I wouldn't put it past the US congress to pass anti violent game laws after something like this. Wouldn't be an issue if our government looked at real world statistics, but they don't tend to, it would seem.

Look at what Japan makes and look at how low the crime rate is there. The government should look at the terrorists motives. I believe their motives were to get attention or they felt threaten by the U.S. government.

It seems their motives were similar to the motives of most major terrorists (not trying to stereotype here, just stating the facts), and that motive is religion.

Quote: "That's part of why I try not to judge people even if they've done something as bad as this. Since I don't know any better I have to assume that it was their experiences that shaped them and not something that was inevitable from birth -- we certainly see a majority of terrorists and criminals coming from troubled backgrounds."

Osama Bin Laden had a wealthy, privileged and educated background, just like a lot of the top terrorists, maybe his father beat him too much as a kid so he had issues. I wouldn't know for sure.

You have to excuse me a little, having gotten old and grumpy, I no longer have the same ideals I had back then. You get more cynical as you get older. If you really want a label.....try psychopath.

As you get further down the terrorist food chain you find the psychopaths who are all too willing to murder a few people under the righteous banner of 'The Cause' whether it be political or even better religious. Either way its all good as you dont take responsibility for your actions.
I guess its just my opinion that psychopaths are just what they are, society doesn't form these people and you cant fix it with a hug.

I do understand where you are coming from with this and can plainly see where it is leading, but you wont change my opinion on this any more than I could yours.

But I stand by my assertion that no thinking person could go through with something like this and I don't believe its just environmental, you find many living in the same circumstances and pressures without becoming murderers and I have no intention of giving them a 'way out' by blaming society, theirs or ours.

Its a known fact for these terrorists today that it doesn't curry public favour and nor will it win their 'war', as governments point blank will not make deals with them. The whole point is to 'create' war, through insurrection, under the guise of taking the battle to the enemy. Algiers in the 1950's is probably the best example of terrorism actually having the desired effect, at least the effect the terrorists were after.

I don't trip over...I do random gravity checks.

I don't think it is purely environmental, but I think a great proportion of it might be. There must be people who had just as little chance of being moral citizens as you or I had of becoming suicide bombers. Still even if someone is born a psychopath I view it more like a deformity rather than something "evil"; and I agree that in many cases there is no "cure".

It's hard for me to explain without sounding like I'm contradicting myself. I could go on but maybe this is not the best place for it.

You'd say that someone may born with C4 belt.

Suicide bombers are ideologists. And obviously they are religious.

Nevermind.

All I can say is, wow. You Americans seem to have an awful lot of shootings and blowing-ups and stuff going on at the moment. Must be scary.

I'd like to know what's happening/has happened with those anti-gun laws Obama was thinking of bringing in (or has brought in, I don't know). I think it's a great idea, as long as they do it in a similar way to how we do it in Australia. Just banning guns full-stop would be a stupid way of doing it.

In Australia, to possess a firearm you have to own a firearm license, and to get one you have to pass a test.

Agreed. Just when I thought I had you figured out, I'm still not sure where your head is at. I know it's not the place, but it would be interesting to know your background... age, location, social standing, education... etc. But all that aside, what is the answer. We've heard a lot of opinion about the problem, but what is the answer? When this happens again, and it will, will we still be be talking about the cause... or the fix.

The answer is this forum is not suitable for such threads. We came here to ask or share geek experience.

We all agree that what happened was a tragedy, and that the remaining murderer needs to be brought to justice...as soon as possible. I'm sure all of our sympathies go out to the victims that are alive, and prayers/thoughts to those who are dead. We'll leave it at that, before this thread devolves.
