The Posting Competition sometimes has some interesting stuff in it, but it also is the home of pointless drivel. So this is a rival thread purely for interesting random things that don't fit in anywhere else and don't really deserve their own thread.

I found this video to start us off:

The Dog-Horse Conjecture
I would rather not see totally pointless comments made on this thread, that is what the posting competition is for. However, it is very difficult to judge how pointless a comment is, so you will have to determine that for yourselves. As a guide, consider this image:

If your post is more interesting than this image, post it here; if it is less interesting, post it in the posting competition.

That is very good! I had started a couple of threads that have not very important content to be standalone but I did not wanted to spoil it in spam competition™ either.

This is an interesting form of cooperation for programmers who happen to be physically near each other on a team.

http://www.wikihow.com/Pair-Program

Quote: "Pair programming is a method of programming in which two people work together at one keyboard. One person, "the driver", types at the keyboard. The other person, "the observer" (or "navigator") reviews each line of code as it is typed, checking for errors and thinking about the overall design."

That sounds like a disastrous idea to me. People can't communicate quickly enough to make it worthwhile. It also seems to imply that you need to stare at the keyboard in order to type. Checking your own code as you type is a fairly basic skill for a coder. I see the use in sharing ideas and helping each other but there are other ways of doing that that don't require one person to sit on their hands the whole time.

It sounds that way but some people work better in doing so (this is apparent from someone taking the time to document it, and even capture a picture of it -- even if posed). I don't think it's a "general population" sort of thing. It's worth experimenting with if you're on a team, just to see if it works out in practice or not. If it doesn't then you know it's bad. If it does work out then you're not left with your initial impression of it.

I'm not advocating the idea though, as might be implied by the post. I merely find it interesting.

That method seems to be what the majority of schools teach nowadays.

Well that would make sense if you can't afford to give every kid a computer. However, I don't see why schools buy hundreds of PCs instead of one big server and a tonne of lightweight terminals?

@Obese: I got some Brian Eno LP's I'm selling. Interested? (unless this would be against the AUP of course)

I think the Pair Programming method would be best for software architects who are designing the overall data flow and API of the program more than boilerplate coding. And we all know which type of coding is more prevalent.

We kind of do that in my Computer Science class. Our actual computers are connected to a network provided by some company, but we can't install stuff on it blah blah, so our teacher set up a server and we use Raspberry Pi's as thin clients.

We had that system in school for a while. It looks good on paper, but the system has a ton of latency and as a result, something as simple as typing in word becomes a total pain.

Now we only have actual computers that are connected to "some companys network servers", the problem is that we are totaly locked out of them and they are extremley expensive.

For a class, we needed to have a newer version of netbeans (upgrading a free program to a newer version) turns out that cost the school 30000 SEK (4500 $) to do on 30 computers. Same thing with installing a webbrowser permanently. If im not misstaken the school is also forced to rent all computer equipment from this company who can now charge as much as they want for something. To add to the frustration, the upgrade took about 3 months to complete.

The advantages are that we get file storage on the servers (100mb per student (go over 20mb and you get one email every 2 weeks telling you to clean it)) and what they call a "stable and bugfree system" which in reality is computers that take 10 minutes to boot and sometimes don't even work because the loginservers are offline.

Wow, that's scandalous! Private companies should have no place in education.

The sad thing is that the "municipal services" (is that the right word for the leaders of a city) have made a deal with this company that all the schools in the region need rent all the hardware from those guys. As far as I know, this has been the case since I started school 10 years ago and by the looks of it, nobody has even botherd to question it.

We always had a locally hosted server with full computers linked in. It sort of worked

My school has one computer lab set up where around one student in every ten will be sitting at the server to which the other nine stations are connected to. Sitting there is fun because you can shut off all ten computers simultaneously. That sort of makes a lot of people mad though...

Interesting Math(s) Problem:
How many Friday 9th's will there be in the year 2025, and in which months?
January 1st 2013 was a Tuesday.

Of course, you can swap the dates you're looking for to whatever you like.

Terrifying. In principle there seems to be nothing extraordinary in this photo, but if you go to the original source (link above), you’ll reach to the freakish original resolution of 70,000 x 30,000 pixels. Then you can enlarge… and you’ll be able to distinguish every single face in the crowd. Creepy huh?

Ok lets raise the bar back up on this thread so it doesn't get locked.

Neither of those are pornographic — youtube wouldn't allow them if they were. One was cultural history, the other was artistic. There was genitalia on display, but that doesn't make it porn any more than a nudist beach is an orgy.

Interested to see what the mods will say about it though.

Youtube askes the age, so it's safe. Anyway this is ART. Don't you say that you need to be 18+ to see this?

So a child seeing a grown man masturbate and women fondling their breasts out for all to see is fine, because it doesn't fall into certain subjects? I'm surprised a mod has yet to see the complaints and do some thing about it, but most of you think it's fine, so it must be...

I'm giving up because some people view this differently.

the fact that people on this forum think it's unsuitable for this forum makes it unsuitable for this forum.
