No... the 'f' isn't necessary, is it? It certainly hasn't been necessary in my experience.

Not strictly necessary, but it stops a warning message (unless you have that warning disabled) when the file is compiled.

Using which compiler? I'm using VC++2008 and AFAIK I don't get any warning without it

It shows up in VS 2010. You probably have the warning disabled by default (I think mine is on by choice).
