blocks above ground - they do have a fenced off backyard though; the other two houses are completely empty and also 2 blocks too high.
I might actually use one of the houses for now and also use the NPC's crop field, they don't need it anyways. xD
Someone else could be my neighbour and use the other empty house! ^.^

I gotta say, at the moment I want to explore and play, but I dunno how long my motivation will last... I used to play on a bigger server for a while but a huge area around the spawn was already explored and built on, so I didn't really know what to do... walking around in this unexplored world is somehow more interesting. But doing that alone is just like singleplayer ._.

I would be interested in doing a faction-type thing. I'm sure there could be a solution for the issue of not having multiple people online at once. We could set something up where factions can only invade the other faction's base when a certain amount of people are online.

I'd also be interested in a huge construction project, if anyone wants to join me.

I very much like the Idea of any sort of multi-player mine-craft experience. The problem for me is work. I have a severely random 24 hour 6 day a week timetable. every time I think I have a rhythm it changes. Share your factions and rules on this thread, and in the odd times that I appear in the world, I will choose my side and abide by the rules, that is if someone is willing to have a blow-in member on their faction. I signed up for this on a quiet period, we are picking up again now, like I said, my online regularity is about to become very random.

I want to be a part of this, I am just going to be a random and sporadic part of it.

I like the idea of factions but it encourages people to build ugly/underground bases; and combat is terrible.

I like Wilderbeast's idea of factions but having an armistice so that we can build nice things then have scheduled battles when everyone is on at the same time. We could weave diplomacy and territory disputes into it too. So we'd have a bit of role-play, nice builds AND factions.

I think we'd need some rules for combat, like banning picks during battle (to prevent mining through fortifications) and no building 1x1 towers.

It would be cool if we have scheduled battles, but BACKED UP the map before hand and restore the map as it was AFTER the battle. Then we would have the motivation to really screw up people's buildings and nothing would be lost.

And that's why you take server backups! Oh wait.. balls... I didn't :S Yeah sorry about that, it was probably lost when the server died.

Ok, Factions mod is installed. AFAIK it is working, but not being on my desktop until Monday I'm relying on you guys to test it. Not sure whether I should install the borders plugin too? Regardless - two faction names are needed!

I'll be upping the RAM and taking automatic backups, so hopefully we won't be losing anything.

tl;dr Don't build anything big, factions mod is being installed and server will be reset next weekend.

Do you have a log of how long everyone has been logged on for? I'd say divide people up based on that so we have roughly equal factions
. The two players who are on the most often can be the faction leaders and pick a name. Leaders can always be changed by vote or treason.

Do we need the faction mod? It could restrict a lot of things. I don't know the ins and outs of it though so maybe it has its benefits.

Feel free to say if I'm over-thinking this but I've had some ideas that might be fun.

* Instead of weekends explicitly being battles this should also be a chance for diplomacy, voting, espionage, feasts and tournaments. We could even have special conditions for different phases, here's a few ideas:
** During a feast no one but the town guard is allowed to carry iron/diamond swords or armour of any material, yet assassinations are permitted. (No more than 1 guard + 1 for every 4 citizens.)
** During a diplomatic meeting there is to be no violence under any circumstances.
** Deaths during building phase have no consequence.
** Deaths during the non-building phases have a consequence: if a leader dies they become a peasant with no power or wealth and the faction must choose a new leader (best agreed beforehand). [Battles have special rules which I'll go into later.]

* Winning battles earns more land to build on.
* Battles can be fought on open ground, or siege, as the best of three rounds of combat. A round ends once all players on one side have been killed.
* The winning side in a battle captures the opponent's leader: The captors can demand a ransom for his release. If the faction of the captive King, now under temporary rule, cannot (or choose not to) pay the ransom they will suffer a penalty in the next battle [I haven't decided the details yet.]
** If the captors choose to kill the captured leader, whether or not they demanded a ransom, he will return to his faction as a peasant, and they will require a new leader. However, there is a penalty for killing leaders [any ideas? Maybe the losers pick the site of the next battle?]
** While captured, a leader can either play as a peasant in their own faction or be imprisoned in the enemies base, and can freely switch between the roles. [Possibility for the leader to be rescued?]
* Both factions should have distinct colours. (Maybe a flag or coat of arms if you're artistic.) At least one item of armour worn by each player during battle must be their respective faction colour.
* Different classes are restricted to certain weapons and armour, eg archers can only wear leather chestplates and wield stone swords and bows. Knights cannot carry bows.

Another idea for factions... What if we split up the factions into four distinct groups? Those four factions could correspond to the four quadrants of the map. This would make it easy to assign ownership to land areas. The area closest to spawn and the lines between the quadrants would be no-man's land where most of the fighting happens. This could be an interesting concept because that would encourage groups to build border walls and defense systems, and trade between factions, things like that. We could make it simple and just name them fire, ice, land, and water. Or we could come up with other names. Just my input.

So, as Chris and Autobot already know, I can't seem to talk normally in the chat, I have to direct message everything. However, I don't know if it's a problem with the server, or just a general glitch, because I've encountered it on a couple of other servers too.

Also, I started building a small house, a little ways from the desert village. I hope that doesn't interfere with faction plans?

I'm pretty open as to what we do - though personally I think the current map we have is too large for PvP. I think we should keep the current map for weekdays, and either start a-fresh or download another map for the weekend PvP. Another reason is that there's already quite a few decent item caches lying around, which would make it unfair if one faction got them and the other didn't.

I like Obese's idea of chosing factions - though I have no idea what the play stats are. I could probably write a quick script to calculate them, but it's something like: Melancholic, RedFlames, AutobotAM who are the top players with most others a way behind.

Like I said though, I have no strong feelings either way. And as I have finals all next month I don't think I'll be on often enough to be in a position to make such decisions, so I propose a vote!
